The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was established in 2011 with headquarters in Abu Dhabi, UAE and offices in Bonn, Germany and New York City. IRENA's mandate is to promote widespread adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy worldwide. Governance includes an Assembly that meets annually and a Council of 21 members that meets twice yearly to provide recommendations to the Assembly. The Secretariat, led by Director-General Francesco La Camera, implements programs, provides progress reports, and facilitates cooperation among IRENA's over 160 member countries.
