A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

An acclaimed poet’s 1920 work is believed to be inspired by a legendary work
from over five centuries before it, in which the worst offenders are punished in a
way that is diametrically opposite to the environment they are in. The number
of lines in the 1920 work, as well as the structure, meter and rhyme scheme,
mimic the older work. Its compactness, as well as the casual tone masking
serious underlying themes, have been appreciated by critics.
However, astronomer Harlow Shapley claims an encounter he had with the
poet in 1919, where they discussed the sun’s eventual explosion, either
incinerating the solar system or causing temperatures to drastically drop, was
the actual inspo behind the poem. Regardless, the two works have gone on to
become iconic in their own right, being referenced in various other books, films
etc. Name the 1920 poem as well as the older work.

Dante’s Inferno / Divine Comedy
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

In February 2019, multilingual hip-hop band Swadesi released The _____ Revolt
(image follows), which was a collaborative piece with Adivasi tribal chieftain
Prakash Bhoir, and became an anthem for a social movement taking place at
the same time. The name of the song (the blank) is the name of a tribe that was
being threatened by an ongoing government project, and the song’s lyrics warn
the public about the dangers of unsustainable development, deforestation, loss
of natural resources and displacement of indigenous people and tribes. This
project got national attention, became a major voting issue for the state and
was eventually reversed by the subsequent government.
Fill in the blank with the name of the tribe, whom we mostly know through
their world-famous eponymous art form.
What government project were they protesting against?

12. The book X used the song Landslide by Fleetwood Mac as the backdrop of a couple of
iconic scenes. When the song initially plays on the radio, the characters do not recognize it
but instantly connect with it. By the time of the climactic scene, the protagonist is finally
able to express his love and recreates their earlier experience by playing this song in a
moment of exhilaration.
When the book was being adapted to a movie, it was decided to replace Landslide with a
“punchier” song, accurately depicting the euphoria of the climactic scene. Though it is a
little hard to believe that rock-loving teenagers from the early 90s would not recognize
one of the most famous songs by one of rock’s biggest icons, the song itself also fits the
theme, talking about lovers who are separated by a barrier but are finally able to meet,
even if just for one day.

The first spinoff to a critically and commercially acclaimed franchise was
released in 2016, and was slightly experimental as it was set in a different time
and had a different cast than the franchise itself. The spinoff was a success and
became a series of its own, with a sequel releasing in 2018 and more in the
works. Faced with the challenge of both communicating the connection to the
original story and establishing that it was a different series entirely, the
producers hired a design time to create a branding style, which included color
schemes, graphics and a font style. This font evoked the parent franchise’s
design style, as well as the themes of the films themselves.
Punnily, the design team named the font by replacing a few letters in the name
of an iconic typeface, which turned one word in the font name into a callback to
the second sequel’s title. What was the font named? What film?

18. The work X originally released in 1990 has often drawn comparison to another work,
Y, from the same genre from the early 19th century. The older work was a pioneer in
the genre, featuring themes like man’s hubris, and the consequent horror and lack of
understanding of his own creation. The newer work also features similar motifs, with
the “creator” Henry Wu not even knowing the names of some of his creations, which
have been spliced together from different forms of life. Name the 2 works X and Y.
Though the central treatise of X is a demonstration of chaos theory (how complex
systems have instabilities built in), the eventual downfall of the central project in the
work is triggered by just one person. The chief programmer for the project had
programmed in a backdoor entry to to access the mainframe and make undetected
changes. This backdoor command was named after a character from a book from
155 years ago from now, who the protagonist follows through a similar secret “door”
to a world of wonder and mystery beyond. Name the command/ character.

The Long-Legged Fly, or dolichopodidae, are a family of flies that use cohesive
forces between liquid molecules and the resultant surface tension for their
movement. They are a symbol of calm resistance against the greatest of
opposing forces, such as in W. B. Yeats’ Long-Legged Fly, which is about the role
silence plays in the fostering of great minds. Each of the poem’s three stanzas
focuses on a person from history/myth: Julius Caesar (military tactics), Helen of
Troy (beauty), and Michelangelo (artistic creation). The poem’s refrain is:
‘Like a long-legged fly upon the stream
His/her mind moves upon silence.’
The second stanza of this poem is used as the epigraph
of which 1983 bildungsroman American novel, which
recently returned to popular consciousness?

80. __ ____ ___ ___ was a 4-part 2019 documentary commemorating the 25th
anniversary of the formation of the Wu-Tang Clan. The title is a play on a novel
set during the Great Depression, changing just one letter in the 2nd word. The
changed title reflects the tool that most members of the group use.
2 of the members of the group have similar sounding (and short) stage names,
separated by one letter. A more contemporary, critically acclaimed neo-soul
artist has a similar stage name, changing the same letter. Though this name is
an acronym derived from the “Supreme Alphabet” — part of the religious belief
system of the Nation of Gods and Earths, she admits to having been influenced
by the Clan while young. Who? Also FITB.

