- Good morning and welcome to the first HINZ seminar of the year. And what a year it’s going to be! Please leave your phone on and set it to silent mode. Wake up your laptop. Yes, put them up on the table in front of you. You’re going to use them. Join the Twitter chatter about our seminar on HINZ09. If 140 characters is too short for your comment, go to www.hive.org.nz and join the conversation there. We’ve set up the hive so that you can comment on each speaker’s presentation easily. The more people who tweet and blog the better the conversation will be. And it’s conversation that will mark this year in HINZ. Conversation is the beginning of people doing great things together. It’s how we share ideas, build them into something bigger, how we find common ground and change the world. Conversations connect people. We talk through our differences, reach common ground, act on our common interests. Health informatics is that conversation. It’s a live or die conversation. This is why. We have 150 people in this room today.15 of us will celebrate our 100th birthday! At the least, we can expect to celebrate our 80s together. The average age in this room is over 40 years. Half of us are overweight, and we already know what toll that’s having on our health. Half of us have a chronic condition (that may be related to our weight). Those of us who already have hypertension, heart disease, arthritis, lung problems, depression or cancer, probably took meds this morning for more than one chronic condition. Those of us who’re around to share our 85th birthday with one another, will be likely to have medicines at breakfast for five chronic conditions. We will at the very least need pharmacists and the doctors who prescribe the medicines but there aren’t enough of those people to go around! We’ll be ‘the regulars’, part of the health system but not part of it. Not free of illness, but not sick. 80% of our health budget is spent on chronic conditions and their exacerbations. It’s unsustainable. Health informatics is in a position to come into its own. Clinicians solve problems. Technologists produce solutions. Informaticians work the information. We’re not very different from one another but we live in different worlds and celebrate our differences. This situation has become untenable. In this networked, shared world we live in, we can’t pass up the opportunity to solve the health crisis together. We’re each in touch with the world as we know it but that’s not enough. The health system has been in reform for a century but that’s not been enough. We aim to transform (not reform) the health system in the 21st century but that’s not enough either. We live in a world that is so well connected that a revolution can occur in a distance country and we all participate. But we’re not yet fully participating in our own health revolution. We are the people served by the health system. And we are also the people who serve the health system. We hold part of the solution to the problem the system faces. Together we become more than the sum of the parts. HINZ is the ‘meeting place of minds’ for our health revolution. It’s where the regulars gather to swap notes about the problems and puzzles of health informatics. Become a regular. There aren’t enough conversations of the right kind for a sustainable transformation. HINZ is where the conversations of the future will make a difference. Start conversations. Join the conversations others are having. To get you going, shake hands with the person sitting next to you now and greet them. We’ll have a morning break and lunch time, which will be great for conversations. Keep the chatter going on Twitter and the hive. There is question time at the end of each presentation. Our guest speakers have some exciting innovations to show us and get us talking about using innovations to change our healthcare world.
