 The World bank organization defines poverty 
as- 
 If his or her income level falls below some 
minimum level necessary to meet basic needs 
 Necessity to satisfy basic needs varies across 
time and societies 
 Poverty lines vary in time and place, and each 
country uses lines which are appropriate to its 
level of development, societal norms and 
values
33% of global poor now resides in India 
2nd most populous country in the world, 
with over 1.18 billion people; expected to 
surpass china by 2025 
41% of the population of India lives under 
the global poverty line of USD 1.25 a day 
(as per world bank)
High inflation rate of around 8-10% 
affecting essential commodities such as 
food products causing a decline in 
purchasing power 
Highly uneven economic growth across 
different states such as Bihar, 
Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand facing 
acute poverty ; levels

 Serious issues like growing poverty can impact the overall 
development of the next superpowers

OCriteria:- OGrowth-oriented economy OStable political system and good law and order OWell developed nuclear and defence system OMembership and influencing capacity in the powerful global bodies such as United nations, WTO, NATO and IMF OStrong cultural presence and contributions to the world.

  • 6. Being a superpower needs- OUnity, political unity and stability OHigh level defence and military capability including nuclear weapons OTrained manpower OHigh technology
  • 7.  Fourth largest army in the world  One of the eight countries with nuclear technology and space technology  Globally recognized for being a leader in the filed of information technology  A strong and stable democratic system, with division of power and duties between central and state governments  Membership of bodies such as SAARC and WTO
  • 8.  Eleventh largest economy of the world by GDP- USD 1.3 trillion  Fourth largest economy by purchasing power parity(PPP) – USD 3.8 trillion  Growth rate of approx. 8.9% pa; one of the fastest growing nations in the world  Service industry accounting for more than 57% of the country’s GDP followed by industry and agriculture at 28% and 15% respectively
  • 9.  65% of the Indian population is below 35 years of age, contributing to a massive work force  Has fifth largest forex reserves amongst developing economies  Largest number of trained scientists in the world

Barriers to becoming a superpower   25% of the total population below poverty line  Illiteracy  Corruption  Poor quality of national politics  Ineffective population control programme  No production of nuclear submarines  Poor infrastructure relating to health and sanitation, education and housing  Uneven and inequitable distribution of wealth
  • 12. 41% of India’s population lives on less than $2 a day- World bank

Poverty – A bane to nation  The World bank organization defines poverty as-  If his or her income level falls below some minimum level necessary to meet basic needs  Necessity to satisfy basic needs varies across time and societies  Poverty lines vary in time and place, and each country uses lines which are appropriate to its level of development, societal norms and values
  • 14. 33% of global poor now resides in India 2nd most populous country in the world, with over 1.18 billion people; expected to surpass china by 2025 41% of the population of India lives under the global poverty line of USD 1.25 a day (as per world bank)
  • 15. High inflation rate of around 8-10% affecting essential commodities such as food products causing a decline in purchasing power Highly uneven economic growth across different states such as Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand facing acute poverty ; levels
  • 16. Rich vs. Poor • A great portion of India’s population is a victim of rising monetary deficits • The top 10% of India’s population enjoys 31.1% of the country’s income • The lowest 10% suffers with merely 3.6%
  • 18. CAUSES OF POVERTY IN INDIA • High population growth rate • Unequal distribution of income • Caste system in our country • Unemployment • British era • Wrong liberalization policy
  • 19. Steps to abate Poverty  Proper distribution of wealth  Increase stress on education  Reservation of seats in government jobs  More poverty reduction programmes  Empowerment of women and economically weaker sections of the society  Development planning

Conclusion  The indicators are showing positive signs  India has to go a long way to become a superpower  Fresh weakness will emerge  Wrong to say that our country has not made a substantial all round progress  Serious issues like growing poverty can impact the overall development of the next superpowers
