The Texas Horned Lizard Essay
The Texas horned lizard, Phrynosoma cornutum, is a species in the lizard family,
Phrynosomatidae, which has ten genera and a diverse group of over 125 different species
(Hammerson 2007; Cossel Jr. 1997). Lizards in this family can be found in Mexico, Panama,
most areas of the United States and parts of Canada (Heying 2003). Phrynosomatids range in a
variety of forms, but are most commonly distinguished by their small size (less than 10 cm long),
rough and keeled scales, spikes on their bodies, and the fusion of the sides of their teeth to the
sides of their inner jawbones, known as pleurodont teeth (Heying 2003). The thirteen species in the
horned lizardgenus, Phrynosoma, can be identified more specifically by their flattened bodies...

It has developed highly efficient mechanisms for collecting water on the ground and moisture in the
air and transporting it across its skin to its mouth (Map 2010). The Texas horned lizardhas hinged
scales, which are interconnected to a system of tubular canals located in the thin keratin layer of
its skin (Sherbrooke et al 2007). When water or moisture comes into contact with the its scales,
capillary forces pull water into the lizard s tubular canals, which is then transported to the mouth
for consumption (Sherbrooke et al 2007). The lizard s hinged scales have also adapted a greater
efficiency of absorbing water by increasing their surface area, which allows for more water to be
absorbed and transported at once (Sherbrooke et al 2007). Furthermore, the lizard has adapted a
buccal pumping mechanism in its mouth, which allows it to pump a constant flow of water into its
mouth to drink (Map 2010; Sherbrooke et al 2007). It has modified structures around its mouth
that, combined with certain tongue and jaw movements, allows it to lower the water pressure and
pull a constant flow of water through its tubular canals and directly into its mouth (Map 2010;
Sherbrooke et al 2007). The Texas horned lizardalso exhibits behavioral adaptations that have
increased its water absorbing efficiency. To help increase the capture of water from its scales, the
lizard lowers its head and body to the ground and sticks out its legs to increase the surface area of
its body in

Symbolism In In Her Secret Heart By Miss Mijares
Being a person who is used to being in control, she is in complete confusion on how to handle
her current situation. Denial helps her cope and focus on what she must do in order to survive her
situation. Then again, it also causes her to ignore problems for which there are solutions if dealt
with. Miss Mijares is uncertain if she is ready to begin a new phase in her stationary life.
The third symbolism is Miss Mijares dream of being lost. This suggests that she thinks that she has
lost her primary dreams as a woman. The dream of finding a husband and being a good wife
vanished along all the interviews she has done. The thought of bearing children and becoming a
mother remained hidden. Because of her constant denial, she cannot identify ... Show more content

This was shown in the lines from the story: In her secret heart, Miss Mijares young dreams
fluttered faintly to life, seeming monstrous in the rain, near this man seeming monstrous but
sweet overwhelming (Tuvera 58) She thinks it is monstrous to have feelings for the man
because she is a white collared worker and he is a carpenter. Society will judge their relationship.
It is unlikely that this will be accepted by people since this normally does not happen in the
community. She is expected to be with someone of the same class. She is scared that she will be
a total derision to her friends and her family. But in the end, her head got in sync of her deeper
heart s intent. She expresses her feelings and desires for the carpenter as she accepts his apology
and goes with him, sharing the same passion as her through the storm. Within the storm, the
sadness of Miss Mijares life is cleansed and a rebirth happens in her life. She now finds true
happiness and can achieve her dreams as a woman. She is willing to enjoy the ride and see the
beauty in this new experience. She has accepted this new journey in her life, a journey more
amazing than she can ever imagine. It may lead her to unexpected places, but she has someone
right beside her to accompany her and to get through with them all. Stepping through disaster is a
way to a new beginning. She knows that as old as she is now, she can still learn new things in her
life, if she is willing to be a beginner. Through her dissatisfaction as a great starting point, she had
the power, strength and energy for change to push through. With this change, it was not only a new
chapter in her life, but a beginning of a new

