Culture of Indonesia in General.
The culture of Indonesia has took its current shape molded by several influences that have been prevalent in the land, as a result of the long process of interaction and acculturation between original indigenous customs and a multitude of foreign influences. Nestled between the ancient sea trading routes between Far East and Middle East, Indonesian culture, too a large extent has imbibed much of its daily practices and art forms from the Hindu, Buddhist, Confucianism and Islamic influences. These connections are clearly evident mostly in its many trading cities.
The kaleidoscopic cultural hue of Indonesia is largely cosmopolitan and need to be distinguished from the original. The complex nature of this culture can be easily gazed by various lines of faiths adopted by people here, for example: Agama Hindu Dharma, a denomination of Hinduism is now practiced by 93% of Balinese. Other examples are the fusion of Islam with Hindu in Javanese Abangan belief, the fusion of Hinduism, Buddhism and animism in Budha, the fusion of Hinduism and animism in Kaharingan, and many others.
With the diverse influences, shaping up the perspective of the Indonesian people, their lifestyle and values, the impact of the cultural fusion is also noticeable in Indonesian art forms. For instances, wayang- a traditional form of theatre show performed with puppets was used to spread Hinduism and Islam among villagers in Java. Similarly, in various Javanese and Balinese dances, often stories about old Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms are told. In Sumatra, especially in its Minangkabau and Aceh regions, one can see direct architectural inspiration from the Islamic art forms and architectures.
As far as the westernization of culture of Indonesia is concerned, an imprint of it though cannot be ruled out, but it is mostly limited to modern entertainment, such as television shows, movies and songs. One of the major influences in this sphere are the Bollywood songs and movies.
1. IMPACTS OF BACSON-HOABINH, DONGSON AND INDIAN CULTURE TO INDONESIAN EARLY CULTURE<br />Indonesia’s culture is a mix of lots of cultures, including bacson-hoabinh, Dongson and Indian culture. Bacson-hoabinh and dongson culture is a culture that comes from Vietnam.<br />The bacson-hoabinh culture comes from the pre-historic people of Vietnam that abandoned its nomadic life to settle in the Red River valley.<br />The Dongson culture came from the Red River valley and is centered in Ma River. It is the formation of the period of the Vietnamese nation. The Dong Son culture exerted great influence on its neighbor regions, like Laos, Thailand and Indonesia.<br />For the Indian culture of course come from the country itself, India. Their culture is not a mixed of other cultures because India is one of the oldest civilizations on Earth.<br />Things that the Bacson-hoabinh culture has brought to Indonesia are the hand axes, which are made with bone and horn. They also bring a material called flakes, which are used to cut through animal skins, flesh, etc. Like Dongson culture, they also affect the way Indonesian people farm, which I’ll explain in the Dongson culture influence part.<br />For Dongson, the main culture that they brought to Indonesia is bronze culture. They also influenced the way Indonesian people farm; people carrying plows, buffaloes and even working the fields and farmers milling rice with the hand pestles. They also involved in the design of Keris knife and the Moko drums of Alor, Indonesia.<br />Last not least, the Indian culture has brought quiet a lot of things to Indonesia. Mostly they located in Bali. The Indian culture has brought Hinduism and Buddhism in Indonesia. They also brought the culture of making statues, sculptures, etc, such as The Prambanan and Borobudur temple in Yogyakarta, and the Uluwatu temple in Bali. They also affect the Indonesian cuisine of curry and the spreading of Indo-Iranian language (Sansekerta), which is used by Indonesian people long time ago.<br />
