3. As an organization World Vision started an office in
Calcutta in 1962 which was one of the first offices
outside the United States.
In 1975 World Vision India was registered as a
society in Chennai, Tamil Naidu.
The Founder was Robert Pierce.
4. WHY INDIA?
Many Indian Children suffer from poverty. More
than 50% of India’s total population lives below the
poverty line, and more than 40% of this population
are children.
Traditional cultural values, discrimination and
society cruelty of children's ability to create change
are the main reasons why Indian children suffer
from poverty and end up with no water supply or
food.

6. INITIATIVES OF WVI
Disaster relief : Wave Struck in Andhra Pradesh
(1977), Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984), Orissa Super
Cyclone (1999), Gujarat Earthquake (2001) were
among its major relief interventions.
Children’s education and health : WVI’s child
scholarship programme help needy children get
access to clean water, sanitation, education, skills
for future livelihood, nutrition, health care, etc.
The scholarship amount per month is Rs. 800 (in
India)

Did you know 34.54% of Indian women are
illiterate?
1. Educating girls curbs child marriage : When a girl in
the developing world receives seven years of
education, she marries four years later and has 2.2
fewer children.
2. Educated girls earn more money… : An extra year
of primary school education boosts girl’ eventual
wages by 10-20%. An extra year of secondary school
adds 15-25%.
3. And they spend it wisely : Women invest 90% of
their income in their household, as opposed to men’s
30-40%.

future children : Educated mothers are 50% more
likely to immunize their children. And when more
girls are educated, a country’s malnutrition and HIV
rates decline.

3%.
