$5 Trillion Economic Value at Stake: Digitization of Road Transportation Andreas Mai
We are in the early stages of a massively disruptive shift to electric, connected, shared (“uberization”) and self-driven vehicles. Over the next ten years, the digitization of the transportation of people and goods has the potential to create $11.4 Trillion of economic value globally. During the same time, $6.4 Trillion of value is migrating to other stakeholders, resulting in a net present value of $5 Trillion. The underlying economic model integrates over 450 effects from numerous academic and industry studies into a comprehensive financial model that describes the flow of money between the potential “winners and losers” of this transformation of road transportation.
This presentation highlights key results of the study to assist business leaders and policy makers with their innovation, investment and partnership strategies to secure the benefits and minimize the collateral damage from the imminent disruption of the transportation industry.
This document provides an overview of requirements for obtaining a Commercial Driver License (CDL) and related topics:
- A CDL is required to operate vehicles over 26,001 GVWR, combination vehicles over 26,001 GVWR with trailers over 10,001 GVWR, vehicles carrying 16 or more passengers, or vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
- Formal truck driver training is recommended to safely operate commercial vehicles and is the most reliable way to learn skills required for the profession.
- The document reviews testing requirements and disqualifying offenses for CDLs.
- International agreements allow motor carriers to operate across borders by licensing vehicles and reporting fuel taxes to jurisdictions.
The document discusses several regulations impacting the trucking industry and their effects. It notes that the top challenge is the driver shortage, and that three major regulations - CSA, HOS reset rules, and upcoming ELDs - are having the biggest impacts. It estimates that over 160,000 additional drivers will be needed by 2016 due to new regulations reducing productivity. Regulations are also increasing costs, such as through higher insurance rates and wages. The aging driver population and lack of interest in driving careers exacerbates the capacity challenges faced by the industry.
Connected Vehicles—Insurance: The Business of Preventing Crashes Andreas Mai
Connected vehicles have the potential to significantly reduce costs for the insurance industry and society by preventing crashes. Insurance companies can track driver behavior through telematics devices to better price premiums, with some offering pay-as-you-drive and pay-how-you-drive models. Connected vehicle technologies may be able to prevent up to 80% of crashes through features like collision avoidance systems and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. A unified in-vehicle connectivity platform could further reduce insurance operating costs and unlock additional value of over $380 per connected vehicle annually for insurance providers.

State insurance agency ridesharing warnings: Rhode island consumer alertHarrison Weber
The Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation Insurance Division issued a consumer alert about potential insurance gaps for Rhode Island residents participating in ride-sharing programs like Lyft and UberX. Drivers for these programs may not have valid insurance coverage since most personal auto policies exclude coverage for driving passengers for hire. Ride-sharing drivers need to contact their insurance agents to ensure they have proper commercial coverage, and also need to be licensed as for-hire transportation services through the Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers. Passengers also risk lack of coverage if they are injured in an accident with an uninsured ride-sharing driver.

Progressive Insurance was founded in 1937 and pioneered innovations in the auto insurance industry, such as offering policies to high-risk drivers and 24/7 claims services. In the 1990s, Progressive launched further innovations like providing competitor quotes over the phone and using immediate response vehicles to quickly settle claims on-site. One major innovation was Autograph, launched in 2000, which used GPS technology to track vehicle usage and offer lower rates to drivers with good behavior. While innovations increased efficiency and customer service, they also increased costs and raised privacy concerns, so recommendations were made to expand technologies slowly and focus on research and larger cities first.

SPYCA aims to address the growing threat of hackers gaining remote access to internet-connected vehicles. While a step toward protecting consumers, the document argues SPYCA has flaws and may conflict with existing copyright law. To be effective, it asserts SPYCA must require automakers to provide software access to independent analysts for security reviews before complying with the act. This would allow vulnerabilities to be found and addressed without automaker approval, improving safety.

Acme technology and the future of auto insurance - december 4, 2014Blair Currie
The document discusses how autonomous vehicles and digital technologies will transform the auto insurance industry over the next decade. It outlines how technologies like car sharing, telematics, collision avoidance, and autonomous vehicles themselves will impact insurance claims frequencies and premiums. This will force insurance companies to enhance or remove services, form alliances, and adapt their marketing, sales, underwriting, and claims processes to address a changing business model and technology-savvy customers. The growth of autonomous vehicles specifically could lead to fewer human errors and accidents, separating driver risk from vehicle risk, and reducing the need for auto insurance over time.
Connected cars are becoming increasingly central to drivers' lives as vehicles integrate with mobile devices and the internet. The document discusses how connected car platforms like Remoto provide remote control, security, infotainment and other services. It notes that by 2020, 1 in 5 vehicles worldwide will be internet-connected. Connected car services are becoming an important competitive advantage and value-add for automakers and dealerships.

Insuring Autonomous Vehicles: An $81 Billion Opportunity Between Now and 2025 Accenture Insurance
Stevens Institute of Technology predicts that as many as 23 million fully autonomous vehicles will be traveling US highways by 2035. This presents the automobile insurance industry with a significant near-term opportunity. We estimate that the switch to autonomous vehicles will generate at least $81 billion in new insurance revenues in the US between 2020 and 2025. Autonomous vehicles will be owned by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), over the top players and other providers such as ride-sharing companies, but models designed by Accenture in collaboration with Stevens institute indicate that these decreases will be offset by new insurance product lines. Insurers should be taking action now to change and adapt their business models to convert this opportunity.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

1. ELD Mandate: Things You Must Know
FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) has made it mandatory for all
truck drivers in United States to install an electronic logging device (ELD). It allows
trucking companies to track driving information as well as non-driving activities of
their drivers.
FMCSA has created a strict compliance schedule for motor carriers. After December
16, 2019 all the drivers and carriers operating in the US will be required to track HOS
using only registered and compliant electronic logging devices.
