Introduction

The International House World Organisation

Founded in 1953, International House is a network of more than 140 schools around the world, all committed to the highest standards in
education and business.
A key aim of International House is to raise the standards of language teaching around the world. One important way in which we do this is
through Teacher Training courses for which International House has a world-wide reputation.

International House Belfast

Paul McMullan – Director International House Belfast
Helen Mitchell – Director of Studies International House Belfast
Marta Gonzalez – Co-ordinator of Modern Languages
Nathalie Verdoene – Office Manager International House Belfast

IH Belfast is a specialist language school set up by a group of language teaching professionals with over 30 years experience in the field.

Opened in April 2007, IH Belfast has already received thousands of students from all over the world. The British Council granted us
accreditation within our first year of opening with points of excellence for teaching, both in our Executive Immersion and General English
Courses. IH Belfast is a Cambridge Teacher Training and ESOL Exam Centre. We are also members of English UK and MEI RELSA.

International House Belfast is fast building a reputation for excellence in teacher training through our Cambridge CELTA courses. We are
involved in various Comenius Regio projects involving teacher training at home and abroad. We also prepare Queen’s University language
students for their teaching year abroad.
Preparation

Participants are asked to complete an application form that serves as an analysis of their previous experience, their level of English and their
needs in relation to CLIL teaching. They are also asked to identify an area of work (topic, scheme of work, use of target language etc.), that they
would like to develop and bring appropriate materials from home.

Objectives

This course is designed for teachers in secondary education, and is aimed at teachers with B1 – B2 level of English onwards.
.
The main objective of the course is to improve their own level of English, consider C.L.I.L. methodology, acquire expertise and fresh ideas for
teaching their subject in English and work with colleagues in their subject area to produce a piece of work (E.g. sequence of lessons, action
plan, project etc) that can be trialled in their classroom(s) on their return.

   • By the end of this course participants will have:
   • gained in confidence and fluency in their own use of English.
   •   developed awareness of the characteristics and needs of the CLIL learner in second language acquisition;
   •   refreshed their knowledge of different learning styles;
   •   experienced and tried out teaching activities that maximise pupil involvement and the use of English in CLIL lessons;
   • worked with Northern Irish colleagues in their subject area to produce a piece of work (E.g. sequence of lessons, action plan, project etc)
       that can be trialled in their classroom(s) on their return.

Teachers will have specific afternoon sessions depending on the subjects they teach.
The subjects this course caters for are:

   •   Science
   •   Music
   •   Art
   •   Physical Education
