WHY WE USE LAB ANIMALS
• Smaller in size need a minimum space and
maintenance is less.
• Short lifespan.
• Organ and body system similar to human
and other animals.
• Cost of production and maintenance is less.
• Used in microbiological and virological
research.
• Environment easily controllable keep
experimental variables to minimum.
IMPORTANCE OF LABORATORY
ANIMALS
• Laboratory animals are used mainly in
fundamental biological research,applied
Medical Research and diagnosis.
• Important discipline using laboratory animals
are physiology, Pharmacology, toxicology
,experimental surgery, microbiology,
Pathology ,bio assay of vaccine drugs and
infusion fluids.
• In India more than 20 lakh animals used in
research biomedical and veterinary science
• Usage of this animal in research in
production of biological material has given
sufficient information regarding the
biological process of human and other
animal
• Production of different biological vaccine.
• Pharmaceuticals ,food, drugs and cosmetic
industries also uses for efficiency safety and
toxicity testing.
• Animals are used to test the effect of drug
before their introduction in clinical trial.
• TOXICOLOGICAL STUDIES
• Rats, beagles, dogs and primates used .
• TEACHING
• Study function of organ.
• Response of organ or whole system to
drugs.
• Evolving Surgical technique.
• Demonstrate experimental surgery .
Mice
• Acute toxicity
• Insulin Studies
• Analgesic Test.
• Genetic and cancer research.
• Teratogenicity
• Gene Screening of chemotherapeutics.
Uses of Different Laboratory Animals
RAT
• Psychopharmacological Studies.
• Assay of hormone.
• Gastric acid secretion.
• Acute and chronic toxicities.
• Neonatal studies.
• Teratogenicity and carcinogenicity
GUINEA PIG
• Bronchodilator studies.
• Bio assey of drugs like digitalis and
histamine.
• Experiment on o2 consumption.
• Local analgesic.
• Hearing experiments .
• Infectious diseases like tuberculosis.
• Respiratory tract studies.
HAMSTER
• Virology.
• Cancer research.
• Nutrition.
• Reproductive physiology.
• Toxicity studies.
• Pharmacology- cancer/ anticancer research.
RABBIT
• Insulin and hypoglycaemic studies.
• Capillary permeability studies.
• Serological works.
• Dermal toxicities.
• Teratogenicity.
Transgenic Animals
• Transgenic animals are the animals whose
genome has been altered by transfer of a
gene or genes from another species or
breed
• These are Genetically Modified animal used
for variety of purpose that is producing
drug,increasing resistance to diseases.
• Produced for specific economic traits like
medicine, agricultural and industry.
Uses of Transgenic Animals
1. Normal physiology and development
2. Study of diseases
3. Chemical safety testing
4. Biological Products
5. Vaccine Safety
6. Agricultural
Normal Physiology and Development
• Gene regulation ,function of body development.
• Study complex factor involved in growth i.e
insulin like growth factor.
• By introducing gene from other species that
alter the expression of this factor, either by
enhancing or suppressing its production.
• Study of Diseases
• To improve understanding the role of genes in
development of disease.
Study of diseases
• Development of diseases model to show
symptoms of a disease, so that cause and
treatment can be studied more easily.
• To improve understanding the role of gene in
the development of disease.
• Transgenic models developed for cancer
,cystic fibrosis,Alzheimer’s disease.
Chemical safety Testing
• Chemicals that are used as drug to treat
illness are tested in animlas to see if harmful
side effect result also known as Safety or
Toxicity testing.
•Vaccine Safety
• Transgenic mice are developed for use in
testing the Safety of vaccine before they
given to human/animals.
Agricultural
• Transgenic farm animals can be developed to
increase production.
• For example, TGN cows that produce more
milk
• Sheep for more wool
• Beef animlas for more flesh.
• Poultry for more eggs/meat.
THANK YOU…
