A project related to power generation for West African Countries is chosen as part of the course work for WBGx MOOC Financing for Development – Unlocking Investment Opportunities. This project was chosen because among many potential energy projects, this one is at a relatively mature stage of preparation and it has the least financial gap. Hence has more potential to be realized. Sub Saharan Countries, especially West African Countries are power starved. By 2025, demand of powers in Guinea Bissau, The Gambia, Guinea and Senegal could rise above 4000 MW. For these countries, due to their fragile conditions, financing energy projects individually could be extremely challenging. In the energy sector, creating interconnection regional power grid could potentially reduce the generating cost by concentrating on providing interconnecting transmission lines. West African Power Pool (WAPP) mentioned in their 2015 report that in West Africa, only Senegal and Mali are interconnected. Therefore, interconnecting Guinea Bissau, The Gambia, Guinea and Senegal through a common energy project would help to improve the socio-economical development in West Africa.
