What is an Indirect Question?
• An indirect question is a more polite or formal
way to ask something.
• Common phrases that start indirect questions:
• - Do you know…
• - Can you tell me…
• - I wonder…
• - I'd like to know…
• - She asked me…
Rules for Indirect Questions
• - Use statement word order: Subject + Verb
• ✅ where he is ❌ where is he
• - For yes/no questions, use if or whether
• I wonder if she is at home.
• Do you know whether it’s open?
• - Don’t use do/does/did in the question part.
• - No question mark unless the whole sentence
is a question.
Examples
• Direct: Where is the bank? → Indirect: Do you
know where the bank is?
• Direct: What time does the movie start? →
Indirect: Can you tell me what time the movie
starts?
• Direct: Is he coming today? → Indirect: I
wonder if he is coming today.
