The document discusses advanced networking capabilities and applications for research and education both currently and in the future. Today, networks provide megabit bandwidth and IP services focused on campuses, while coordination across networks is loose. Tomorrow, gigabit bandwidth, IP and dynamic circuit services will have inter-domain middleware and high coordination across networks. Today's applications include videoconferencing and sharing small data sets, while remote instruments have limited access. Future applications will support uncompressed HD video, sharing terabyte data sets globally, and routine access to remote instruments. A variety of research applications are discussed that benefit from high-speed networks including distributed computing, telemedicine, astronomy, and tele-immersion.

Digital Biology is the computer programming of bioassays using digital microfluidic biochips based on electrowetting on dielectric technology. Digital Biology allows for wide scale automation of procedures in synthetic biology by improving efficiency between 1000 to 100000 fold compared to manual laboratory work, for the first time enabling wide scale rapid prototyping for the iterative creation of biological systems. To successfully decentralize the Digital Biology technology, we want to develop Bioflux Technology—a platform that will automate the synthetic biology flow with great medical and commercial potential. Bioflux Technology will be a combination of a software suite for biologists to plan experiments, a microfluidic device, electronics hardware to run the experiments and the required wetware (biological reagents) to perform a wide range of standardized bioassays used in synthetic biology.

Ruediger Trojok is a Diplom Biologist, that invented a novel contraceptive method based on genetically altered lactic acid bacteria. He worked as a freelance consultant for the office for Technology Assessment by the German Parliament on biohacking and synthetic biology. Since 2014 he works for the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology on the EU program Synenergene. He is currently establishing a citizen science biolab in Berlin, and is supporting open-source biotechnology projects related to public life, politics and the arts.

The XLcloud project strives to establish the demonstration of a High Performance Cloud Computing (HPCC) platform based on OpenStack that is designed to run a representative set of compute intensive workloads. Two Use Cases will be demonstrated during this presentation. First, the interventional radiology use case of the XLCloud project has the goal to show that the XLCLoud platform can be used to leverage an application requiring both interaction and high performance computing. This simulator, developed by CEA and Esprimed, allows medical staff to prepare or replay an intervention in a 3D interactive environment (manipulation of the radiological system, position of people and their protections) while having the benefit of precise estimation of the dose they are exposed to through a 3D monte carlo simulation optimized in order to provide results in interactive time. The second use case will be based on cloud gaming and 3D visualization. XLcloud is a three-year long collaborative project funded by the French FSN (Fonds national pour la Société Numérique) programme.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) has proliferated rapidly as a cost-effective solution for data aggregation and measurements under challenging environments. Sensors in WSNs are cheap, powerful, and consume limited energy. The energy consumption is considered to be the dominant concern because it has a direct and significant influence on the application’s lifetime. Recently, the availability of small and inexpensive components such as microphones has promoted the development of wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASNs). Examples of WASN applications are hearing aids, acoustic monitoring, and ambient intelligence. Monitoring animals, especially those that are becoming endangered, can assist with biology researchers’ preservation efforts. In this work, we first focus on exploring the existing methods used to monitor the animal by recognizing their sounds. Then we propose a new energy-efficient approach for identifying animal sounds based on the frequency features extracted from acoustic sensed data. This approach represents a suitable solution that can be implemented and used in various applications. However, the proposed system considers the balance between application efficiency and the sensor’s energy capabilities. The energy savings will be achieved through processing the recognition tasks in each sensor, and the recognition results will be sent to the base station.

Li-Fi is a new wireless technology which provides the connectivity within localized network environment. The main principle of this technology is we can transmit the data using light illumination by using light emitting diodes where radio frequency is media in Wi-Fi and LED bulb light intensity is faster than human eye can follow. One germen phycist-Prof Harald Haas an expert in optical wireless communications at the University of Edinburgh, he demonstrated how an LED bulb equipped with signal processing technology could stream a high-definition video to a computer. By using this technology a one-watt LED light bulb would be enough to provide net connectivity to four computers. He coined the term "light fidelity" or Li-Fi. He visualizes a future where data for laptops, Smartphone, and tablets is transmitted through the light in a room. This technology is still under research and further exploitation could lead to wide applications.

Smart phones, tablets, and the rise of the Internet of Things are driving an insatiable demand for wireless capacity. This demand requires networking and Internet infrastructures to evolve to meet the needs of current and future multimedia applications. Wireless HetNets will play an important role toward the goal of using a diverse spectrum to provide high quality-of-service, especially in indoor environments where most data are consumed. An additional tier in the wireless HetNets concept is envisioned using indoor gigabit small-cells to offer additional wireless capacity where it is needed the most. The use of light as a new mobile access medium is considered promising. In this article, we describe the general characteristics of WiFi and VLC (or LiFi) and demonstrate a practical framework for both technologies to coexist. We explore the existing research activity in this area and articulate current and future research challenges based on our experience in building a proof-of-concept prototype VLC HetNet.
This paper attempts to clarify the difference between visible light communication (VLC) and Light-Fidelity (LiFi). In particular, it will show how LiFi takes VLC further by using light emitting diodes (LEDs) to realise fully networked wireless systems. Synergies are harnessed as luminaries become LiFi attocells resulting in enhanced wireless capacity providing the necessary connectivity to realise the Internet-of-Things (IoT), and contributing to the key performance indicators for the 5th generation of cellular systems (5G) and beyond
Today’s majority of data technique uses Radio Spectrum. But the major drawback of data
technique using radio spectrum is that it is very congested and the demand for wireless data
double each year. Every one, it seems want to use wireless data but the capacity is drying up.
Light –Fidelity is the transmission of data through illumination .It comprises of sending data
through a Light Emitting Diode which varies in intensity faster than human eye can follow .It
uses the fact that light travels at a such a high speed which is faster than human eye to catch.
Therefore when we vary the intensity of light emitting source it become impossible for the
humans to catch that sensation. It leads to very high speed data transmission, which is for
superior to current technologies.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

13. Telemedicine During a surgery performed at Ohio State University, Abilene was used to conference with doctors from other parts of the country. An MRI machine can scan a patient in one location and send the data to a remote supercomputer for processing, and then deliver the resulting images to a doctor in a third location. 10

Radio Astronomy Electronic transmission of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (e-VLBI) data from the Haystack's Westford Observatory and NASA's Goddard Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory, which were streamed over Internet2's Abilene Network to the Haystack correlator at 512 Mbps. The live results were displayed in a 3D plot (correlation amplitude, differential Doppler, differential delay) in Pittsburgh as the data were correlated. 12
17. Tele-immersion Tele-immersion creates coordinated, partially simulated environments at geographically distributed sites so that users can collaborate as if they were in the same physical room. In the case of medical applications, such as tele-radiology and urgent diagnostics, the availability of such technologies in the places that are physically inaccessible to specialists could potentially save the lives. Off-shore ships and oil rigs are good examples of such environments. 14
