IMMIGRATION&CULTURAL DIFFUSION IN KERALA
INTRODUCTION
Human migration is the movement by people from one place
to another with the intention of settling temporarily or
permanently in the new location. When people travel or
migrate from one to another, they often hiring their custom
with them and it leads to cultural diffusion. Cultural diffusion is
a process by which cultural traits are spread from one society
to another.
SCOPE
Migration patterns and their socio-
economic impact have significantly
influenced the culture and political process
in Kerala. So it is imperative and
interesting to find out the after effect of
immigration and cultural diffusion.
Objectives of the study
General objective
To understand the changes in the culture of
Kerala by way of inflow of outside labor to
the state.
Specific objectives
 To find the relevant factor which leads to the immigration of
other state workers to Kerala.
 In which way the immigration of other state workers affect
Kerala’s culture.
 To understand the factors in Kerala which increase the
demand of outside labors.
 To find out the contribution of immigrants in our state
development.
 To evaluate the negative impacts of immigrants in Kerala.
 To analyze the employable opportunities of Malayalies with
respect to increasing competition among migrant labors
Universe
Universe means the total population
available for the study. In this study, the
universe constitutes all the immigrant
employees working in Idukki (Kerala).
Sample
Sample means a representation of the whole
universe by a small population.
Sample size
The number of sample units selected from the total
population is called sample size. Sample size selected
for this study is 60.
Major findings of the study
 Almost 87% people agree that migrant labours influence the culture
of Kerala.
 Reasons for immigration of workers.
 Low wage
 Lack of Malayalies in the construction field
 Increasing job opportunities in Kerala as compared to other states
 After effects of migration
 Migrant labours create pollution to our natural ecosystem (81%).
 Decreasing job opportunities of Malayalies (75%).
 It creates competition and increases working time.
 Criminal offences are increasing (90%).
 Usage of drug material (87).
 64% people said that in future Kerala will become the Gulf of
immigrants.
 53% people says that our mother tongue is influenced by them.
 Positive impacts
 Migrants contribute more in the field of construction site (81%).
 35% people suggests that they increases Kerala’s GDP.
 Migration can affect Kerala’s culture. So a control over
migration is an important thing.
 Today criminal offence from migrant labours are increasing. So
a great control over them is essential.
 Almost all construction field is filled with migrants. So in future
we are facing a big crises in job field. Therefore we must
understand the value of each and every job.
 Contribution from migrants is an important thing. So optimum
utilise the benefit from migrants
