Art is the expression of human creative skill and imagination, in visual form such as
painting or sculpture, in auditory form and performing art work expressing the
author’s imaginative powers.
Acc. to Rabindranath Tagore, “Art is the expression of human experiences”.
Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature, creation and
appreciation of art, beauty and good taste. It is derived from Greek word,
“aisthetikos”, meaning of sense perception.
Acc. to Britannica, “Aesthetics means the philosophical study of beauty and taste”

art a person is
able to
appreciate and
criticize a work
of art.
We can motivate
the learning

students and
make the
understanding
level higher by
correlating the
two or more
subjects with
each other. This
will save the time
of the teacher as
he can teach two
subjects in one
period

correlated with
other subjects,
two or more
subjects may be
taught
collectively and
the time of both
teacher and the
students can be
saved.
Secondly when
the topic is
taught with
audio-visual
aids, students
take more
interest and
they learn more
in less time.
Art itself
depends on
creativity. It
also gives
opportunity to
create new
things. It
develops
creative
emotions in the
minds of the
children. For
example, in a
class if we give
a topic to the
students to
make a poster
on drug
addiction, no
two ideas will
be the same.
Art is the basis
of all audio-
visual aids.
Because only
with the help of
art (drawing)
we can draw
and paint a
picture or we
can make a
model. These
audio-visual
aids help the
students to
clear those
facts and
concepts which
are not clear to
them.
It develops
imagination
power, learning
power,
observation
power and
quality of
comparison. All
these powers
are very much
useful for a
person in his
life. When a
person
develops with
these mental
developments,
he tries to use it
with his hands.

in the nature he
tries to keep it in

Keats says, “A
thing of beauty
is joy forever”.
To make this joy
forever, it is very
essential to
memorize that
scene. Then
only the
memory of a
thing will live
forever in his
mind if he tries
to memorize it.
It is the best
way to express
one’s views ,
ideas, emotions
and expression.
It gives
pleasure and
relaxes the
man’s mind. It
helps
economically
as a man can
earn his living
by adopting art
as a profession.
It develops in a
person all the
moral qualities
e.g. patience,
endurance,

anyone who is
willing to make
a painting, a
sketch, a
portrait, a still
life or a
composition, he
has to observe
the
surroundings
and
environment to
get the idea for
his drawing or
sketching.

Aims and Objectives of Arts in Education
1) Increased Engagement
Unlike textbook learning, which can get monotonous and routine, art in
education engages learners in new ways. Whether they are observing a drawing
or creating one of their own, they required to be fully immersed in the activity.
2) Improved Quality of Learning
As the children are more engaged, it has a positive impact on the quality of
learning. Because of greater participation, the learner’s remain in the minds of
the children long after they exit the classroom.
3) Boost Creativity
To succeed in today’s times, creativity is must have skill. Not all kids are inclined
towards art. For those who are not interested in art, integration of art into
learning can be a good introduction to creativity.
4) Increased Confidence
Creating a piece of art, even if it’s simple drawing, gives a sense of fulfilment
and achievement. Thus integrating art into learning reduces the fear of failure
among kids and encourages them to take more risks.

5) Development of Motor skills
Simple things like holding a paint brush and scribbling with crayon in classroom
are an important element to developing a child’s fine motor skills. Around age 4,
children may be able to draw a square and begin cutting straight lines with
scissors.
6) Enhance Visual Learning
Drawing, painting and sculpting help[ to develop visual spatial skills among
students. Art in education teaches students how to interpret, criticize and use
visual information.
7) Promotes Decision Making
Arts strengthen problem solving and critical thinking skills. How do I express this
feeling through my dance? How should I play this character?
8) Teach Perseverance
After practicing hard to do, students learn that hard work and perseverance pays
off. This mind set will certainly matter as they grow, esp. during their careers.

As you persevere through painting or singing or learning a part in a play, focus is
imperative. And certainly focus is vital for studying and learning in class.

Many of the arts such as band, choir and theatre, require kids to work
together. They must share responsibility and compromise to achieve their
common goals.

Just like collaboration, kids in the art learn that they are accountable for their
contributions to the group. Mistakes are the part of life, and learning to accept
them, fix them and move on will serve kids well as they grow older.