Reporting Sexual Assault In The United States Military
The Navy was ranked second regarding Navy servicewomen and the second ranked for the
servicemen was the Marines. In 2014, The Marine Corps reported the highest percentage of assaults
against women, with 7.9 percent reporting having endured an assault, while the Navy had the
highest for men, 1.5 percent. The percent of troops reporting a sexual assaultin the other services
among women were 4.7 percent of Army soldiers, 6.5 percent of Navy sailors, 2.9 percent of Air
Force airmen and 3.0 percent of Coast Guardsmen. The percentage of male troops reporting a

of Hasbro s main core values which some are : Community, Innovation, Fun and Diversity
amongst others , if I myself had to be responsible for the marketing of Hasbro and was in charge
to come with new ideas I would come up with a Monopoly Theme Park . What else could be
better and more successful than a theme park for a company like Hasbro?
Having the capital to invest and wait for a long term profit, Hasbro in my opinion is losing out
on an idea like this. If Again I had to be in charge the theme park would include Kiddie Rides to
Adult Thrill Rides, Would also include a life size monopoly where people can gather together as
communities and enjoy a day out. Organising also competitions for people to come up with new
ideas for different monopolies from around the world and the winner will get a monopoly made
to his name. Why not have a Studio Booth for people to get photographs and make their own
family monopoly? Nan s house could be the least valued property while Uncle Mat s Villa is the
highest! Why not challenge people on a short version of monopoly and see who will be able to play
monopoly whilst going on a ride ?

Australian Aborigines and their Crisis
Australia s Aborigines are often hailed as the world s longest surviving culture, easily dating back
60,000 years, existing long before many ancient societies such as the Greeks and Romans. Since
they are such an old culture many people wonder how they were able to remain in existence for so
long while of culture perished around them. The answer can be found in their adaptive nature;
having such a close bound with the land around them, taught the aboriginals the importance of
change and adapting (Australia.gov.au). While it might be debatable that Australia s natives are the
longest surviving culture, there is no doubt that the Aborigines animistic religion is the oldest
existing. Their religion is ripe with multiple different gods, often represented in the forms of
animals or notable landscape features. There is no one central god, instead many deities were
spread across the continent of Australia, each spirit fulfilling their role in the world. Creation
beings were involved in the creation of the world, ancestral beings taught humans how to hunt and
make weapons, totemic beings were the original form of animals. Being a culture that places high
emphasize on their religion, many of the dot art, a form of painting or drawing that involves
creating hundreds of small dots to create the overall picture, is often found in caves or the sides of
rocks, the some

Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) By Ebtsam Seteh Abstract Volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere have been determined to be a human risk factor in urban,
suburban, and industrial environments. This study aims to characterize the distribution and
concentrations of ambient air toxics in Memphis and identify major sources of VOCs. During
four seasons in 2014, about 530 ambient air samples have been collected in various locations in
Memphis and surrounding areas for the analysis of VOCs with the TO 15 method. GC MS was

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Ambient air in urban, rural, and industrial areas contains an
array of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They spread in the air as gases from some solids or
liquid materials. Society and environment are directly healthy affected in short and long term by
VOCs at trace level concentrations (2). Air pollutants toxic are class of chemicals that may
consider health problems in a significant way. There are many chemical pollutants released into the
ambient air from various sources, such as power plants, and spraying pesticides. There are two
types of air pollutants that are primary pollutants, which are emitted directly into the air from
pollution sources, and secondary pollutants, which are from primary pollutants, but after they
passing from many of the chemical changes in the atmosphere (12). The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has compiled a list of 187 hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). There are 30 HAPs

