Department of Education
In school, children of different characteristics are gathered. Each one is inclined to a
specific capability or inclination. Teachers then are trying their best to fulfil their duties of
filling in the minds of these children. According to Howard Gardner (1983) that human beings
possess a range of capacities and potentials known as multiple intelligences, both individually
and in consort, can be put to many productive uses. Early in the morning, we bring our list
with us containing the things to be taught in the day. However there is one question that
needs answer from us teachers. Have I helped my pupils to have a proportion mind and
heart? I came across with a classmate in my post graduate class and the same time a college
professor who is teaching Guidance and Counselling in a university. She told me that teachers
nowadays fail to develop intelligent individuals with good morals, yet they have developed
intellectual monsters. That observation should not be taken for granted. It needs further
research, study and attention.
Intelligence Quotient is accepted as an important indicator of success, specifically
when it comes to academic achievement. Pupils with high IQ do well in school. However, it is
observed by Daniel Goleman (1996), a psychologist that High IQ has an impact on emotional
aspect of a child. He mentioned two striking points. First, the child will develop strong self-
esteem. Second, too much self- esteem ruins everything. Observable behaviors such as being
bossy, boastful, and even disrespectful acts to teachers and classmates are observed. Plato
said that, “All learning has an emotional base”. Thus, teachers should develop the mind and
the ability of pupils to express and control their selves, and so their ability to understand, and
respond to others emotion.
Never think that behavior is a hereditary thing. Psychologist said that emotional
intelligence can be learned and improved. If only teachers could inject necessary actions in
developing EQ, they could possibly lowered bullying rates, increased school attendance, and
reduced disciplinary problems. Remember that psychologist agreed that among the
ingredients for success, IQ counts only the maximum of 25% and the rest depends on
everything else including EQ (Bressert, 2007). You might make individuals who are intelligent
yet violators of the law in the future. So, here are some tips for you to avoid developing
intellectual monsters as described.
1. Teachers’ lesson should not focus only on the mind.
2. The three learning domains of your daily lesson must be stated.
3. The affective domain must be provided and evaluated using authentic assessment tools.
4. The value focus of the lesson must be appropriate to the subject matter.
5. Integration of the value focus to the main lesson should be present in the lesson’s
deliberation.

  • 1. By: Nyms M. Docdocil San Roque Elementary School Department of Education In school, children of different characteristics are gathered. Each one is inclined to a specific capability or inclination. Teachers then are trying their best to fulfil their duties of filling in the minds of these children. According to Howard Gardner (1983) that human beings possess a range of capacities and potentials known as multiple intelligences, both individually and in consort, can be put to many productive uses. Early in the morning, we bring our list with us containing the things to be taught in the day. However there is one question that needs answer from us teachers. Have I helped my pupils to have a proportion mind and heart? I came across with a classmate in my post graduate class and the same time a college professor who is teaching Guidance and Counselling in a university. She told me that teachers nowadays fail to develop intelligent individuals with good morals, yet they have developed intellectual monsters. That observation should not be taken for granted. It needs further research, study and attention. Intelligence Quotient is accepted as an important indicator of success, specifically when it comes to academic achievement. Pupils with high IQ do well in school. However, it is observed by Daniel Goleman (1996), a psychologist that High IQ has an impact on emotional aspect of a child. He mentioned two striking points. First, the child will develop strong self- esteem. Second, too much self- esteem ruins everything. Observable behaviors such as being bossy, boastful, and even disrespectful acts to teachers and classmates are observed. Plato said that, “All learning has an emotional base”. Thus, teachers should develop the mind and the ability of pupils to express and control their selves, and so their ability to understand, and respond to others emotion. Never think that behavior is a hereditary thing. Psychologist said that emotional intelligence can be learned and improved. If only teachers could inject necessary actions in developing EQ, they could possibly lowered bullying rates, increased school attendance, and reduced disciplinary problems. Remember that psychologist agreed that among the ingredients for success, IQ counts only the maximum of 25% and the rest depends on everything else including EQ (Bressert, 2007). You might make individuals who are intelligent yet violators of the law in the future. So, here are some tips for you to avoid developing intellectual monsters as described. 1. Teachers’ lesson should not focus only on the mind. 2. The three learning domains of your daily lesson must be stated.
  • 2. 3. The affective domain must be provided and evaluated using authentic assessment tools. 4. The value focus of the lesson must be appropriate to the subject matter. 5. Integration of the value focus to the main lesson should be present in the lesson’s deliberation.
