LEVEL 1 - INDUSTRIAL PROTOCOLS
Industrial Protocols are the drivers commonly used to exchange data between SCADA/DCS modules and the Assets. Below is a list
with the main ones:
• Modbus RTU/TCP ... 1979 (Modicon)
• OPC (DA/AE, UA) ... OPC Foundation (1994 OPC DA/AE, 2015 OPC UA)
• IEC 60870-5-101/4 … Automation Control System (1990 IEC – TC5)
• DNP3 ... Telemetry and Automation Control System (1993 DNP.ORG)
• IEC61850 … Electrical grid (2002 IEC – TC57)
• MT Connect ... Numerical Control Standard Protocol (2006 AMT)
• Focas Fanuc ... GE Fanuc proprietary protocol
• S7 Protocol ... Siemens proprietary protocol
It is also possible to collect data also through custom APIs provided by Machines Manufacturers (usually XML format) or consuming
data from .csv, and .txt files stored in a shared folder.

Typical Data Collectors
In Industrial Automation usually there are two systems aimed to collect, store,
and visualize data:
o SCADA... Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition is a control system used
in industrial domain to monitor and control industrial processes and
physical assets.
o DCS... Distributed Control System is a SCADA in which the database is
shared among the SCADA and the PLC. According to the data exchanged,
each PLC can set actions.
