Mind body connection helps a lot.
Coping up Skill
“That one skill that makes humans Omnipotent”
Part 5
R.Gopinath
gopinathr@go-past.com
A recall from the part 1 of this topic:
Some people suffer more from a painful
incident (Loss), than others who face similar
situation. Why does this happen? It is quite
logical to assume that if the extent of the
loss is the same, its impact on the emotions
of different people should be the same. But
in reality it is quite different.
Some people are pushed into a state of grief
for years, while some get out of it in few
months. It is not just about the period of
grief, it is also about the intensity of the pain
they undergo (feel). Some people cope up
well with tough situations, while some don’t.
This triggers some questions in our mind
that,
Is this pain self inflicted?
can we control its intensity?
Should we have to just wait for the time to
heal the wound? Does it happen to us, or are
we causing it to happen?
Now we proceed with this current chapter:
Mind body connection helps a lot.
So much of research has been done in this
century on the way our brain functions than
no other time in past. Lots of revelations
about this small machine fitted inside our
head have been brought to light that we are
in a better position to handle this instrument
that is instrumental to the wellbeing of our
life.
These researches have brought to light
many new things about our brain. But a
majority of these findings have only
substantiated our ancient wisdom,
expressed in our ancient literature (Shastras
and Puranas) about the functioning of our
mind. Some of the practices recommended
(instructed) in those literature and have been
religiously followed by our elders, at times
ridiculed by some societies have now been
scientifically validated.
Our Body and mind are parts of the same
system. What affects one, affects the other
too. When the mind is stressed it reflects on
the body. Our thoughts are almost readable
like a open book, from our face.
This connection can be better used for our
mental well-being.
The Panchatantra system to keep up our
mental wellbeing.
1) Physical exercises are great stress
relievers. Regular exercises not only help
in keeping the body fit, it also helps in
maintaining good mental fitness.
Physical exercises increase the alertness
levels of brain.
Physical exercise releases Endorphins into
your system. Endorphins help relieve pain,
reduce stress and improve your sense of
well-being. Exercise creates
neurotransmitters that allows the flow of
happy chemicals Serotonin and stress
alleviator Dopamine.
When a patient is highly stressed, doctors
inject these chemicals into the blood. They
reach the brain and calms down the brain.
Brain feels less agitated. It calms down. It
gets into a rythm that it usually operates in.
But these chemicals reach the whole brain
and serve all its parts, which is not needed.
Whereas the Serotonin and the Dopamine
released due to physical exercise serves the
Hypothalamus region, and hence is very
effective.
So people who are finding it difficult to cope
with tough situations in life, need to regularly
exercise their body by walking, running,
swimming, skipping or any many ways of
exercising including Yogasanas.
The benefits of Yoga in enhancing the
mental wellness was clearly understood by
our ancestors. That is why in the ancient
days Yoga was a part of the curriculum in
Gurukuls. In fact it was not distinguished as
an addition to the academia. It was
considered as a part of the academia.
2) Natural open air: Breathing in the natural
open air is another tool that helps
maintaining mental well being. Oxygen
cleanses our blood. Brain that receives
adequate oxygen supply functions like a fully
charged battery.
Our life styles have made this as a rare
aspect in life. We travel in air-conditioned
cars, get into air-conditioned rooms and
even shop in air-conditioned malls. Exposure
to natural air is very limited.
So we need to slot times for this aspect on a
daily basis. Like walking in a park. Doing
Yoga in our terrace. The more the greenery
in the place, the more we enjoy the benefits
of this open-air. In fact exercise increases
our breathing and when done in open air, it
is all the more beneficial. Get as much as
open space around your place, rather
cramping every square inch of the land
available into concrete dwellings.
If this breathing can be systematised, it is
going to be all the more beneficial. That is
why Pranayama is recommended by many
medical stalwarts around the world.
3) Sunshine on our body: The good effects
of Sun Rays where well known for centuries
in our culture. Sun is the source of energy to
this world. The ray of the rising Sun was
considered very important for the health of
all plants and animals including man. This
has the capacity to annihilate disease-
causing factors and bestow good health.
According to “Rig Veda”, the rays of the
rising Sun can heal heart problems,
jaundice, anaemia etc. The “Atharva Veda”
also says that the rays have unique healing
properties for heart-related problems and for
patients suffering from anaemia.
4) Nutritious Food: Dr Dan Brown in his talks
mentions about Blue Zones identified by
researchers (Areas where people live beyond
100 years of age), found one thing in
common across the various geographies
they are spread, that is their healthy food
habits. He mentions, that at the bottom of
the Nutritional pyramid is “Plants based like
Greens, vegetables and fruits”.

