What song have we chosen?
Mudhoney – ‘Good Enough’
Why will this song appeal to our target
audience?
This song fits into the alternative rock genre. The fans of this genre are primarily within our target
audience demographic of late teenagers and early adults.
Lyrically, the song is extremely suitable for people within this demographic, as it focuses on
romance, which is stereotypically a common and relatable theme with ‘young people’.
Furthermore, the band themselves wrote this song when within this target audience group, making
it more understandable to people of this age.
The song reflects the sounds of many loved alternative rock bands today, such as Arctic Monkeys
and the Foo Fighters. This makes this song the most effective when drawing in fans of the genre,
which therefore allows us to gain the attention of our target audience, being fans of this music
genre.
Finally, the song is upbeat and melodic, making it instantly appeal to fans of this genre as it is
pleasant to listen to in general.
Who is our artist/band?
We decided to name our band/artist ‘Disciples of London’. This name reflects our bands origins, as
well as being suitable for our band’s genre of alternative rock.
Why would our artist/band appeal to our
target audience?
Our band would be likable to our target audience for three primary reasons.
Firstly, the band itself fits within our target audience demographic, meaning our band would be
more relatable and familiar due to us being the same age as our target audience.
Secondly, the band’s fashion sense, as seen in the performance shots of our music video, reflects
the genre of music we are playing. Therefore, this is the same fashion taste of our target audience,
who are primarily fans of alternative rock in their late teenage years, who would likely wear similar
clothing as seen in the video. Through making our band more relatable to our target audience in
such ways, we are improving the connections between the artist and fans.
Finally, the image surrounding our band is a rebellious one, enhanced by the use of graffiti as cover
work on our bands digi-pack. This would make us more likable to our target audience who are
stereotypically rebellious too.
Narrative:
Our music video features both performance and narrative scenes, so fits into Sven E. Carlsson's ‘Televised Bard’
category of music video.
The narrative revolves around four males in their late teens, who are attempting to get their band signed to a
record label. Upon entering an arrogant and loud band manger’s office, they will be ridiculed on their style and
sound as a band, they will be told they are ‘irrelevant’ in this day and age. They will then be given a folder by the
band manager, which will contain pictures of famous musical icons, such as Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. They
will be told by the manager to ‘get some inspiration’, and then told to ‘get out of my office’. Rejected by the label,
the four band members become desperate, and start to copy the styles of these music icons exactly, and to some
extent their lifestyles too, e.g. Kurt Cobain – smokes. Each band members ‘wannabe’ attitude becomes
increasingly more pathetic and humorous as the music video progresses. This will aid the video in being more
entertaining. Eventually, the band members come to realise that they have completely lost their own identities,
so ditch their ‘copy-cat’ styles in favour of being true to themselves. This results in no further success with the
record label, with them being told by the band manager at the end of the video, that they are ‘still irrelevant’
after performing as a band.
However, the narrative will be interjected by various performance shots throughout the music video, in order to
increase viewer interest.
