your audience means understanding them on a personal level. Take a

Who wants to increase your followers, grow your client base, get more referrals, and/or make more money using online strategies? You can with internet marketing!
Today we’ll be covering the basics of Internet Marketing. First we will define what internet marketing is. You’ll learn who uses Internet Marketing and why. We will talk about a 5 step plan to put your internet marketing campaign in motion. As well as some free and low cost tools and resources to help you maximize your internet marketing efforts.
Then we’ll answer any questions you have, at the end. Let’s get started!
Internet Marketing is a very broad term. If you ask anyone what it means, you’ll get many different answers.
But in simplest terms, it means using the internet to position your marketing message in front of potential buyers.
There are many ways to do that. The internet has changed the way we market over the years. Here’s some examples of how things have changed.
In the past, radio, tv, print advertising was the way to go. We used radio ads, tv commercials, newpaper, and magazines to get our marketing message across. And while these methods are still used today, technology has made digital marketing more accessible to those wanting to get their message in front of people.
Today, we use email, social media, search engines like Google, blogs, pictures, videos, and other electronic methods.
Everyone is using internet marketing these days.
From corporations to small businesses to non-profits like churches, charity organizations, to public figures like authors, politicians, actors, and musicians. The reason they use internet marketing is because they want to promote themselves or their business, their product, service or event.
You can use internet marketing anytime you start a new business, have a new product or service you’re offering in your existing business, you have an upcoming event, or if you are offering a discount on your product or service.
Evaluate your current standing. Thinking about what you are promoting; have you done any internet marketing campaigns before or are you just starting out? What do you need to succeed vs what you have now? Begin with the end in mind. What is your ultimate goal?
Determine who you are targeting. Who is your audience or target client? Craft message around this person.
Create a plan. Set S.M.A.R.T. goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time specific).
Be consistent. Save time by automating tasks and/or delegating tasks.
Review. Determine what’s working vs what’s not. Make necessary changes. Rinse, wash, repeat.
Step 1 is to evaluate your current standing. You want to know what’s going good for you, what you may need to work on, potential opportunities you can take advantage of, and what challenges you might face.
To help you should do a SWOT analysis. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This is an example of what a SWOT analysis might look like.
Step 2 is to determine your target audience. Knowing who your ideal customer is will help you know what to say and how to say it to resonate with your target audience.
Here are questions to ask yourself when determining your target audience.
Step 3 involves creating your internet marketing strategy. This could include:
Setting up a website to display your products or tell about your service;
Search engine optimization which is optimizing your website by adding relevant keywords throughout your web pages- not to be confused with Search engine optimization which is paying search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo to display ads in prime locations of the search results page in exchange for you paying them a fee each time someone clicks on your ad. On the flip side, if you have a website you can apply to be an ad publisher and allow search engines to display ads on your website in exchange for paying you a percentage of the fee the search engine receives from the company whose ads you displayed and received clicks from.
Online advertising which is purchasing ad space on another web site that has a lot of daily traffic and has the same target market as you do. These are usually in the form of banner ads.
Email marketing which is collecting email addresses from prospective clients so that you can send them valuable information about what you do and how you can help solve their problem.
Social media optimization which is using social media sites to share your blog posts, videos, and other content in order to increase your search engine traffic.
Blogging which is writing articles related to your product or service on your personal or business weblog.
Affiliate marketing is the process of partnering with another party so that they refer customers to you in exchange for you paying them a commission.
Step 4 is to remain consistent. Once you have your marketing strategy in place. It is very important to be consistent in your implementation.
As you see in the diagram, sales increase over time the more consistent the marketing was. If you are not consistently marketing your business your sales will be up and down and generally unpredictable.
Step 5 is reviewing your results. It’s a good idea to keep regular track of your metrics to see if you are on the right track to achieving your marketing goals, and determine what marketing methods are working and which are not. Every 90 days you should be able to tell which methods are working best for you. For the next 90 days do more of what worked and either reduce or discontinue what is not working as well.
So where can you promote? There are many, many choices. We’ll take a look at the more popular sites.
Currently these are the top 6 social media sites to promote your business or event.
Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
Depending your what you’re promoting, you might also try posting online classified ads.
These sites tend to get a bad rep at times, but online classified ads show up in the search engines and can bring attention to your promotion in that way.
Local directories are a great way to get noticed in your local area.
Adding your profile in local directories will allow potential clients in your local area to find you when conducting an online search for your product or service.
Most internet marketing is free and that’s what’s so great about it. However, there are internet marketing advertising methods that are paid.
Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, and Bing Ads are examples of the most popular paid advertising platforms.
The benefit to using these is that your ads can be seen in a matter of minutes as opposed to days, weeks, or months with the free strategies.
Ad costs can be affordable and you are in control of your ad costs with this method.
Blogging is a great internet marketing strategy. For those who don’t know, a blog is similar to a journal that’s online for the public to see.
This is good for you because you can blog about your product, service, or event. When you post a blog entry, the search engines pick this up, bringing more exposure for you.
Gone are the days when companies are spending tons of dollars sending out sales letters and brochures through the mail.
They are now using email!
So can you!
These are the top 3 email marketing services. I highly recommend MailChimp. You can sign up for a free account and start sending promotional emails.
One thing to remember about email marketing is, you must have the person’s permission to send them email or you can get into legal trouble, and labeled a spammer.
These three services can help you prevent that from happening.
Internet marketing can be very time-consuming! To help save time, you can automate your tasks or outsource them.
These are the three top automation tools: Hootsuite, Buffer, and TweetDeck. These tools allow you to schedule your social media and blog posts to post in the future.
For example, I go in once a week and schedule posts for the entire month and the software automatically posts for me on the day and time I scheduled it to post.
Hootsuite and Buffer works with all the popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and more. Hootsuite connects up to 100 social profiles, while Buffer only allows 12.
Another think to note is that TweetDeck only works for twitter.
Top three sites for outsourcing include Elance, Odesk, and Fiverr. You can get help with marketing, web design, writing, and more.
This not only frees up your time, but it also lets you establish consistency in your marketing.
Internet marketing can be confusing! So many things to learn and so many changes.
Here are a few tips to help you.
Here are some great resources for you to learn more about internet marketing and social media to promote your business or organization online.
