3. INTRODUCTION
- The early attribution of infertility to women persisted for
centuries and was often considered a divine punishment
- the only solution to infertility was prayer - to egyptian Isis,
phoenician astarte, Greek aphrodite or Roman venus
- first written documentation on infertility may be found in the
kanhoun papyrus ( oldest Egyptian medical text ), dated to 2200-
1950BC
4. what is IVF ( In-vitro fertilization )
- IVF is a process by which an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the
body: in vitro
- The term in vitro, From the latin meaning in glass, is used .as early
biological experiments involving cultivation to tissues outside the living
organism were carried out in glass containers such as beaker, test
tubes, or petri dishes.
- A colloquial term babies conceived as the result of ivf, is testtube
babies.

-1890 : ENGLAND ( walter heape) cambridge university : reported the first known case
of embryo transplantation in rabbit.
1900 : early 1900’s much reaserch was done on hormone and how they related to
fertility.
-1932:brave new world ( novel ) published by aldous huxley, hyxley restrically
described the techniques of ivf as we know it.
1934 : gregory pincus performed IVF- lie reaserch on rabbits but was fired from
Harvaed due to his controversial research.

- 1935 pincus and enzmann have started onestep earlier with the rabbit, isolation an ovum,
fertilizing it in a doe other than the one which furnished the oocyte and have thus
successfully inaugurated pregnancy in the unmated animal.
-1948 : miriam menken and john rock retrieved more than 800 oocytes from woman during
operations for various conditions. 138 of these oocytes werer exposed to spermatozoa in-
vitro.
- 1959: m.c chang sucessfully conducated IVF in rabbits

-- 1961 : palmer from france described the first retrieval of oocytes by laproscoopy.
- 1965 : robert edward toghether with georgeanna and howard jones at johns hopkins hospital in
the USA attempted to fetrilized human oocytes in vitro.
-1973 : The first ivf pregnancy was reported by the Monash research team of professor carl wood
and john leeton in melbourne, australia. unfortunately, this resulted in early miscarriage.
1975: steptoe and edward published a report on an ectopic pregnancy following transfer of a human
embryo at the late morulae and early balstocyst stage.
1976 : Y. Menezo developed the worlds first B2 culture medium, known as the french medium. this
speciefic medium reflected the follicular, tubal and uterine enviroments of the sheep, rabbits, and
humans.

birth was the result of the collaborative work of patrick steptoe and robert edwards

international scientific community.

performed every year, resulting in over 500,000 deliveries annually.