Year-Round Baseball Argumentative Essay
Baseball has been played by millions of people all over the world. The sport has been a staple of
entertainment on radio and tv for many years. And just in the last few decades there has been a
huge spike in arm injuries, and a lot of them have been in younger players. Year round baseball is
number one, is what Dr. Andrews said about Tommy John surgery(Snyder). What year round
baseballmeans is that players play baseball in the fall and winter months, this never happened in
years before. Also kids are now being allowed times for their arms to rest and heal. Year round
baseball should definitely be regulated one reason is the increasing amount of arm injuries in
younger kids, Also the kids may burn out mentally and not want to play the sport anymore, they
may just one day say they do not want to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over the course of baseballs long existence it has been a very laid back sport with only minor
injuries. But in the last decade or so the injuries have been popping up all over. Definitely the
most common one being the tearing of the ucl tendon in the arm. This injury takes time to tear
and it usually starts to hurt before the ligament actually snaps. Most commonly, there is a gradual
onset of elbow pain due to repetitive stresses on the ligament (Hopkins Medicine). But there are
cases where thee injury can be sudden and happen on one pitch. There have been more and more
of these injuries but the biggest shock is the amount of young kids dealing with pain in their
elbows. This is an effect of year round baseball, because the kids and teens are not getting their
proper rest in between pitch outings. Also their coaches could be pushing them to pitch more
innings and throw more pitches. But not only are young people getting these injuries older pros are
also. There has been a substantial increase in

The idea of a regal Emperor and you may picture the Emperor in his flowing, ornate robes actually
kneeling before a common woman is an image that sets the tone of superiority. The reader can see
the ample nation begging for her attention and see her point at one then turn away from the rest.
Like Stone is a concrete image of the poet herself shutting out all that she does not desire.
Yet another analysis of the images in The Soul selects her own Society are that they create a
theme analogous to God and the universe. The Soul as the human being sees herself as god like,
she creates a universe of her own choosing by creating a defined space with her carefully chosen
words Door , Gate which keep the external world out. Whereas God has created Heaven for His
personal space, the poet s haven is not grand, but simple low Gate , her Mat . The poet is the
common man who becomes superior through linguistic word play. The suggestion of superiority as
stated above infer that the soul has given herself heavenly qualities. Each word has been carefully
chosen by Dickinson to convey her message.
The search for the exact word is lauded in Dickinson s poem I dwell in Possibility . In this poem
she speculates on the craft of poetry. The poet loves words and delights in the vast number of
words that she has to choose from. She sees poetry as having infinite Possibility , whereas prose is

Susan B Anthony In The Progressive Era
The Progressive Era was full of people wanting to change their surroundings and laws in life. There
were abolitionists, women s rights activists, education reformists, and many other titles that people
took to change the inhumane lives that they were being lead by. One woman in particular, Susan B.
Anthony, took on more than just one of these titles. She took on much more than most others would
or could have.
Anthony was born in February of 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. She was raised in a
Quaker family with activist traditions. Having been brought up in this kind of household she
learned at a young age what was moral and had a keen sense of justice.
Growing up in a Quaker household Anthony was taught that drinking liquor was sinful.

The legislature refused as most of the 28,000 signatures were those of women and children. This act
on the State legislatures part led to Anthony and Stanton s movement of women s suffrage.
Another one of Susan B. Anthony s greatest impacts is her importance in women s suffrage. After
her and Stanton s petition for more laws on limiting the sales of alcohol was declined because the
amount of women s signatures was greater than the amount of men s
Anthony became greatly infuriated on the point that woman had no say in the government. In
1866, Stanton and Anthony founded the American Equal Rights Association and started printing a
newspaper in Rochester, The Revolution, in 1868. In 1869 the suffrage movement split, with
Anthony and Stanton s National Association continuing to campaign for a constitutional
amendment, and the American Woman Suffrage Association adopting a strategy of getting the vote
for women on a stateВbyВstate basis. Wyoming became the first territory to give women the vote
in 1869. In the 1870 s Anthony campaigned vigorously for women s right to vote, and

Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead Analysis
In Tom Stoppard s play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, we see Ros and Guil adventure
through their confused yet contented lives as events occur around them that seal their fate. In
hindsight, their presence and lives seem rather pointless. The Tragedy of Hamlet could have
functioned fine without them, so why are they there and why are they not a single character? Most
readers could interpret that they each embody some concept. This literature review will attempt to
investigate the symbolism of the story and how other authors perceive it. When analyzing these
characters, one cannot help but wonder what Shakespeare had in mind for them. American
Historian, Preserved Smith, delves into a few of Shakespeare s influences.
He and many contemporaries matriculated at Wittenberg. Shakespeare then may have chosen
Wittenberg simply on account of its fame. It is interesting to note, however, that Hamlet s
Wittenberg friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, may actually have been drawn from the life, as
there were men of this name at the university. A Holger Rosencrantz who studied at Wittenberg in
the years 1592 95 was later attached to the Danish embassy in London. A Frederick Rosencrantz,
son of another Holger Rosencrantz and of Karen Gyldenstjerne, matriculated in December, 1586.5

