Presented at Open Data Manchester's "Joy Diversion" event which followed the OpenStreetMap UK CIC AGM. This talk was an introduction, and some pointers to how people can edit and update the map. It was followed by groups exploring Manchester, before returning for hands on help with using iD editor.

However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. We will also review a history of some of the changes we have gone over the past two years to deal with late and unordered data, non-blocking writes, read-replicas, or faster batch ingestion.

- Thank you for Open Data Manchester for hosting us. I originally proposed a “train the trainers” workshop, so let’s start with what I always do… Hands up if… You know of OpenStreetMap? You have edited OpenStreetMap? You are an OSM UK member?
- What is OSM? (read out) So let’s long in detail at what that means
- “Free as-in beer” means you get to use it, subject ot limitations of the offer. Like other maps. “Free as in speech” not about how full the glass is, you get more. You get the beer recipie and the right to brew your own. In map terms, you get the data that made the map & we’ll see what you can do with that data.
- Another common description. Meaning it can be updated/improved by anyone. This means it is as up-to-date and as complete/detailed as I, you, anyone, makes it. Very good for Humanitarian use (a talk in itself).
- So let’s long at the map… This is as it was when it started.
- Switch to web browser. osm.org/ In workshops, I encourage people to look this themselves. Find your home, work place, etc. See what we have made. Use the map layers button on the right. Explain the freedom to create other styles Why, what for
- So many styles, even a website to show many of them in a random fashon.

- So how do we, and what. Verifiable on the ground – not subjective Surveying methods vary for amount of data or preferred style. If in doubt whether it can be mapped, record it. Discuss with experienced mappers how to add it when you get back to the computer.
