This document summarizes Standard One of the ACRL Standards and Performance Indicators for Information Literacy. Standard One focuses on defining and articulating information needs. It is divided into 4 performance indicators addressing defining information needs, identifying potential source types and formats, considering costs and benefits of information sources, and reevaluating information needs. The performance indicators provide learning outcomes for students to effectively scope and refine their research topics and questions with guidance from instructors and librarians.