Genealogy Is The Study Of One s Ancestry And Genetic History
Genealogy is the study of one s ancestry and genetic history. It helps us appreciate our ancestor s
lives, which may have been seemingly insignificant at the time. Genealogy helps us understand our
habits and physical features. It also explains the unique genetic variations casted within us, and
depicts a picture of how the culture we practice today came to be, it is not just history of events but
our biological history that shaped us. Many Bangladeshi origin people both in Bangladesh and
those abroad identify themselves as full or pure Bengali. Which means that their Bengali root goes
back many generations back, but many who identify themselves as pure or full Bengali ethnically
don t usually think about their genetic roots that go deeper into just language and culture. Many of
these ethnic Bengalis conclude that their great great grandparents originated from Indiaas that whole
geographic area include modern day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. But, going back
even further things things get really complicated as we start to see all the different genes that
contributed to the Bengalis today. Historically the Indian subcontinent was one big land and people
settled wherever it was convenient for trades and had water access. Because of the many rivers and
ocean, this region had many settlements and therefore exposed to many different races and
variations of races. This made the whole Indian sub continent population really diverse in terms of
race and ethnicity. At

Tale Of An Hour By John Kasmer Analysis
As the tale starts out, she was under the oppressive control of her husband and did not have a
personality of her own. What John wanted, John got, and that was the way it had always been.
The narrator was ensnared under her husband s crude ideals, with no say in the matter, and
having an imagination as well as a creative thought process was the polar opposite of her
significant other. Kasmer claims that this lifestyle and sense of servitude prevented the protagonist
from being able to try to express her feelings and voice her opinions to her husband (Kasmer 7). It
discouraged her from being a unique individual. As you read the tale, her language and tone reflect
this; constantly referring to herself as one which creates an eerie ...echo of anonymity... (Golden
195). She has fallen into the typical stereotype as being intellectually inferior to a 19th century male.

Whenever she voices a concern, he merely plays it off as nothing important. For instance, when she
mentioned something was queer about the house, John simply says, ...was a draught, and [to] shut
the window (Gilman 469) Another example of the spouse not giving her opinion a second thought
was when the narrator wanted to do the rest cure in another room of the summer mansion that was
much prettier and welcoming than the nursery (Gilman 470). In spite of the wife s request, the
husband holds firm to his decision and sends her upstairs. The barred windows in the nursery
represents the narrator s captivity not only her husband, but by society s overwhelming oppression
towards women while the nursery represents what society thinks about how to treat a woman; they
are to be treated like mere children that need constant supervision since they cannot think for
themselves (MacPike 287).

Neocolonialism During the Porfiriato
Necolonialism During the Porfiriato
In the early sixteenth century, Spain conquered Mexico and turned it into one of their most
lucrative colonies. In the search for land, labor and natural resources, Spain found everything they
were looking for in Mexico. During the colonial period, Mexico was simply another kingdom of
the vast Spanish Empire. As Spain largely benefited, the indigenous civilizations of Mexico were
ravaged and left to be entirely dependent on their foreign counterpart. It wasn t until the
independence movement in the early nineteenth century that Mexico seemed to have some hope of
being released from the hands of imperialism. Unfortunately, following independence, Mexico
suffered from a half a century of economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he was right, the economic boom came with severe consequences that left Mexico
largely dependent on the United States. Mexico s economy boomed during the thirty year
presidency of Porfirio Diaz, known as the Porfiriato. The majority of Mexican profits came from
the export of natural resources including mining, petroleum, and agriculture. With the
development of the railway system, these industries flourished. Before the railroads, mule
transportation was too expensive; this made only gold or silver worth the effort. Now the
production of copper, zinc and lead were made more profitable. By 1911, Mexico was the third
greatest petroleum producing nation. However,, these industries were owned by the United States.
In order to finance the cost of construction for the railroads, Diaz gave land to foreign developers.
This led to the commercialization of ranching and farming. U.S. investors benefited from the
export trade of resources such as cotton, rubber, garbanzos, fine woods and coffee. By doing so,
many peasants lost their land. By the end of the nineteenth century, the growth of railroads was
incredible. In 1910, the railroad system totaled over 24,000 miles, which was twenty four times the
amount they had in 1880. Although it was a dependent economy, the Mexican trade value grew by
900% during the Porfiriato. The landowners benefitted immensely from the railroads that increased
their property value. Furthermore, workers and city dwellers were given

