Laptop computer history
Mierlut Jonathan-Istvan
1975
• The first portable computer was the IBM 5100
• It weighed 55 pounds (25 kilograms), even with this weight it was
much lighter than any other computer at that time.
• This computer is not like the laptops we imagine/see today when
we here the word “laptop”, but it made a path for the development
of truly portable computers.
1981
• The Osborne I was the first truly portable computer and is
recognised as the first laptop computer.
• It weighed 24½ pounds (11 kilograms) and had a 5’’ (12.70 cm)
display.
• This computer was developed by Adam Osborne, in April 1981
• In that year Epson released the first portable computer with a
built-in printer.
1983
• Radio Shack released the TRS-80 Model 100 portable computer in
the U.S.
• It had a LCD, this feature was really rare back then
• It was invented and firstly developed in Japan, but Radio Shack
bought it from Kyocera
1984
• Commodore SX-64 was the first laptop with full-color display
screen, it weighed 20 pounds (9 kg) and was sold for $995.
1986
• IBM released their first laptop, the PC Convertible
• It weighed 12 pounds (5.5 kg), making it the first laptop under
15 pounds (6.8 kg)
1989
• Apple released their first laptop, the Macintosh Portable in September
• Its price was $6500 at release, it was not a popular and well-selled laptop
• NEC released NEC UltraLite which was the first notebook style laptop
• Its weight was less than 5 pounds (2.27 kg)
1991
• After Apple did a huge mistake with the Macintosh Portable, they
re-worked their laptop concept and released the PowerBook line.
PowerBook 100 PowerBook G4
1992
• In 1992 Intel and Microsoft worked together and developed/released
APM (Advanced Power Management) specification for laptops.
• Olivetti developed and released the first laptops featuring a touchpad
1994
• IBM released the ThinkPad 775CD, the first laptop to feature an
integrated CD-ROM drive.
2002
• Toshiba released the Toshiba Portege 2000, the thinnest laptop to be developed at
only ¾ of an inch (1.9 cm) at the thickest part.
2003
• Toshiba released the Toshiba Portege M100, which is the first laptop to feature a
slim DVD-ROM drive.
2007
• ASUS released the Eee PC 701 in October 2007, which was the first netbook to be
available. It featured a 7" screen, an Intel Celeron-M processor, and a 4 GB SDHC storage
disk.
• As technology is developing they find new solutions for different
problems with laptops every year.
• Today laptops are extremely popular, maybe more popular then
desk PCs.
• While I was searching for the different informations I was pretty
surprised by the development process of the portable computer, I
hope you all liked and found my presentation as much as I did.
• Have a nice day:)
