21. Urban vs Nature
“Human beings are … a part of nature, as much so as
grizzly bears or bees or whales or sorghum cane. The
cities of human beings are as natural, being a product
of one form of nature, as are colonies of prairie dogs or
the beds of oysters.”
- Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, 1961.
23. Bob the medicine tree by DJS
This is Bob, he lives on my favourite tree;
does this tree belong to her, does this tree belong to me?
If a tree grows in the forest, do we get to breathe the air;
if a forest grows on a tree, does anyone know its there?
When the bear marks his territory, does someone stop to care;
when mushrooms blossom in the storey, does it help to heal the tear?
If a tree falls in the forest, does the land remember;
if a seedling waits in hiding, is it January, or December?
Does this tree belong to her, does she belong to this tree;
we named this bracket Bob, he lives in our favourite tree.
Originally, the term “Toronto” referred to Matchedash Bay, and was recorded with various spellings in French and English, including Tarento, Tarontha, Taronto, Toranto, Torento, Toronto, and Toronton.

Mainstream cultures the world over are struggling to engaged Indigenous cultures. As the image indicates, this includes our Australian cousins.

Does this represent the Duty to Consult and Accommodate, or the “Free, Prior, Informed Consent”, just how to please the neighbours…
FN perspective
Assert political right to be here
Solve social problem of disjointed community (we are “safer” united, not so “divide & conquered”)
Demonstrate ecological protective capacity
Secure livelihoods for future generations
Cottager perspective
Last years developer is this years environmentalist
Inherently adversarial; less park = more development
Well connected politically and know which buttons to push
Ontario Parks
Worried about disjointed park (we are “safer” united, not so “divide & conquered”)
Concerned about ecological functions, as if humans are not part of nature
Creates park for people to visit, but created a people-less park without regard for the people who were already there
Ontario Parks Ecological Assessment concludes “value” of “lost” land equals that gained elsewhere, if boundary shifts from N.R. to I.R.
Ignores past & future role of MDP in protection of Matawbik
Dignity of Modernity is its ability to differentiate between the old Platonic ideals of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty; perhaps also adding Usefulness (Science, Morals, Art, and Society). However, the Disaster of Modernity is that it went too far. Truth, Goodness, Beauty, and Usefulness are now dissociated. We are currently in a struggle to reunite them, as the overlapping circles suggest. It is being replaced with a concentric ring model, but even that may not be enough… Indigenous societies never quite gave up on a unified concept, but what will the next model look like?
