BENEFITS OF ART IN TEACHING AND
LEARNING
 Art can be a powerful tool in the teaching and learning process, offering numerous
benefits to students. There are many benefits but I would like to talk about Some of
the key advantages of incorporating art into the Education which includes;
 It enhances creativity and imagination
 It boosts critical thinking skill
 Encourages self-expression and communication
 Promote cultural awareness and understanding
 Build confidence and self-esteem
 Enhances memory retention
 Supports interdisciplinary learning
 Develop fine motor skills
 Improves mental health and well-being
It enhances creativity and imagination
Art encourages learners to think outside the box, fostering their creativity and
imagination. Through artistic expression, learners can explore different
perspectives and develop innovative solutions to a problem. For example, when a
student is learning to play a musical instrument, they are not just learning to
read music, but they also develop their creative skills. This skill can benefit
learners in other subjects, such as science and mathematics where innovative
thinking is crucial.
Boosts critical thinking skills
Art requires learners to think analytically and critically. By analyzing artwork and
creating their own, learners learn to interpret, evaluate and make connections
between ideas and concepts.
Encourages self-expression and
communication
Art offers non-verbal means of self-expression, allowing learners to communicate
their thoughts, feelings and experiences. This can be particularly beneficial to
learners who struggle with verbal communication or find it difficult to express
themselves in traditional academic subjects. For example, when a learner is
learning to draw or paint, they are learning to express themselves visually. This
skill can be applied in other areas of life, such as speaking or writing.
Promote cultural awareness,
understanding and empathy
It says that art provides a window into different cultures, traditions and
perspectives. By exploring diverse artistic styles and cultural artifacts, learners
gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of various societies, fostering
empathy and tolerance. For example, when a student is learning about
traditional dance forms from different parts of the world, they are learning
about the culture and history behind those dance forms. This understanding can
help to promote cultural sensitivity and respect.
Builds confidence and self esteem
It provides a medium for learners to showcase their unique talents and abilities.
Seeing their artwork displayed or receiving positive feedback from their peers or
teachers can boost their confidence and self-esteem, encouraging them to
further explore their artistic potential.
Art enhances memory retention
The visual nature of art can aid in memory retention. Creating visual
representations or using visual aids can help learners to recall information more
effectively, making learning more memorable and engaging.
Art supports interdisciplinary learning
Art can be integrated into various subjects, such as science, history, literature
and mathematics, allowing for interdisciplinary learning. For example, learners
can create art inspired by scientific principles or historical events, reinforcing
their understanding of the subjects while developing their artistic skills.
Develops fine motor skills
Engaging art activities such as drawing, painting and sculpting helps learners
develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. These skills are transferable
and can benefit learners in their academic areas that require precision and
manual dexterity.
Improves mental health and well-being
Art education can also improve mental health and well-being. It has therapeutic
benefits and can help to reduce stress and enxiety. For example, when a student
is learning to play a musical instrument, they are engaging in a relaxing and
enjoyable activity that can help to reduce stress levels.
Recomendations
I would highly recommend teachers to engage art as one of the subjects taught
at their schools. Remember every school and its leaners are unique, so its
important to tailor the art curriculum to suit their needs and interests. The
inclusion of art in schools is vital as it offers a wide range of benefits. Art
education enriches student’s lives and equip them with valuable skills necessary
for personal and professional growth in today’s diverse world.