There will be no disaster to one's life if one eats with moderation,
food that is not disagreeable.
Food was considered as medicine in ancient
India. There were clear rules laid on the
eatables, the time and the quantity. It was
made a part of religious rituals, so that
people don’t dare to violate it.
5) Drink more water: 70% of our
body and 80% of our brain are
functioning liquids. Water quickly
carries the nutrients from the food
consumed to the brain.
Even though the above 5 aspects
are pertaining to the body, they are very
effective in maintaining mental health.
We have seen Some people suffer more
from a painful incident (Loss), than others
who face similar situation. Why does this
happen? It is quite logical to assume that if
the extent of the loss is the same, its impact
on the emotions of different people should
be the same.

people are pushed into a state of grief for
years, while some get out of it in few
months. It is not just about the period of
grief, it is also about the intensity of the pain
they undergo (feel). Some people cope up
well with tough situations, while some don’t.
Mental wellness of the individual plays a very
important role in coping up with stressful
situations in life. Mental wellness is
fundamental for growth in any aspect of life
be it finance, profession or business.
Stay connected. In the next issue we will see
a very important tool to cope up with
challenging situations in life that is “Service
eliminates stress”.
Bye for now.

Retired life, be more joyful than a youth’s life
Part-2
R.Gopinath
gopinathr@go-past.com
It is necessary that one gets prepared for his retired
life both financially and psychologically. Because
active work life gives support to both the important
aspects of human life Finance and Psychology. The
retired phase of life can be longer, more demanding
and also restrictive in many ways. The question
therefore is that “Is retired life a grand opportunity or
a severe challenge?”
If we are well prepared, this phase can be a grand
opportunity. No preparation or even being
underprepared can make this phase of life a severe
challenge.
First let see the enormity of this issue. Please see the
chart shown here. This chart shows the dependency
years.
We are considering an hypothetical case of Mr
Ramesh here. Mr Ramesh’s age is 30. His wife Mrs
Kumari is 25 years of age. They are now celebrating
the birthday of their son, Suresh, today who is now 3
years old The first chart in Green column graph
shows the dependency years of Suresh on Ramesh.
Assuming that Suresh will start earning at his age 25,
the dependency term reduces every year by one year
and becomes zero on his turning 25.
If Mr Ramesh is blessed to live till his age 85, starting
from his age 30 now his dependency on his own
sources of finance will keep reducing from 55 years of
dependency to 0 years on his attaining age 85. This is
shown in the Blue column graph.
Mrs Kumari who is now 25 if blessed with a longevity
of 88 (female longevity>male longevity) will be
dependent on Mr Ramesh’s financial support is
shown in the Pink column graph.
How nice the scenario would be if Mr Ramesh is
creating a source to support him and his wife Mrs
Kumari for this space.
What could be the scenario if Mr Ramesh is not
prepared for this and has to look up to his son Mr
Suresh and his newly formed family for this space in
life?
Let us do a quick estimate of the amount of fund
required for this phase. Assuming that at his age 30
Mr Ramesh is spending 20,000 per month on the on-
going-essentials pertaining only to him and his wife
Mrs Kumari. To maintain the same level at his age 60,
with an inflation rate of 6%, he will require
approximately 1,20,000 per month. If he is not
prepared for this level of needs, then he has to
depend upon on his son Mr Suresh to provide him
with this amount every month for the next 25 years
and half of this amount for his wife Mrs Kumari for 8
years thereafter. This is just a minimum approximate
estimate, as we have not factored inflation post
retirement and other expenses (like medical,
ceremonies…) arising in bunches post retirement.
When we speak of retirement some businessmen and
some professionals feel that this subject is not related
to them as they will be working till their end. While
workers and employees retire at specified ages, this
is not applicable to professionals and businessmen.
However retirement can be due to other reasons as
well. Health is one of the major reasons. It is not just
critical illness that causes retirement, even a slow-
down due to ageing or changes in the body
metabolism also can cause partial or total retirement.
In a competitive world being agile both mentally and
physically is important. The changes that happen in
the technology, and in the processes can put a big
strain on people who can not catchup fast.
There is another seemingly diamond retirement for
businessmen and professionals. That is when the
next generation is installed as the head of the
business.
Whatever be the reason for retirement, the retired
person transits through 4 major stages (mentally).
The period immediately succeeding retirement is
spent like a vacation. Wake-up at will, go to bed at
will. Do things at your will or just lazy around.
But soon this phase morphs into the second stage,
where the vacation is turns into a phase of emptiness.
He starts missing his previous position (occupational)
and all that comes with it. The daily routines, the
respect, the associations, the travels etc.
If the person does not quickly recover from this state,
he is likely to go into depression or develop
indifference towards life. This happens with many of
the retired people.
Only a few people move to the third state of mind and
life, wherein they try to resettle themselves by
experimenting with many activities. They try to tuition
school children or take part in temple activities or do
some social service, or try drawing sketches, and in
the process they discover rather rediscover their inner
passion and talents. From then the life turns into a
blissful journey. He starts enjoying the life to that
extent that he feels that he had wasted all these days
in life, not just after retirement, even the days of his
job itself, that he regrets if only had he started doing
this from his age 25 itself, then how happy all these
days would have been.
If before retirement people become aware of these
stages that they need to transit into, then the
transition happens smoothly. It is also likely that they
move from stage 1(vacation) to stage 3 (resettle)
skipping the stage 2(emptiness). If well prepared then
he can move to stage 4( Rediscover) straight from
Stage 1.
In the previous chapter we saw the classification of
incomes. Passive and guaranteed income to meet the
needs during the retired life gives lots of confidence
to them. Such people find the transition mentioned in
the previous paragraphs easy and smooth. They also
feel that the transition is a choice for them. They can
as well continue in stage 1 (vacation) or move to
stage 4 (Rediscover).
We need to plan well and get prepared well for a
crucial part of our life. To do this properly we need the
help of qualified professionals.

