2. Global Crisis - Air Quality
Worldwide, Air Pollution kills estimate 7 million people each year making it responsible for
one in every 10 deaths worldwide,
the fourth leading cause of premature deaths in the world.
South Africa contributes 1.1 percent to global emissions, with the energy sector contributing
close to 80% and transport sector contributing 10.8% of total emissions.
National Department of Transport, Green Transport Strategy highlights that road transport
accounts for 91.2% of direct emissions across the transport sector,
primarily from combustion of petrol and diesel.

3. Policy Framework in South Africa
• As a signatory to the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework for Climate
Change Convention adopted in December 2015, South Africa is committed to continue its
