A demographically-balanced panel of eighteen Akron-area residents met at the University of Akron Student Center to participate in the Informed Citizen Akron project, and were given the charge to learn from media experts, to deliberate, and to generate recommendations for how local and Ohio-based media partners can improve issue-based coverage during the 2016 presidential election.

Democracy Assistance Efforts of Young Donors from the Visegrad Group: In Sear...Paulina Pospieszna
Until recently, the major donors in democracy assistance field were Western democracies and multilateral aid agencies; therefore the literature abounds with studies of aid coming from these donors. However, little is known about the effectiveness of democracy assistance from the young donor countries that not such as long time ago were recipient of this type aid. Much of democracy assistance work is done by civil society organizations that collaborate with partners in recipient countries within specific projects. How do these projects impact the beneficiaries of the project? How effective are these project in changing opinions and behaviors of the target groups? Finally, do they contribute to diffusing democratic ideas and behaviors? This paper demonstrates the shortcomings of existing impact evaluation methods to answer these questions and demonstrates the usefulness of randomization method that so far has been widely used in developmental aid.

Social media have become essential infrastructure for public debates and the forming of political opinion. In established democracies, traditional media still play a significant role, even if their content is distributed through social media, while in many new democracies or transition countries, social media have become the dominant platform of political exchange. Facebook’s ‘Free Basics’ initiative for 42 developing countries is creating a social media monopoly in these countries. In some countries, people have come to understand Facebook as ‘the internet’, since most online interaction is mediated through Facebook.

Evolving sources of news for media - A Study
Digital and social media have been prominent buzzwords in the communications business, where professionals are increasingly leveraging interactive tools to gather information and communicate with more targeted and global audiences. The impact of the virtual world has penetrated the macrocosm that is the Indian media. The Media Insights report, conducted by multidisciplinary communications firm 20:20 MSL in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communications, sheds light on the spark behind the ideation and execution of a journalist’s story in the present-day scenario. The report is based on one-on-one interviews conducted with a stratified sample of 309 journalists from regional and national publications across the country.
The report reveals the growing redundancy of the one-time star of the communications world – the press release. The waning interest in the standard-format, and now mundane, document stems from a clutter of corporate news releases that media outposts are faced with on a daily basis. Additionally, a common sentiment that journalists have expressed is the need for first-hand fact-checking before their stories are filed. This is precisely the need that social networks fulfill. Even while adherence to convention may be the risk-free way to go, what communications professionals must understand is the scope for successful storytelling and message delivery through a social interface that empowers users to exchange content and facilitate meaningful conversations and actions.

2. Improving Issue-Based Media Coverage in the
2016 Presidential Election
PROCESS
Beginning Thursday, June 2nd, and extending through Saturday,
June 6th, a demographically-balanced panel of eighteen
Akron-area residents met at the University of Akron Student
Center to participate in the Informed Citizen Akron project.
Participants were randomly selected and stratified to represent
the population of Summit County, and were paid $400 plus travel
and childcare expenses for the entirety of their time commitment.
Citizen Jurors gathered to identify their priorities for the media
coverage, and developed recommendations for media partners to
test using strategies identified by the jurors from expert testimony.
The citizens were given the charge to learn from media experts,
to deliberate, and to generate recommendations for how local
and Ohio-based media partners can improve issue-based coverage
during the 2016 presidential election.

4. Journalism is not as easy as it looks. Media
organizations have to decide which stories to cover with
limited staff, time, and other resources. It can also be
challenging, especially during election season, to cover
many issues, opinions, and candidates while staying
neutral. There are many different sources of news and
platforms for distributing news. There are also many
opportunities for media to engage their audience by
using email, social media, SMS/text messaging, face to
face conversations, and more. Ohioans can get more
involved in seeking information.

Not everyone has the same opinion, but many have
similar interests and concerns. We need answers to
the complex questions. We’d like journalists to provide
clear, concise, accurate, and accessible information
and links to other resources so we can explore issues
in greater depth. We’d like a greater focus on our local
communities, including tying major or national issues
to local events and concerns. We’d also like journalists
to identify solutions to challenging issues, or if they
can’t, provide resources so we can work to develop our
own solutions.

5. 1. Engaging all demographics to identify the most important issues to
the community and use their input to frame media coverage.
There is a great diversity of stories and interests in our community and
they deserve to be heard. The inclusion of underrepresented individuals in
this process is essential. Opening this dialogue helps articulate community
needs and demonstrates the media’s value of these communities, which
will in turn enhance the trust between the community and the media. This
helps the community feel more engaged/empowered in the news/media,
influencing them to become involved in the election.
2. Clearly organizing accurate information in a way that is easily
accessible and researchable to people.
Providing easy access to accurate information helps the media earn the
trust of the public. This allows a greater variety of people to make more
informed decisions and establishes trust between readers and media.
3. Fact checking statements by candidates and others.
The media can support informing citizens by providing high-quality
analyses of voting records, statements about current pertinent issues and
potential conflicts of interest. Citizens cannot make informed decisions
based off of inaccurate information, and must be able to trust that the
information they consume is truthful e.g. a truth-o-meter analyzing
candidates’ statements.
4. Interactive engagement, such as quizzes to engage readers and test
their knowledge.
Journalists can use interactive engagement to understand knowledge
deficits in the community and use that information to shape coverage; as
well as compelling the audience to see what they do and don’t know, in
order to encourage them to become more informed on the issues at hand.
5. Text-based engagement to receive news
Reaches a younger, larger audience at low cost and is convenient and quick.
6. News as a conversation between readers and journalists.
It empowers the readers to become more involved in the process and
shaping media coverage to be more relevant, interesting, and engaging.

8. Your Vote Ohio is a collaboration of various Ohio
media institutions (newspapers, TV, and radio) who
know that elections are important, and that Ohio
voters care about media coverage that moves beyond
