Given an outcome, we often exaggerate our ability to predict and therefore avoid the same fate. In cybersecurity, this misconception can lead to a false sense of corporate security, or worse, bury the true causes of incidents and lead to repeated data breaches or business-disrupting cyber incidents.
Will the Feds Preserve Electricity Market Competition?John Farrell
The 1978-era Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA) is under fire, but does a law passed in an era of shag carpeting just as out of fashion or still essential to preserving market competition?
OptAIoT - Enterprise Class IoT SolutionsNikhil Thosar
Industry 4.0 is disrupting the ‘digital transformation’ paradigm across businesses, especially in the way operations are managed. Data, as an asset, is being greatly leveraged to gain insights, make decisions, drive alignments, and get to that next level.
However, factors like heterogeneous systems, remote locations, data acquisition/management, actionable insights, etc. often create roadblocks. Technologies like Internet, IoT and AI/ML have evolved rapidly and are bridging the gap. With right adoption, one can truly look at realizing significant benefits.
OptAIoT can help you get started and reach there. From identifying transformational opportunities to architecting and implementing solutions custom created based on specific needs. Its proven IoT framework can be quickly customized to seamlessly fit in and start delivering rapidly. With experience in Manufacturing, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Facilities and Agriculture OptAIoT could be your Consulting and System Integration partner.
Internet of Things (IoT) Past, Present, and FutureLosant
A look at the state of the Internet of Things in the world today. This includes a brief history of how the term came to be and how we got to our present place.
Today, in the world of IoT there are a number of industries that are taking advantage of the technology. This includes manufacturing, logistics, retail, and more.
Finally, this includes a brief description of Losant, https://losant.com. Losant is an IoT developer platform for building connected solutions.
This was originally presented to The Circuit in Cincinnati on May 19, 2016.
In this lecture is the final session of an extensive wireless course delivered over several weeks at the University of Suffolk. So, by way of ‘rounding-off’ the series, we chart the progression of wireless/radio communication from the first spark transmitters through Carrier -Wave Morse, AM, FM, DSSC, SSB to digital systems along with the use of LW, MW, SW, VHF, UHF and Microwaves. Whilst we focus on Electro-Magnetic-Waves from 30kHz through 300GHz, we also mention optical, ultrasonic, and chemical communication as additional modes.
Our examinations detail the distinct genetic trails of 1, 2, 3G, and 4, 5G, the approximate development cycles/timeline along with distinctive changes in design thinking. We then postulate that 6 and 7G are likely to form a new line of development with 6G probably realised without any towers or any conventional cellular structure. In this context we also point out that there are no digital radios today, only traditional analogue designs with ‘strap-on-modems’ at the transmitter and receiver. Perhaps more radically, we suggest that it is time to adapt fully digital designs that allow for the eradication of the established bands and channels mode of operation.
We also chart the energy hungry progression of systems from 1 through 5G where tower installations are now consuming in excess of 10kW due to the extensive signal processing employed. This immediately debunks any notion of another step in the direction of more bandwidth, lower latency, greater coverage with >20x more towers (than 4G) and >250Bn power hungry smart devices. In short: we propose that 5G is the last of the line and the realisation of 6G demands new thinking and new modes that lead us away from W and mW to µW and nW wireless designs.
Whilst most of the technology required for 6G is available up to 300GHz, there remains one big channel in respect of the growing number of antennas per device and platform. Even for 3 - 5G + WiFi + BlueTooth space is at a premium in mobile devices and fractal antennas have not lived up to their promise too integrate all of these into one wideband structure. However, at 100GHz and above, antennas/dipoles become less than chip size and can see 10s included as phased arrays. But this all needs further work!
Throughout this lecture, we provide examples, demonstrations, and mind-experiments to support our assertions.

My Co-founder Gareth Glaser and I have spent the last few years advancing firearm safety through technology.
We’ve had a great seed investment of $1.5m which has produced a solid team, pre-production prototype and secured intellectual property.
We are embarking on a series A capital raise of $3.5M with a key milestone of delivering first run production within 11 months.
Our mission is to advance firearm security and save American lives by stopping child gun accidents, shootings by underage teens using family guns (at times in schools), suicides using someone else's gun and stolen guns used in crime. Members of law enforcement and the military serve on our Board and as Advisers and see important applications of our product in everyday policing, Defense and Homeland Security.
The team is uniquely positioned with my 15 plus years in the firearms industry running product development for Smith and Wesson (7yrs) and Remington (3.5yrs) and Gareth's 30 years of experience building business with a focus on finance and legal.
We have patented a mechanism that when locked prevents the firearm trigger from being pulled. Only an authorized user can lock and unlock the firearm. In addition, if the authorized person unlocks the firearm and it is pulled from their hands, it will automatically lock preventing the firearm from being used on them.
We are re-shaping the market. Our targeted consumer is 30 to 40 year olds with children at home. They don't currently own a gun or the gun is locked away and not available for protection. Our solution puts the safe into the gun. Our target market includes those who want protection (they are buying mace or a bat) plus the 5.4M defensive pistol market a target. The defensive pistol market is over 5M units sold per year and we are targeting early adopters looking for personal protection with a safer option which equates to 50K units or 1%.

E-invoicing data for functional territories definition: the use case of pharmacies
Maria AURINDO (National Institute of Statistics, Portugal)
The presentation illustrates how a new Business-to-Consumer (B2C) database extracted from the Portuguese E-invoice system can be an important tool to explore the functional territories concept taking the pharmacies catchment areas as an example. The discussion addresses data integration methodological options and how Statistics Portugal infrastructural information domains – Business register, Building and fraction register and Population register – were crucial for this exercise, developed within the CE-SIG – Map of facilities and services project.

Nano Dimension’s DragonFly LDM™ System is a one-stop solution for agile hardware development and innovative circuit design across a wide array of industries. It empowers companies to securely control entire development cycles through in-house additive manufacturing of PCBs and non-planar electronics with speed and precision, while reducing R&D costs. With it’s Lights-Out Digital Manufacturing (LDM) printing technology, this is the industry’s only comprehensive manufacturing printing platform for round-the-clock 3D printing of electronic circuitry.
The name WALD-stack stems from the four technologies it is composed of, i.e. a cloud-computing Warehouse like Snowflake or Google BigQuery, the open-source data integration engine Airbyte, the open-source full-stack BI platform Lightdash, and the open-source data transformation tool DBT.
Using a Formula 1 Grand Prix dataset, I will give an overview of how these four tools complement each other perfectly for analytics tasks in an ELT approach. You will learn the specific uses of each tool as well as their particular features. My talk is based on a full tutorial, which you can find under https://waldstack.org.

Summary
Moving from A-B is slowly being revolutionised through data. Car-sharing and ride-hailing are just the beginning. Thousands of connected devices are currently monitoring data points, and although stand-alone analysis can be useful, true innovation occurs when these data sets are combined to transform into something new.
In the near future, IoT data explosion and the API revolution will collide to change city planning, urban movement and the role of the car in the 21st century.
- First off, we set out to understand what big data means in the context of transportation, answering questions such as what is it, where is it coming from, and what can you do with it.
- Next, we'll zoom out and apply these learning to transport innovation in a wider context, considering how it will influence concepts such as urban movement, social mobility, and quality of life.
- Finally, we'll discuss the relationship between open data and innovation.
