This document discusses leadership traits and the leadership process. It outlines six key leadership traits: vision, care, competence, results, action, and improving/learning. It then describes a seven step leadership process: vision, tactics, strategy, objectives, evaluation, implementation, and continuous improvement. The document emphasizes the importance of having a clear vision, developing a strategy and tactics to achieve objectives, implementing plans effectively, evaluating results, and learning to improve. The overall message is that strong leadership requires both key traits and following an effective process.
9. Care
• About the people
• About the mission
• About the results
• About the process
People don’t care how much you
know, they want to know how much
you care!
10. Competence
• Are you good at what you do?
• If yes, get better!
• If no, you are probably good enough, learn as
you go!
• Build relationships
• Build knowledge
• Gain experience
11. Results
As I lay here gazing at the night sky, dumbstruck by the awesome beauty
of the heavens, I can’t help but ask myself…..where did my tent go?
12. Results
• Leaders produce results
• Covey (7 Habits of Highly Effective People)
• “Begin With The End In Mind”
18. Vision
• If you don’t know where you are going any
road will take you there!
• A clearly articulated vision is the first step.
• Vision can be from one key person (Steve
Jobs) or developed by the group.
• The key is to develop one and then
implement!
20. Objectives
• Quantitative
– Sales, customers, retention rates, scores
– SMART—specific, measureable, action-oriented,
relevant and time-bound
– Leaders focus on measureable results and
important metrics for the organization
--And……..
21. Objectives
• Qualitative
– Soft goals that aren’t measureable by numbers
but are still important
– Culture, behavior expectations
– Leaders focus on how people feel about the
organization
Define What Success Looks Like!
23. Strategy
• Strategy is the “big picture” idea of how to
accomplish the objectives
• What types of actions and plans need to be
implemented to be successful
• People, value, position in the market,
innovation, cost, design, customers.
• What is important and where do you win?
• Example: Game Plan!
25. Tactics
• Specific actions to implement the strategy
and achieve a result
• Micro-level—day to day operations
• Need a person responsible, due date, result
expected from the specific tactic
• Prioritize!!
27. Implementation
• An OK strategy effectively implemented will
defeat a great strategy poorly implemented
100% of the time!!
• Spend time on effective implementation
• Accountability
• Put the right people in the right positions to
implement
28. Implementation
• Spend time on effective implementation
• Accountability
– Who is responsible?
– What is the due date?
– What is expected?
– What is measured?
– Who is following up?
• Old management saying: “Only what is
inspected is respected.”
29. Accountability
• Another management saying, “we treasure
what we measure!”
• Action items from meetings—great
opportunity! Review at the start of the next
meeting.
• Leadership and communication!!

Process
