Editor's Notes
- On my behalf and behalf of IBBT I would like to welcome you again at this iMinds edition. We have a full schedule ahead of us and are running late already so without further ado I am going to start wit my presentation. As you heard from the minister, this is an important year for IBBT. We are entering a next phase of our life and have spent most of this year laying out the plans for that.
- I originally put together a straightforwardpresentation based on our strategic plan but then I thought the better of it because you might as well read It then and save us all 45 minutes of precious time (boekje tone)Plan B was to try to link it to my personal lifeline. I consider myself lucky to have lived several lives and most of what ends up in my presentations is the result of these experiences so we put together some kind of hybrid where we link this to the strategic plan. Bear with me. It is an experiment.
- 1985, I graduate from University and am convinced by my professor to go into research. Easily impressionable I go for it and end up doing research in artificial intelligence. At university all I have is an IBM PC with 640K of RAM to do this but my professor is ahead of his time and a strong believer in cooperation with industry. I end up at Siemens Corporation, who have money to pay for an Apollo Workstation, Apollo later got acquired by HP, which seem to have a bit of an identity crisis themselves now.
- So, if I would fast forward for a second to 2011, and somehow ended up running a research institute in ICT (more about how I got here I will come to later) we need to ask ourselves the question, to paraphrase the Talking Heads: how dit we get there. And more importantly what are we to do.
- The strategy is defined by three goals which at first sight might seem pretty obvious.
