A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

20. I think my writing improved using the blog because I thought anyone could
view the blog and so I wanted it to be good when somebody looked at it.
Using the blog format wasn't hard as I did it more and more. In my opinion I
think my writing improved while using the blog, because I got to practice a lot
more. So I kept getting better and better. The best thing about posting my
letters on my blog was that I could say what I really thought of the book, I
could give my real opinion of it, and be my own person.
All in all I think using the blogs in L.A. class this year were very successful. we
could use them for a number of different things, from writing about our books,
to posting and sharing our work. I think it was a good way to broadcast who we
were to the rest of the class and anyone who was reading. By looking through
older posts I had made at the start of the year I get a flashback of all we have
done.

22. Dear Readers,
Its finally the end of the year! This might be my final blog entry if I do not
write about my summer. My entries on my blog are really heartfelt. The entries I post are
not hard, you just have to think about them. I feel that I have improved on my writing
this year I feel that I have really thought about what I am putting down on paper. It takes
me about 15 minutes to a half an hour depending on my book and the assignment. For
me it was not hard to find quotes because once I read a book I know all the parts of it
and when I am writing I just flip to the page my quote was on and put some quotation
marks and type. I really do not read books per week I read them per day. From August to
December I had already read around 25 books. I love to read.
Blog format is not hard. You just have to play around with things like I did.
Using the blog my writing really improved because I can see peoples comments and
what they think of my writing. The best thing about posting letters to you all out there is
just letting people see who I am, from my projects to my movies. The worst thing is
probably having a due date for all of my entries. I like to do them freely and have at least
a full week to do so.
Comments. I love comments I like to see you commenting on my work,
showing me what I can work on and improve by and what I am good at and should keep
up. I liked reading my classmates blog entries especially when I get to see what my
friends writing and books they have read my the Shelfari gadget
23. I did like having Ms. Casassa read my posts and comment on them because she can see
how I am doing in my writing entries. I really think the amount we are on the blogs
should be increased, but I do want to play with my own blog too.
Reading. My reading changed this year more than ever because in Ms.
Casassa's mini library there are way more choices for me to read for books and my
reading choices have changed. I always find new series and authors but I never stick to
one, I will if it is a series though. I usually choose books by myself or by
recommendation. Some people will get 50 pages into the book then say "Oh, This is
boring" and shut the book. Think of the climax, the peak of the story, sometimes it is
near the end of the book, keep reading because you never know when the climax is. I
really do not keep track of my books on Shelfari, I just read it or them and then I pick a
new series or book. I really wish I had kept track because I want to know what I have
read and not read and count how many books I have read.
Tech Projects. I loved all of my tech projects from the book trailers, to the
vokis and fakebooks. I love all of Ms. Casassa's great ides and I wonder how she gets
them. I really want to see more of them instead of blog entries. I enjoy them much
better.
I have had a great year!
Thanks for reading
-Kylie
27. I really enjoyed this project and. I couldn't stop my Fangirl scream and I had
jitters of excitement. One of the most important thing I learned from is is
probably that I understood the characters and the book very well. Another
thing I learned from this project is that it's easy, simple, and fun!
I would do this project again because it was the most fun project I’ve ever done.
What you need to say when you present our movies is “these were done by 5TH
GRADERS”
Did I enjoy it? No I didn’t enjoy it , I loved it. It was funnest book report ever. I
learned and thought about my book a lot than just a regular book report.
I think that other teachers should make book trailers with their students
because of the benefits of achievement, further knowledge with technology
and the students will enjoy it. It’s not one those book projects you dread, every
day you want work on it and make it better until you have a final project you’re
proud of.
