1. Giving Thanks With A Grateful Heart
Supari Tank English Municipal School, Mumbai
Grade 4 students
Mentor Teachers: Sachin Jain and Elena D'Souza
Step 1: Feel
1) We brainstormed for a long time and discussed many problems. After all this, one
student suggested that instead of focusing on the negatives, we should celebrate the
positives that we see. There are many people who help us in our daily lives but who are
often unappreciated. She suggested that we show them that we are grateful for all that
they do.
2) This suggestion of appreciating the effort of people really struck a note in our hearts and
after some more discussion we decided to adopt this as our project.
Step 2: Imagine
1) We divided into groups and discussed the importance of showing appreciation and
gratitude. We felt that the people would feel energised about their often thankless tasks. They
would feel inspired to continue to do the job better and that a simple thank you would brighten
up their day.
2) We then discussed the different people who help us in our daily lives. We identified three
groups of people ie our family members, the staff in school and other people with whom we
come in contact daily like the traffic policeman.
Step 3 : Do
1) Charged up with this idea, we then discussed the best ways to show our gratitude and
appreciation. We hit upon the idea of each student making personalised cards for two people
who have touched their lives and to whom they are grateful.
2) All of us, got down enthusistically and made lovely heartfelt cards. Though ,we knew that it
was the thought behind the card that mattered and not the appearacnce, yet most of us worked
really hard to make our cards as pretty as possible. We then wrote a few words of thanks to
them.
3) The next day we went around giving the cards. We gave the cards to our parents and we
were thrilled to see the surprise and happiness on their face.
4) We also made cards for the principal and the teachers in the school. We gave apprecation
cards to the cleaner and the watchman of our school. They are the silent workers but they
form the back bone of the school. The smile on their faces reflected the ones on ours.
5) A couple of us made cards for the traffic policeman near the school.
2. Step 4: Share
The next day, we got together and discussed our experiences. We noticed that we felt as happy
as the people receiving the cards. We decided that we should always show our appreciation and
gratitude to others in what every small way we can, by a smile , a simple but meaningful thank
you or even a few words of encouragement. These simple things help make the world a better
place.
We changed other peoples lives by bringing them joy. We reached out to almost 50 people. We
also changed ourselves. We learnt the important values of gratitude and appreciation of the
efforts of others. We also learnt the importance of working together in a team, sharing ideas and
listening to the opinions of others.
