The music video for Metric's song "gold, guns, girls" represents the band as stylish with modern, expensive clothing. The lyrics criticize those who are never satisfied and want more material possessions and power instead of just living their lives. This theme of criticizing the pursuit of wealth and status is common in indie pop music, which often uses upbeat music to discuss serious issues.

1. Representation ideologies and values
These screen shots are from the music video for the song
‘gold, guns, girls’ by Metric.
The band is represented as quite stylish and as having modern, fairly
expensive clothing.
The lyrics for the song are about how some people are never happy
with what they have, ‘all the gold and the guns in the world couldn't
get you off’, ‘is it ever going to be enough’. The song is about how
people want more and more and other people lose out, hence the run
down city environment the video is set in. People are too concerned
with material possessions and power; they should just be living their
lives. The video draws attention to this problem, showing it in a
negative light through things such as the use of black and white.
This is common of the genre indie pop because it is usually fairly
upbeat music that is about more serious issues/situations.
2. Cinematography and editing
1. Amy can fly
Mainly uses close ups to show each band member as this
helps promote and introduce the band members but does
cut to long shots to show them all as a band. It also helps
show them as an indie and in the way of how they dress and
their image. It also uses high tilt angles through out the
video to vary the angles used.
The video also uses cross cutting as it switches from the
back story line to scenes of the band playing the song using
a jump cut.
2. We are the in crowd.
This band uses close up shots which links to their use of
twitter as they use this to link from one story to another.
The video uses a lot of panning aerial shots to help shot the
band but when it goes to the individual stories it generally
uses eyelevel mid close up shots and long shots to help see
the people more clearly.
3. Mise-en-scene
Metric- gimme sympathy
The bands genre of indie pop and new wave is
reflected through their clothes to give a brand identity
and to relate their clothing to the genre of music. Their
clothing also fits with the conventional idea of indie
clothing- bold prints. The through the clothing in this
shot you can clearly see who is the main singer and
who are the band, because the band at the back are in
black and the main singer is in a patterned dress.
Florence and the machine is a band that has a variety of
genres, one being indie pop. As well as the indie fashion being
bold prints , I think the fashion also looks quiet vintage, which
is shown through Florence's dress sense. In a lot of Florence's
music videos she looks quiet vintage in the fashion this
creates a brand identity.
