BRAINSTORMING
What does it mean to be a caring
person?
List the dos and don’ts for being caring.
Introduction and Warm-Up
The Caring Chair
Bring a chair up to the front of the
classroom and tell the students it will
temporarily be known as the “Caring
Chair.” Invite students to come up one at
a time to sit in the chair and give an
example of a way to show caring—at
school, at home, or in the community.
Concept Exploration
Agree or disagree: Some people
say that kids are selfish and self-
absorbed and don’t care about
anything but themselves.
How do you know if someone cares
about you?
What does it mean to be caring?
1. Showing concern for the well being of
others.
2. Using your words and actions to help
someone.
3. Giving of yourself without expecting
anything in return.
What are some words that describe
the character trait of caring?
What are some ways we can
demonstrate caring?
1. Kindness
2. Thoughtful
3. Sharing,
4. Helping
5. Understanding
1. Give to help others in need. For
example: collect canned goods for local
food pantries, donate gently used
clothing and toys, send a card of
encouragement to someone who is sick.
2. Show respect to people, property,
animals, and the environment.
3. Be kind to everyone and do not
exclude others from activities you are
doing.
4. Listen to what others have to say.
5. Be helpful in all situations, at school,
home and in your community.
Why is it important to be caring
towards others?
1. To make someone else feel better.
2. Helps us to feel good about ourselves.
3. We learn compassion for other and to
look beyond our own needs.
4. May inspire others to be caring too.
5. Makes the world a better place
Valuing
WORK IN PAIR
Have students work in pairs. Explain
that you will be starting with partner A
responding to the question and partner
B listening. Then partner B will answer
the same question and partner A will
listen. Have students respond to the
following prompts:
• A time when someone was kind and
caring to me at school was
________________.
• A time when I was kind and caring
to someone at school was
___________________
Reflective Journal
Closing:
Electric Hand Squeeze
Have all the students stand in a circle holding
hands. Start the “electricity” by squeezing the
hand of the person on your right. That person
passes it on by squeezing the hand on her right.
After the pulse has gone through the circle, go
around a second time with a more difficult pattern
(for example, do two short squeezes, or a long
one following by a short one). Kindness—like the
“electricity” in this activity—is infectious
REFLECTION
Describe the most caring thing anyone
has ever done for you. How did that
make you feel? What effect did that
have on you?
