Slide deck from AAM Annual Meeting session on May 26, 2016.
Session description:
It seems every organization talks about digital strategy, but what does it mean, and how do you do it? In this session, three mid-sized museums, each in a different stage of digital planning, share how they’re getting things done. Panelists represent a cross-section of museums (art, history, science) and departments (education, communications, marketing, digital/IT), providing multiple points of view on how to work together to achieve a common goal. We’ll discuss institutional politics, practical constraints and the exciting possibilities that make this work both daunting and energizing. You will gain practical knowledge, a set of achievable next steps, and inspiration to make digital strategy happen for your museum.

Europeana Strategy meeting "Developing impact goals for Cultural heritage 3.0...Europeana
The Tallinn Convention on the Value of Culture to Society affirmed that culture should be seen as a net contributor to society with demonstrable impact on social cohesion, identity, welfare, sustainability, innovation, wealth and well-being. Objectives of the convention included adopting an impact framework as a common language, placing people at the center of cultural value, seeing culture as a human right and platform, and ensuring culture research is seen as equal to scientific research. Actions agreed to include funding impact measurement projects, developing non-financial return on investment frameworks, and making cultural heritage institutions hubs of innovation on par with libraries, museums and archives.
This document discusses the importance of strategic collections management for museums and archives. It argues that collections management needs to be integrated with the overall mission and goals of the organization in order to create rich experiences for users. SPECTRUM is presented as a framework that can help align people, procedures, information and systems with an organization's collecting policy to deliver on its mission. The goal of collections management should be to make the most of collections and inspire people through open and participatory experiences both online and offline.
The document provides information about the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) and Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) annual meeting being held in Baltimore, MD in October 2011. It discusses what MAP and CAP are, how they can help museums improve through self-study and peer review, and the benefits various museums have gained from the programs. MAP provides strategic planning assistance while CAP focuses on collection care and preservation. Both programs involve a self-assessment, site visit, and report with recommendations. The costs are low and the impacts have been significant for many participating museums in strengthening their operations.
Slide deck from AAM Annual Meeting in 2015: Digital Storytelling: The Dream, the Team, the Results
Media and Technology track
Tuesday, April 28, 2015
Museums can deepen audience engagement through effective storytelling. Delivering content has never been easier, due to digital interfaces and personal, portable technologies. Without a strong interpretive strategy and the right tools to craft and share our stories, we may be missing opportunities. Join this panel of experts as they describe real-world projects, share results that show the impact of digital storytelling on engagement, and demonstrate a new, free storytelling software.
Learner Outcomes
1. Attendees will learn about interpretive strategy methods and the project team approach to create and share engaging stories on digital platforms.
2. Attendees will learn about combining rapid prototyping methods with formal evaluations to create digital storytelling that delights audiences.
3. Attendees will learn how to download and use a free (open source) set of storytelling software tools developed by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
The document provides guidance for children's museums to build public value in their communities. It outlines steps to (1) understand community challenges, (2) identify the museum's strategic interests and how they align with community needs, (3) determine a public good goal that benefits the community, (4) frame measurable goals, (5) develop action strategies through partnerships and programs, and (6) assess outcomes and impact. The document includes a case study example of a museum addressing limited play opportunities for children in low-income neighborhoods.
- Wakefield addressed a backlog of undocumented collections over 8 years by assigning temporary numbers during physical inspections and creating basic inventory records for each object.
- Over 110,000 objects were documented, and 2,000 "orphan" objects were reconciled with accession records.
- The process improved documentation and allowed for strategic rationalization, reducing unprovenanced items and storage pressures.
- Retrospective documentation must be a long-term, managed process rather than a short-term project to be effective.
Using Digital Technology to Assess Quality in the ArtsCultureMetrics
This document summarizes a meeting about developing the Culture Metrics project, which aims to create a digital platform for assessing the quality of arts and culture. The project tests metrics across various artforms and organizations to measure quality, experience, engagement, and organizational health. Research will explore how the data can help organizations make creative and commercial decisions and will test whether larger data sources like social media can improve insights. Initial findings suggest co-production of metrics brings value but challenges of peer assessment remain, while interest exists in integrating bigger data but capacity is currently low.
The document summarizes a seminar held by the Collections Trust on effective collections management. It introduces the aims of the seminar which are to introduce the work of the Collections Trust, share experience in collections management practice, and provide networking opportunities. It outlines the agenda which includes speakers on the work of the Arts Council England, a case study from Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service, and a museum development update. The document provides logistical information and invites participants to discuss what they want to get out of the seminar.
