Experience as a Computer Scientist
Opening Statement
For this report, the professional interviewed is a computer Engineer/ Web Developer who works for Omnivision Technologies Inc., a corporation that designs and develops advance digital technologies to use in mobile phones, notebooks, security cameras etc. across the United States. The interviewee is the technical manager of the organization and works at its headquarters in Santa Clara, California and has been working in this position for the last five years. This computer science expert provided very useful information about the computer science profession and highlighted a number of challenges common in the career. Further, he provided some recommendations on how the challenges can be dealt with. From the information provided by the interviewee, it is clear that the computer science profession is full of challenges particularly regarding the fast changing technology. The interview revealed several important topics which require further research.
Methodology
The interview was conducted on a skype video call and lasted for slightly above 30 minutes. Before the interview, the interviewee was contacted one hour in advance in order to avoid an ambush. He was also made to understand that the questions which were to be asked during the interview regards the profession, its concerns and challenges. The phone call was recorded during the entire conversation and the information later transcribed and key points extracted. This report is based only on important points and not everything that the interviewee said.

When we think about climate change, the main sources of carbon emissions that come to
mind for most of us are heavy industries like petroleum, mining and transportation.
Rarely do we point the finger at computer technologies.
In fact, many experts view the cyber-world of information and computer technologies
(ICT) as our potential saviour, replacing many of our physical activities with a lower-
carbon virtual alternative.
That is not what our study, recently published in the Journal of Cleaner Production,
suggests.
Having conducted a meticulous and fairly exhaustive inventory of the contribution of ICT
—including devices like PCs, laptops, monitors, smartphones and tablets — and
infrastructure like data centres and communication networks, we found that the relative
contribution of ICT to the total global footprint is expected to grow from about one per cent
in 2007 to 3.5 per cent by 2020 and reaching 14 per cent by 2040.
That’s more than half the relative contribution of the entire transportation sector worldwide.
Another disconcerting finding is that all this extraordinary growth is mostly incremental, essentially
shattering the hope that ICT will help reduce the global carbon footprint by substituting physical
activities with their virtual counterparts.

The impact of smartphones
Perhaps the most surprising result of our study was the disproportionate contribution of smartphones
relative to the overall ICT footprint.
We found that the relative emissions share of smartphones is expected to grow from four per cent in
2010 to 11 per cent by 2020, dwarfing the individual contributions of PCs, laptops and computer
displays.
In absolute values, emissions caused by smartphones will jump from 17 to 125 megatons of CO2
equivalent per year (Mt-CO2e/yr) in that time span, or a 730 per cent growth.
The lion’s share of this footprint (85 to 95 per cent) will be caused not by the use of the device, but
rather by its production. That includes, in addition to the manufacturing energy, the energy for
material mining for gold and the so-called rare-earth elements like yttrium, lanthanium and several
others that today are almost exclusively available only from China.

The information design, regarded as the act of creating usable messages, has a direct application on designing graphic user interfaces. In this regard, it is possible to consider schematic visualization as an option for users to unload cognitively through more stress on the visual characteristics of the interface. This represents a way to apply the Calm Technology paradigm proposed by Mark Weiser. By considering the level of iconicity conveyed into an interface of this nature, the understanding of how schematics works on the interface should be evaluated under a different approach rather than a traditional usability evaluation, for example by doing a communicability test (from the Semiotic Engineering theory). Thus, this paper describes the overall process to design and evaluation of an instant messaging client under these considerations and it also introduces a standpoint for interface design based on the three rhetorical appealing modes.

