Water transport is the most cost-effective mode of transporting freight in India. India has over 14,500 km of navigable waterways including rivers, canals, and backwaters, however only 455 km have been declared national waterways. Developing water transport could reduce fuel costs by 250 million INR and transportation costs by 450 million INR annually for every 1 billion tonne-km of freight shifted from road and rail. However, water transport currently accounts for just 0.1% of inland freight movement in India compared to 21% in the US due to underdevelopment of the industry. The government aims to increase the share of coastal and inland water transport to 15% and 3% respectively through developing waterway infrastructure and facilities