______day is observed annually in a specific European city, and also across the
world, on 16 June - the specific date and the specific city making a reference to
an iconic work. "It is quite impossible to imagine any other masterpiece of
modernism having quite such an effect on the life of a city," it is said. The first
celebration is believed to have been in 1924, and nowadays enthusiasts dress
up in the style of the work, hold performances and enactments, and people in
the city are treated to a free breakfast consisting of sausages, rashers, toast,
beans, and black and white puddings.

was modeled on a common archetype which has been seen in all sorts of narrative
media, from Dickens to Star Wars and beyond. This is reflected in the title of the

“Threshold”, “Trials”, “Temptations”, “Atonement” and “Apotheosis” which occur in a

The game can be played solo or with a randomly assigned online companion. The

the rural confines of the protagonist’s hometown and the urban glitz and glamor

lives of the rich and poor.
Both works feature their protagonists using cunning and illegal methods to climb
higher in society, often at the expense of other people in their social spectra, and
ultimately of their masters’. The protagonist in X is forced to live in the basement of
his master’s high-rise building in a city as a servant, while certain characters in Y are

A certain type of ceremony that dates back to the 1700s saw
two portrayals in the pop culture world in 2020:
● The first is named after the lady in the first photo, and
was founded in 1780 as a birthday celebration for her.
Originally serving as a fundraiser for a hospital, it was
suspended in the 20th century, but revived in the 21st,
with a focus on teaching business skills, networking,

● The second was started in 1992 by the second lady, and

charity and networking is a focus, it has faced flak for
nepotism and fetishization of inherited wealth & fame.

The book Unbearable Lightness of Being has characters classified as living with
“lightness” or “heaviness”. Accepting lightness of being means accepting a certain lack of
ultimate meaning in life, and living for momentary beauty. Living with heaviness means
attaching a meaning and weight to what one considers important in life.
Sabina, a character who lives her life with utmost lightness and never stays attached to
one person or place, nevertheless possesses a/an X, a hand-me-down from her
grandfather. X takes on multiple roles throughout the book as a relic of the past which
she cannot let go of, and as a contrast to the very feminine image of Sabina we are
presented with. It is a/an X and is also not a/an X at the same time.
The same item, X, is used frequently by a certain artist in his works. His fascination with
the object was because it “poses no surprises. The man with a/an X is just a middle-class
man in his anonymity”, though his works are often shrouded in mystery. Which artist,

A 2017 Taiwanese film, “## __, _ ____ ___” (Number, unit, three words) has a plot
featuring many love stories set in modern Taipei City on Valentine's Day. The
musical film has been called ‘Taiwan’s answer to La La Land’, and is about how
lonely voices can be answered, even in a busy city where people face alienation.
Sometimes, you just need to find someone who understands your song.
The title of the film references an individual, which has become a world-famous
metaphor for loneliness and wanting to find love. Since 1989, this individual’s
unique and lonesome existence has gripped the attention of people in various
fields. BTS's 2015 song "_______ ##", explicitly uses the individual as a metaphor
for the alienation often felt by adolescents who think nobody understands them.
Who is the individual? (if you can’t give the ##, the three-word moniker this
individual has been given is also an acceptable answer)

115. The word X began being used in the 19th century to describe works like Dracula, Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and others. It gained popularity due to Sigmund Freud’s 1919 book,
The X, where he called it “the class of the terrifying which leads us back to long known to
us, once very familiar”. He called E.T.A. Hoffman the master of the genre, with his work
The Sandman being mentioned in particular.
The tell-tale signs of the genre were supernatural elements juxtaposed with real-life
settings, a sense of deja vu in a new & exotic setting and a blurring of lines between
humans and their doppelgangers.
This concept has seen a revival in the past half century in the form of XY, referring to the
eeriness experienced by humans when faced with objects resembling themselves. This
concept has been studied in the fields of AR, VR, animation, video games, etc.

This item is named after a species of first mentioned in Pliny's Naturalis
Historia. Ostrich, marabou, chandelle, and turkey are the most common
types of this item, although with change in time and general thought, there
has been a conscious effort to move away from these types. Popular
amongst women in the 1888s upto the roaring 20s, and even immortalized in
a work by Klimt, the stock market crash of 1929 led to a decline in popularity
of this extravagant item. It was relegated to performance culture, eroticism
and certain marginalized sections of society.
Recently, with a rise of flamboyance chic and gender-bending, as well as a
return to fashions of old, this item is back in vogue. Very very recently, as per
