Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar, India to a Hindu family. He faced discrimination as a student in South Africa, fueling his commitment to nonviolence and civil rights. Gandhi led numerous nonviolent movements for Indian independence and justice, including the Salt March. Through peaceful protests, Gandhi was instrumental in India gaining independence from British rule in 1947. However, he was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist who opposed Gandhi's tolerance of Muslims.

Nathuram Godse assassinated Mohandas Gandhi on January 30, 1948 by firing three shots from a pistol at close range. Godse was a Hindu nationalist who opposed Gandhi's support for a secular India and his negotiations with Muslim leaders. There had been five previous unsuccessful attempts to kill Gandhi. At his trial, Godse stated his belief that Gandhi threatened India by supporting Muslim interests over Hindus and not backing armed revolutionaries. Godse was sentenced to death and executed on November 8, 1949.

They were forced to grow indigo and give their entire harvest as rent. When Germany developed synthetic indigo, the landlords tried to free the peasants from their contracts but force them to pay compensation. Gandhi helped the peasants get an honorable settlement. He represented them in an inquiry commission and negotiated a 25% refund of extorted money from the landlords. Gandhi's involvement marked an important early victory for civil disobedience in India.

- 2. Today, I will tell you about how Champaran incident did not begin as an act of defiance. It grew out of an attempt to make the suffering of a large number of poor peasants less severe and main points of this part of the lesson INDIGO class xii written by LOUIS FISCHER
- 3. Social Work in Champaran =Champaran incident did not begin as an act of defiance. It grew out of an attempt to make the suffering of a large number of poor peasants less severe. =Gandhi concentrated on their practical day to day problems. =He took significant step to eradicate it. =Gandhi saw the cultural and social backwardness in the Champaran villages. = He wanted to do something about it immediately. =In order to educate them he made an appeal for teachers. His two new young pupils Mahadev Desai, Narhari Parikh and their wives offered to work.
- 4. =Several more teachers came from Bombay (Mumbai), Poona and other distant parts of India. =With their help Gandhi opened schools in six villages and taught cleanliness and sanitation. =In order to improve the miserable health conditions, Gandhiji got a doctor. He volunteered his services for six months. =There were three medicines available castor oil, quinine and sulphur ointment. Person with coated tongue were given a dose of castor oil. Those with malaria fever got quinine plus castor oil. Others with skin eruptions got ointment plus castor oil.
- 5. =Kasturba talked to the women to get rid of their filthy state of clothes. =During his long stay at Champaran, Gandhiji taught people self- reliance and freedom from the fear of the British. Thus, he paved the path for the freedom of India. Gandhi and Kasturba with children
- 6. Champaran Episode-A turning point =The Champaran episode was a turning point in Gandhi’s life. = It was not a simple victory; it awoke the soul of the poor peasants. Gandhi tried to mold/change a new free Indian. = He wanted to stand them in his own feet and thus make India free. =Some people wanted C.F. Andrews to stay in Champaran and help them. But Gandhi opposed it. =He didn’t want that Indians should take the help of an Englishman in their own struggle for freedom.
- 7. =Gandhiji showed the poor peasants how to fight the British with ‘satyagraha’. He made them aware of their power and the power of ahimsa. =All this laid the foundation of his future movements and served as a great source of strength and motivation for all Indians. We can say: =The people realized the value of self-reliance. =The countrymen embarked on the task of national freedom movement. =Thus, it was a turning point in Gandhi’s life.

Gandhi convinced the lawyers about Charles Freer Andrews. =In early Champaran action, Charles Freer Andrews, the English pacifist became a devoted follower of Gandhi. =Before going to a tour to duty to Fizi island he came to bid Gandhi farewell. =Gandhi’ lawyer friend wanted him to stay and help them. Gandhi strongly opposed them. =If they get an Englishman on their side, it would show the weakness of their heart. =They must rely on themselves to win the battle.
