German Photographer Albrecht Tubke's Unique Portrait Style
1. My Photographer
I have chosen to base my study on the photographer Albrecht Tubke. Tubke is a
German born photographer who has studied at Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts and
the Guildhall University in London. Him himself isn’t a well-known photographer as
he does a lot of own work instead of jobs for other people/companies; his field is
mostly portrait and occasionally landscape and objects. Tubke tries to capture the
representation of somebody’s individuality and uniqueness; hence why he always
captures people of them expressing themselves however they like through facial
expression, clothes and body language. I am going to look in to detail about the life
and works of Albrecht Tubke; and will analyse some of my favourite photographs
from his website.
Tubke captures the daily citizens of a small German village to the fashionable people
of Florence with such consistent elegance and that is why he appealed to me. I want
to follow Tubke’s spontaneous street fashion theme he implemented in Florence and
to try and attempt my own version.
What really stood out to me was the way Tubke had taken his photographs whether
it is portraiture; still life or landscape is the consistent editing he applies to every
photo. He de-saturates his photographs to make them quite dull and matt but the
key colours still catch your eye, he adds a white border round every photograph
which hasn’t had any of the colour taken out of it so it makes the whole photograph
stand out anymore. I would like to attempt to do this to my digital images for UK
Tribes.
