Agile is about keeping pace with change. Inclusion ensures we bring everyone along with us.
Agile initially brought a bunch of individuals cross-functional specialists together to work as a team. This cross-functional team was able to deliver complex products more quickly. The concept of diverse teammates looking at a problem and sharing their perspective from their skill background proved to be the ideal way of creating solutions that meet the needs of domestic customers.
As companies execute on their digital strategy, products are now global. Having cross-functional teams are no longer sufficient. Agile teams need to be cross-functional AND diverse to meet the needs of global customers.
Dave will discuss the importance and competitive need to make your teams diverse. They will also share their experiences of integrating diverse members into the team.

Teams get multiple perspectives.
Cross functional thinking allows you to think of ideas holistically across different functions.
No longer sufficient.
We need diverse backgrounds, diverse experiences, diverse talents to make good teams - super teams

Thoughts on Purposely Hire and pushing back to get good candidates
You need to have a diverse mindset
What are some of the most diverse groups you have been on?
What were they like?
Leaders need to make an inclusive environment
We need to keep what makes people different, if not its not diversity we just have different nationalities
We don’t want a melting pot we want what makes us different that is where the power is
Not being able to participate in offsite example
Awesome problem solver - I’m used to coming up with creative solutions to navigate life - like getting up in the morning, traveling to work, and navigating the city

Diversity Group Example
Having people that can do the work is most important
Group silos
The right person for the role is the goal
Have deep customer empathy - am able to really connect with customers as I can really empathize with customers to truly understand frustration and struggle - I have had to be able to read people whom I have to give complete trust in my personal care and well being…picked up a 6th sense to see what others don't
Government of Canada 2013 study
In the early 90s, a Harvard study demonstrated that organizations leveraging diversity are better able to adapt to changes in the external environment

The inclusive environment I need to be successful:
Helper for the washroom - dry pants should be a right, not a privilege
Door openers, special devices, lowered whiteboards…and Cassie - the rock star that helps my ideas become awesome stories and presentations so I can have a voice to others