Mathematics Is A Important Part Of The Curriculum Essay
I. Introduction In today s society mathematics is a vital part of day to day life. No matter what a
person is doing at home or at the workplace, he/she is constantly using different mathematics skills
to simply function. Then what does this mean for mathematics education? When someone needs to
utilize a skill every day then he/she needs a strong background in the skill. Therefore, today s
students need more than a just a working knowledge of mathematics or enough knowledge to pass
a test. Today s students need to understand how mathematics works and how to utilize mathematics
skills in the best way possible. II. Mathematics as an Important Part of Curriculum Mathematics
goes far beyond school. That is why it is such an important part of the curriculum. Dr. Richard
Restak said, ...intelligence is plastic and modifiable. All of our experiences result in the formation
of neuronal circuits. The richer, more varied, and more challenging the experiences, the more
elaborate the neuronal circuits. Learning mathematics can help form those neuronal circuits, which
is one of many reasons that mathematics is a vital part of school curriculum. Restak goes on to
discuss how the neurons formed by these challenging experiences help students learn other and
harder tasks and subjects. In Teaching Kids Why Math Matters Donaldson said, A person s
success in life depends on how well she can solve problems. No matter what her career or life
situation, she ll find satisfaction

Analysis Of You Are What You Eat By Mark Menjivar
The fridge is a personal and private space that can reveal a glimpse of one s lifestyle. A person s
eating habits can show what kind of person they are and why it maybe they are eating this way.
That is what Mark Menjivar aimed to prove as he took photographs of what he saw in different
people s fridges and collected them for his series You Are What You Eat . Menjivar traveled to 20
communities throughout the nation, and took pictures inside what was in a total 60 people s
fridges. He was trying to explore the tie between eating habits and identity. At first I wasn t quite
sure how a photograph could tell about one s character, due to the fact that a picture can say many
things and can be quite ambiguous. That was until I further analyzed... Show more content on

My favorite one is the photograph of the bartender s fridge. His fridge alone allowed me to
envision so many different circumstances. His fridge carried so much character. In both
photographs the fridge is completely cluttered and unorganized. The fridge from 2008, was filled
with boxes of take out. There isn t any evidence of him cooking anything for himself. This
allowed me to come to the conclusion that it s due to him being a male bachelor, who probably
doesn t know how to cook. There s also the possibility that it s due to him not having enough time
to cook for himself. Most of that food in the Styrofoam boxes are probably bar food that he took
home, because it was convenient for him. In the article, Menjivar mentioned how taking the
photograph was so unbearable due to the stench coming from the fridge. It s pretty clear the
fridge would smell, without him stating it. The fridge looked absolutely atrocious. The second
photograph in 2012, was still a cluttered mess, but there were no take out Styrofoam boxes. The
fast food had been replaced with some healthier options like humus, tuna, yogurt, some greens,
and plenty of drinks. For a bartender, I expected a lot more liquor in to be in both fridges. I was
kind of shocked to see there were more in 2012, and barely any in the photo in 2008. It s evident
that his bad eating habits had changed, even Menjivar mentions this. He also says that the

For all the millions of jobs out there, there are millions of people to go with them. Some examples

kids every day would make that job really hard for me. In conclusion, as many people know, germs
spread like wildfire. Working in a doctor s office with sick children every day, I would think that I
will probably get sick a lot until I get used to working in that kind of environment. So, the first