When we think about climate change, the main sources of carbon emissions that come to
mind for most of us are heavy industries like petroleum, mining and transportation.
Rarely do we point the finger at computer technologies.
In fact, many experts view the cyber-world of information and computer technologies
(ICT) as our potential saviour, replacing many of our physical activities with a lower-
carbon virtual alternative.
That is not what our study, recently published in the Journal of Cleaner Production,
suggests.
Having conducted a meticulous and fairly exhaustive inventory of the contribution of ICT
—including devices like PCs, laptops, monitors, smartphones and tablets — and
infrastructure like data centres and communication networks, we found that the relative
contribution of ICT to the total global footprint is expected to grow from about one per cent
in 2007 to 3.5 per cent by 2020 and reaching 14 per cent by 2040.
That’s more than half the relative contribution of the entire transportation sector worldwide.
Another disconcerting finding is that all this extraordinary growth is mostly incremental, essentially
shattering the hope that ICT will help reduce the global carbon footprint by substituting physical
activities with their virtual counterparts.

The impact of smartphones
Perhaps the most surprising result of our study was the disproportionate contribution of smartphones
relative to the overall ICT footprint.
We found that the relative emissions share of smartphones is expected to grow from four per cent in
2010 to 11 per cent by 2020, dwarfing the individual contributions of PCs, laptops and computer
displays.
In absolute values, emissions caused by smartphones will jump from 17 to 125 megatons of CO2
equivalent per year (Mt-CO2e/yr) in that time span, or a 730 per cent growth.
The lion’s share of this footprint (85 to 95 per cent) will be caused not by the use of the device, but
rather by its production. That includes, in addition to the manufacturing energy, the energy for
material mining for gold and the so-called rare-earth elements like yttrium, lanthanium and several
others that today are almost exclusively available only from China.

The information design, regarded as the act of creating usable messages, has a direct application on designing graphic user interfaces. In this regard, it is possible to consider schematic visualization as an option for users to unload cognitively through more stress on the visual characteristics of the interface. This represents a way to apply the Calm Technology paradigm proposed by Mark Weiser. By considering the level of iconicity conveyed into an interface of this nature, the understanding of how schematics works on the interface should be evaluated under a different approach rather than a traditional usability evaluation, for example by doing a communicability test (from the Semiotic Engineering theory). Thus, this paper describes the overall process to design and evaluation of an instant messaging client under these considerations and it also introduces a standpoint for interface design based on the three rhetorical appealing modes.

Atomic models are useful because they allow us to picture what is inside of an atom, something we will never be able to actually see. We're going to talk about two models, the Bohr model and the Quantum model. While we know that the Quantum model is the correct way to represent atoms, the Bohr model is still useful for a very basic understanding. Think of it as a stick figure sketch of an atom. The parts are all there, its just not quite filled in all of the way.
Bohr Model
The Bohr model of the atom was developed in 1914 by Niels Bohr. In this model, electrons move around the nucleus in fixed, concentric circles. Picture the planets orbiting the Sun. These circles are called energy levels and electrons must have a specific amount of energy to be in each level. The energy levels closest to the nucleus require the least amount of energy. In order for an electron to move further from the nucleus (or move up an energy level) they must gain energy. If they lose energy they fall down to an energy level closer to the nucleus.
Drawing the Bohr model for an atom gives you valuable information about the atom's valence electrons. The

l--are the ones that determine the chemical properties of an atom. In order to draw a Bohr model you must first use the periodic table to tell you the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom. For Bohr models we usually draw what the "average" atom for that element looks like and just round the average atomic mass to a whole number and use that for the mass number.
Steps for Drawing a Bohr Model:
1. Count the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons for that atom.
2. Draw the nucleus. Indicate the correct number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
3. Draw energy levels around the nucleus, starting with the energy level closest to the nucleus. Fill up each energy level before moving on to the next.
Each energy level in a Bohr model can only hold a specific number of electrons, as shown in the table below.

Quantum Model
In 1925 the Quantum model of the atom was developed after it was determined that electrons can behave like a wave and a particle at the same time. In addition, you can't know the precise location of an electron. Instead of traveling in orderly circles around the nucleus, we describe the electrons as existing in a three-dimensional
electron cloud
--a shape surrounding the nucleus. You will learn more about the Quantum model in chemistry.

Identify three (3) ways you believe digital technology can affect society. 3. Address the following topics from your text and other sources featured thus far in this course: a. Sensors i.