This thesis examines how museums can use socially engaged outreach programming to serve as essential and transformative forces in communities. It defines socially engaged programming as on-site or off-site programs that connect people to museum content in a personally meaningful way. The thesis reviews literature on audience-centered programming and studies three case studies of engaged programs. It identifies best practices for defining audiences and operating trusted programs to deliver content appropriately. Recommendations include measuring impact and understanding audiences' contributions to reach multiple groups through partnerships.
The Collections Trust seminars are a one-day interactive workshop for people working in collections management.
They will look at the changing needs and expectations of museum audiences and how collections management practice and digital technology can help meet them. The workshop will cover:
• Being an effective advocate for the wider impact of collections management
• Using collections management to help your museum improve its services and its sustainability
• The relationship between Museum Accreditation and SPECTRUM as the standard for collections management
• How to develop a strategic approach to your collections and digital work
• How to ensure that your internal policies, procedures and systems are fit for the future
It is one of the mantras of professional development that you must have a mentor to succeed. But is that still true? This session examines how mentoring has changed in the last 10 years and whether peer support relationships are now as, or more, important to professional success. Following the panelists presentations, attendees will engage in an open fishbowl conversation.
Crowdsourcing based curation and user engagement in digital library designRose Holley
Rose Holley, Special Collections Curator at UNSW Canberra discusses the findings of her research into crowdsourcing based curation. Using the digitised historic Australian Newspapers as an example, she looks at how the functionality and interface was developed in close relationship with the users, and how this led on to text correction of newspaper articles. It is nearly ten years since this pioneering project began and the motivations and achievements of the 50,000 volunteers are examined over this time. She questions how successfully the goal of improving text quality and therefore search has been achieved. She proposes that if a similar project was begun now then artificial intelligence software would be used such as OverProof post OCR correction tool to improve the quality of the text. OverProof has been trained on the manual corrections of the Australian newspaper corpus and trials demonstrate it is able to dramatically improve the quality of the corpus. Volunteer text correction could still continue afterwards for difficult text but the software would do the main donkey work, allowing users to have a better quality search.

The Toledo Museum of Art's annual plan for July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014 outlines five strategic objectives: expanding access to collections, teaching visual literacy, increasing visibility, developing museum assets, and working with artists. Key action items for the year include digitizing archives, adding collections to the online catalog, training docents in visual literacy techniques, launching social media and marketing campaigns for exhibitions, continuing facility improvements, and expanding artist programs.
The document provides an overview of the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) organization for the 2013-2014 year. It details BEST's structure, activities, events, partnerships and highlights over the past year, which included celebrating BEST's 25th anniversary and 5 editions of the European BEST Engineering Competition. The report also discusses BEST's growth over the years to 95 local groups across 33 countries in Europe.
The document provides information on various events, exhibitions, and accomplishments at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) including:
1) The debut of the "Sound of Silents" film program with the screening of "The Man with a Movie Camera" and a performance by the Toledo Ballet.
2) The acquisition of a rare set of the early 20th century photography magazine "Camera Work" by the Apollo Society.
3) The renovation and reopening of Gallery 29 with new American art on display.
This document provides a list of publications from 2014 back to 1973 related to visual literacy. It includes books, articles, and reports from each year that could aid in studying visual literacy. The extensive chronological bibliography touches on many years and sources to help those looking to learn more about and research visual literacy.
The Toledo Museum of Art had a successful year in 2013 with the reinstallation of several galleries, acquisition of new works of art, hosting traveling exhibitions, educational programming, and recognition through awards. Major events included the opening of the reinstalled Wolfe Gallery dedicated to contemporary art, hosting the Crossing Cultures exhibition of Aboriginal art, and going "off the grid" with solar panels providing most of the Museum's electricity.
The document provides a summary of events and accomplishments at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) in 2012, including:
1) In January, TMA celebrated its 100th anniversary of moving to its current building.
2) Throughout the year, TMA hosted various exhibitions, lectures, and events, acquired new works for its collection, and undertook renovation projects like installing a new solar canopy in the parking lot.
3) Major accomplishments included partnering with Google Art Project, hosting the international Glass Art Society conference, and displaying the exhibition "Manet: Portraying Life," which received national attention.
This presentation was made to the board of directors and staff of the Toledo Museum of Art in the fall of 2011 to explain one of the Museum's strategic objectives, Increasing Visibility, in greater detail.
