Various elements of a Grinding Wheel
5. Work piece is fed against the rotating abrasive wheel.
Due to action of rubbing or friction between the abrasive particles and work piece material is
removed.

7. On the basis of quality of grinding, it is classified as rough grinding and
precision grinding.
Rough Grinding
Precision Grinding
Rough Grinding:- It involves removal of stock without any reference
to the accuracy of results.
Precision Grinding:- Precision grinding removes negligible amount
of metal. It is used to produce finished parts and accurate
dimensions.

8. Grinding wheel is made up with two main elements:
Abrasive particles
Bonding material
Abrasive particles :
Properties of abrasive materials:
i. Penetration hardness.
ii.Resistance against elastic deformation.
iii.Resistance against fracture.
iv.Resistance to wear.
Abrasives are classified into two principal groups
Natural abrasive
Artificial abrasive
V.B.POLYTECHNIC, NAVSARI. (655) MECHANICAL ENGG. DEPARTMENT
9. Natural abrasive:- There are a few examples of natural abrasives which
include sand stone (solid quartz), emery, diamond etc.
Artificial abrasive:- Main artificial abrasive are silicon carbide (Sic),
aluminum oxide (Al2O3), Boron Nitride (BNO3), cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)and
diamond etc. Artificial abrasive are preferred in manufacturing of grinding
wheels because of their uniformity and purity.
Bonding material :
Function:
To hold the abrasive
Helps in self sharpening action
To provide mechanical strength to wheel

10. Types of bonding material
(a) Vitrified bond (V) Clay + abrasive + water
(b) Silicate bond (S) Abrasive + silicate + soda or water
(c) Oxychloride bond (O)
(d) Resinoid bond (B) Roughing, grooving,
(e) Shellac bond (E) cutting off, polishing
(f) Rubber bond (R)