Sexism In Pygmalion
Pygmalion in Greek mythology was a Cypriot sculptor who constructed a woman out of ivory and
named her Galatea. According to Ovid s translation, after seeing the Propoetides prostituting
themselves in public for their defiance against the gods, he became uninterested in women;
however his statue was so beautiful and realistic that he fell in love with it. After a short time,
Aphrodite s festival day came, and Pygmalionmade several offerings at the shrine of Aphrodite.
Pygmalion was too scared to admit his true desire at the altar, so he quietly wished for a bride
who would be the living likeness of my ivory girl . When he returned home, he kissed his Galatea,
and found that the statue s lips felt warm. He kissed it again and found that... Show more content on

The author shows his feminist side as he has Eliza stand up for her self and break out of the
traditional position of women in the era. This brings a very feminist, free thinking theme to the
play that challenges the audience to break the usual traditions of England s segregated, unofficial
caste system of a society. In Shaw s display against inequality and sexism, there is another theme
that must be kept in mind. When thinking about how to achieve equality between the sexes, it
has to be taken into consideration that true equality does not necessarily come from being treated
equally. In order for equality to be achieved, we must feel equal to one another. This feeling
comes from making the effort to meet the needs of all people so that they can reach a point in life
where they feel dignified, and feel as though they have the ability and the will power to work to
raise themselves up in society.
The amount of character development in Pygmalion, the characters help to make the play seem
more realistic and interesting due to each character s complex and individual personality. Each one
contributes to the play s over all message in a different way. For example, Professor

Ideals And Controversies Of National Park Expansion
Ideals and Controversies of National Park Expansion Since the early 1920s to the 1970s, there
has been a debate regarding the perceptions and standards by which national parks should be
established and limiting the expansion of national parks, limiting access for people living in
urban areas and threatening open spaces due to urban sprawl and over population. Gradually
traditional perceptions gave way to the preservationists viewpoints which redefined and
gradually expanded federal definition of national parks. This was to include areas that may not
be extraordinarily scenic but still required environmental protection or allowed recreational
access for urban citizens, allowing for expansion and more funding. In 1872, Yellowstone
National Park in Wyoming became the first national park to be established by Congress and
President Grant with the signing of the Act of Dedication Law. It followed that any national park
established subsequently would be measured against Yellowstone s significance in American
culture. (Runte, 2010, p. 190) This is based on its impressive geological features, and majestic
and monumental scenery. By the early 1900s, there was controversy surrounding the criteria as to
what would define a national park, as President Roosevelt had signed in several tracts of lands as
national parks that did not hold scenic value, where not especially expansive tracts of land, and one
was utilized as a gaming preserve by a governmental branch. One proponent to the

Nation of Islam in the Light of Elijah Muhammad Essay
Nation of Islam in the Light of Elijah Muhammad
In 1961 James Baldwin met Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam movement at the
time. The time Baldwin spent within the Christian Church prior to his meeting with Elijah helped
him analyze what the Nation of Islam did for people. It allowed him to notice that everyone needed
a gimmick to keep them out of the ghetto, and it does not matter what the gimmick is (Baldwin
301). Baldwin realized that the Christian Church was his gimmick, so the Nation of Islam would
never do for him what the Christian Church had already done. Plus, some of the beliefs of the

loyal supporters of his made up religion, who of course paid money to the church. When Fard

One night Elijah Poole attended one of Fard s sermons and spoke with him afterwards. He told him

Hacker deserved to be compensated for his time in the amount of $34,000. Our optimal outcome
was to concede most Powerscreen royalties to HackerStar in order to receive payment for time

Interpersonal Conflict As A Stressful Conflicts In The...
Conflict is a complex behavior. It can occur on various levels as intrapersonal, interpersonal,
intragroup, or intergroup. Intrapersonal conflicts occur within the person, whereas interpersonal
conflict takes place between people. Likewise, intragroup conflict happens within one group of
people and intergroup conflict occurs between two or more groups of people.
Managing conflict in the workplace is a time consuming but necessary task for the physician leader.
Conflicts may exist between physicians, between physicians and staff, and between the staff or the
health care team and the patient or patient s family. The conflicts may range from disagreements to
major controversies that may lead to litigation or violence. Conflicts have an adverse effect on
productivity, morale, and patient care. They may result in high employee turnover and certainly

