There has been a sharp increase in the number of terrorist attacks in 2013, with almost 10,000 occurring. While the majority of attacks did not claim lives, terrorist groups are now targeting police and security forces more frequently, making it harder to manage the problem. Terrorist incidents have significantly increased in Iraq in 2013, with deaths rising 162% and bombings accounting for the vast majority of deaths and injuries. While large-scale terrorist attacks can have large, unpredictable consequences, individual deaths generally have much smaller effects, and terrorism results in far fewer deaths annually than regular murders.
