INTERVALS IN
MUSIC
MUSIC - 5
• When Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts march, they keep the same distance
from each other. They take uniformly sized steps to maintain this
distance. It takes practice and discipline to march like them. They need
to follow a specific counting when marching and conduct their
movements accordingly. In music, there is also a specific way to count
the distances between notes. Find out in this lesson. When Boy Scouts

•In Western music, when notes are written on the staff
they create certain distances. The distance from one note
to another may differ according to the number of steps.
The distance between two notes or tones is called an
interval. The size or distance of an interval can be called as
prime, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and
eighth or octave. The smallest interval used in Western
music is the half step or half tone which means half a note
in pitch. Example of this is C to C# or D to Db. Learning
about intervals makes it easier to play scales and chords,
which you will learn about in unit 5.