Students pick up important life skills from art in education, such as better
memory, enhanced understanding and an ability to communicate symbolically.
13)Cognitive Stimulation
Art in education has been linked to advanced cognitive development in
children. In a 1998 report, “young Children and the Arts: making creative
connections”, researchers found that art in education can contribute
significantly to a child’s cognitive, language and motor skills.

Art is the expression of human creative skill and imagination, in visual form such as painting or sculpture, in auditory form and performing art work expressing the author’s imaginative powers. Acc. to Rabindranath Tagore, “Art is the expression of human experiences”. Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature, creation and appreciation of art, beauty and good taste. It is derived from Greek word, “aisthetikos”, meaning of sense perception. Acc. to Britannica, “Aesthetics means the philosophical study of beauty and taste” Meaning Of Art & Aesthetics 3

Makes Knowledge Interesting` Practical & Manual training Develops Aesthetics Sense Correlation with other Subjects When we add a visual form with any theoretical subject or topic, it becomes very interesting. If we show the pictures of a story to the children it will have more effect on them. With pictorial representation, learning power will increase. On the basis of art, this practical ability can be developed in the students. Practical work and skill is very much important in the field of education. We can develop the hidden talent of the students with the help of this skill. Art helps in the aesthetic development of a person and along with aesthetic sense, self expression and the Rasa (feeling of beauty) is also developed. With the help of art a person is able to appreciate and criticize a work of art. We can motivate the learning power of the students and make the understanding level higher by correlating the two or more subjects with each other. This will save the time of the teacher as he can teach two subjects in one period Significance of Art & Aesthetics at the secondary level of School Education 4
  • 5. When art is correlated with other subjects, two or more subjects may be taught collectively and the time of both teacher and the students can be saved. Secondly when the topic is taught with audio-visual aids, students take more interest and they learn more in less time. Art itself depends on creativity. It also gives opportunity to create new things. It develops creative emotions in the minds of the children. For example, in a class if we give a topic to the students to make a poster on drug addiction, no two ideas will be the same. Art is the basis of all audio- visual aids. Because only with the help of art (drawing) we can draw and paint a picture or we can make a model. These audio-visual aids help the students to clear those facts and concepts which are not clear to them. It develops imagination power, learning power, observation power and quality of comparison. All these powers are very much useful for a person in his life. When a person develops with these mental developments, he tries to use it with his hands. Without concentration there will be no imagination and without imagination we will not be able to create a thing and we cannot apply it in our work of art. When an artist looks at a scene in the nature he tries to keep it in his mind. As Keats says, “A thing of beauty is joy forever”. To make this joy forever, it is very essential to memorize that scene. Then only the memory of a thing will live forever in his mind if he tries to memorize it. It is the best way to express one’s views , ideas, emotions and expression. It gives pleasure and relaxes the man’s mind. It helps economically as a man can earn his living by adopting art as a profession. It develops in a person all the moral qualities e.g. patience, endurance, First of all anyone who is willing to make a painting, a sketch, a portrait, a still life or a composition, he has to observe the surroundings and environment to get the idea for his drawing or sketching. In the realm of art, the manual work is of great importance but in society it was seen as a degraded job. Art makes the person lenient. It creates in a persona sense of satisfaction. He develops the qualities of patience, because he do his work with great ease and comfort. Art is a skill and the applied arts need a great intellect. To create pleasing forms, like pottery, manual works like embroidery etc. all need a great intellect. Whether they are observing a drawing or creating one of their own, they required to be fully immersed in the activity. 2) Improved Quality of Learning As the children are more engaged, it has a positive impact on the quality of learning. Because of greater participation, the learner’s remain in the minds of the children long after they exit the classroom. 3) Boost Creativity To succeed in today’s times, creativity is must have skill. Not all kids are inclined towards art. For those who are not interested in art, integration of art into learning can be a good introduction to creativity. 4) Increased Confidence Creating a piece of art, even if it’s simple drawing, gives a sense of fulfilment and achievement. Thus integrating art into learning reduces the fear of failure among kids and encourages them to take more risks. 8