Financial Abundance is Our Birthright
Every human being living in this planet earth has the right to live a
financially abundant life. We may be born in a poor family but we
should not die as a poor man. Some of the important things to be
followed for financial abundance are:
a) Keep our home, work area neat and Ady.
b) There should be a place for everything we use, and everything
should be kept in its place.
c) Time saved = Energy Saved = Money Saved.
d) Money is a form of PosiAve Energy, and we should remain
PosiAve to aFract that Energy.
e) Develop an aHtude of GraAtude and be thankful to God for
what we already have in life.
f) Financial abundance is about being confident and we should be
able to make decisions on money maFers – however big or
small it may be.
g) PosiAve aHtude, feeling confident and belief in ourself will help
us to dream big, set goals and work hard to achieve them.
h) Instead of living with a scarcity mindset we should have
abundance mindset because the Universe is a place of
unlimited resources and every one of us can succeed together.
i) We should share ideas and knowledge and also share them
without and hesitaAon or doubt or concern.
j) We should be ready to change. Expect the Unexpected and be
ready to embrace change even before it comes.
k) We should come out of our comfort zone because financial
abundance lies outside the comfort zone.
l) Think Big – This helps us to think out of the box for soluAons.
m) Abundance mindset helps us to focus on all the possibiliAes
available and the results we can achieve.
n) We should remove all negaAve beliefs we have about money –
Money is NOT the root of all evil. Improper use of money and
money in wrong hands will cause adverse effects.
o) Having a growth mindset will help us to use our potenAal (given
by God) fully and achieve the desired results.
p) We are born here to live our life properly. So let us not compare
us with others.
q) Our thoughts, beliefs, words and acAons decide our success in
life. So we should learn to analyse our thoughts and work
sincerely towards achieving our goals in life.
r) We can overcome scarcity mindset and negaAve beliefs about
money by using powerful affirmaAons like “Iam a Money
Magnet”, “Day by day, every day, I am becoming financially
beFer and beFer”, “Money can change my life for the beFer”,
“I can leverage my skills to earn more money any Ame”, “I can
use money to change the world for the beFer”.
s) We must understand the various financial products available for
invesAng.
t) We can discuss with our Financial Advisor and do proper “Asset
AllocaAon” to fulfil the various financial goals we have in life.
Power of Compounding is the eighth Wonder of the World
(Albert Einstein) – We should use it properly for Wealth
CreaAon and Financial Abundance.
u) Financial Pyramid is an important tool and we should start from
the foundaAon layer in the boFom – ProtecAon, Risk Free
Growth, Growth With Risk and Hi-Growth.
v) We should pay of high interest debt first. Debt free life is a fast
track to financial abundance.
w)We have to understand the fact that the current financial
situaAon is only temporary and this too shall pass. This will
keep us moAvated in our journey and achieve financial
abundance in the future.
x) InvesAng money for our self-growth is very important
y) Today’s Savings / Investment is the steppingstone for
tomorrow’s Wealth CreaAon. Income – Savings = Expenses is
the right formula for Wealth CreaAon. (Savings here means
short term savings and long term investment)
z) We get everything from everyone around us. So, Giving back to
the Society is very important.

Whatever be the reason for retirement, the retired person transits through 4 major stages (mentally). The period immediately succeeding retirement is spent like a vacation. Wake-up at will, go to bed at will. Do things at your will or just lazy around. But soon this phase morphs into the second stage, where the vacation is turns into a phase of emptiness. He starts missing his previous position (occupational)

and all thatcomes with it. The daily routines, the respect, the associations, the travels etc. If the person does not quickly recover from this state, he is likely to go into depression or develop indifference towards life. This happens with many of the retired people. Only a few people move to the third state of mind and life, wherein they try to resettle themselves by experimenting with many activities. They try to tuition school children or take part in temple activities or do some social service, or try drawing sketches, and in the process they discover rather rediscover their inner passion and talents. From then the life turns into a blissful journey. He starts enjoying the life to that extent that he feels that he had wasted all these days in life, not just after retirement, even the days of his job itself, that he regrets if only had he started doing this from his age 25 itself, then how happy all these days would have been. If before retirement people become aware of these stages that they need to transit into, then the transition happens smoothly. It is also likely that they move from stage 1(vacation) to stage 3 (resettle) skipping the stage 2(emptiness). If well prepared then he can move to stage 4( Rediscover) straight from Stage 1.

In the previouschapter we saw the classification of incomes. Passive and guaranteed income to meet the needs during the retired life gives lots of confidence to them. Such people find the transition mentioned in the previous paragraphs easy and smooth. They also feel that the transition is a choice for them. They can as well continue in stage 1 (vacation) or move to stage 4 (Rediscover). We need to plan well and get prepared well for a crucial part of our life. To do this properly we need the help of qualified professionals.
