BIT – How and Why
Nowadays it is very common to use ICT and related technology in classrooms because it is convenient and can help students understand the subject knowledge better. However, there are also shortcomings including lacking interaction between the teacher and students and unreliable technology.
Using technology helps to save time in class as the teacher does not have to write everything on the board, but show the teaching materials through a projector or visualizer. It is easier for students to comprehend the printed text on a computer than hand writing of a teacher.
With the help of visual aids, students can understand the subject knowledge better and their interests can be aroused. For example, as an English teacher, I want to teach prepositions of location, it is more efficient to explain the words by showing pictures to them. Some class photos can be used to arouse their interests and draw their attention.
Although technology can be useful, it also reduces the interaction between the teacher and students. To learn English effectively, students have to practice and use the language more. By presenting the subject knowledge through technology, the teacher becomes the one who control the class while students become passive. Students do not have many opportunities to speak and express themselves, which can reduce their motivation to learn.
Despite the advantage of using technology, no one could deny that technology is sometimes unreliable. Problems will arise if technology does not function very well. In the lesson of teaching prepositions of locations, I planned to build up students’ schema by showing pictures and asking students to identify a particular person in the pictures. If I just rely on the computer but technology fails to work, I will not have visual aids to help students understand. Also, I put an audio clip in the presentation software and planned to play the recording through it. If technology does not work well, the listen will have to reschedule and hinder the progress of both teaching and learning.
To conclude, technology really brings great advantages to teaching and learning, provided that the teacher does not rely too much on it. As most students nowadays can manipulate the computer very well, we can teach them to learn by themselves at home by getting information on the internet. This can be a communication tool for the teacher and students outside classroom.