The dysfunctional physician presents an insidious cost to any practice or health care organization.
He or she increases the stress in the work environment and the accompanying loss of efficiency. In
a stressful workplace, such as the operating room with a berating physician, morale and team spirit

The Qing Dynasty prospered well into the 20th century despite the numerous problems the
administration faced. However, during the early days of the 20th century, civil disorders continued
to grow in such unmanageable factions that the administration was pushed to do something about
it. The high living standards of the previous century had contributed to a sharp increase in China s
population, there was approximately 400 million people living in China around the nineteenth
century. This spike increased population density, it also created a surplus of labour shortages, land

There were mainly six reasons for the failed attempts of reformation in the late Qing dynasty. These
six reasons include: Empress Dowager Cixi s role, the opposition from conservatives, lack of
careful planning, lack of capital, corruption and the rising popularity of revolutionary
movement. Empress Dowager Cixi was born in 1835 to a family of Manchu government
officials. It is believed that she was born somewhere in Beijing and had entered the Forbidden
City as a concubine to the emperor Xianfeng. She had moved up the social ladder after giving
birth to a male in 1856. During this time period Xianfeng was facing unmanageable problems,
these included, the Taiping rebellion, intrusive foreign powers and the depletion of the royal
treasury. After the death of emperor Xianfeng in 1861, Cixi was able to manipulate officials and
succeeded in placing her son as the next Emperor. The first gesture in the direction of
constitutional reform was made by empress Cixi in 1905, she ordered the formation of a small
study group of five princes and officials three Mancus and two Chinese who would travel to Japan,
the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and Italy to study their governments (Spence,

Rhetorical Analysis Of Letter From Birmingham Jail
In the midst of the Civil Rights movement, Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. found himself in a jail
cell in Birmingham, Alabama, one of the most segregated cities in the United States at the time.
While in that jail cell, King wrote Letter from Birmingham Jail in response to the city s religious
leaders. Through his use of ethos, pathos, and logos, King made a thought provoking and powerful
argument for the Civil Rights movement which continues to inspire change in the hearts of his
audience, both implied and actual. An effective strategy used by King was his careful placement

While the powerful personal experiences that King shares in the letter serve as emotional
appeals, they also serve as a type of evidence through personal experience. King has the gift of
story telling in a way that makes a person feel all of the same emotions that must have been felt
during those hard times. King makes the reader feel the frustration of those moments when his
community was told to wait for a better, more convenient time. He makes the reader feel the
sorrow of the moments when his daughter asks to go to a park but they are not allowed because
it is for whites only, or when his son asks why they are treated different for their skin color. He
makes a person feel the horror that must have been felt watching families get hurt or killed by
angry mobs or policemen. It is through this use of pathos that King continues to inspire humanity
to do better. Interwoven within the web of powerful emotion is an eye opening amount of logic.
King used pathos to open minds to the idea of change. Between the use of pathos, the logic starts to
flow in. He connected with the religious leaders through his chosen evidence. Each of King s claims
are carefully supported by examples that he drew from Christianity or through historical evidence
that he ties to Christian values. He brought it all together through connecting it with something he
knew his implied audience would be able to understand. The overall success of the

Roberts mediated and ruled over the issue of healthcare in a situation where the Supreme Court

Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born to Anna Cornelia Carbentus and Reverend Theodorus van

Vincent was the namesake of, could have added to his psychological trauma. There however is
no historical evidence of this being factual. While not is known much about Vincent, we do
know that he was a quiet child and spent little to no time in the arts that would one day make
him famous. In his adolescence Vincent had attended multiple schools, including a boarding
school in Zevenbergen for two years and then went on to attend the King Willem II secondary

Aristotle s Four Main Causes Essay
To some the causes and effects of things are mutually exclusive, and coexistence with one another.
When observing specific equipment or even life, the question stands that there must be an account
that took place before such items ceased to exist. Particularly, Aristotle argues that each thing,
whatever it may be, will have causes, or types of explanatory factors by which that thing can be
explained. The significant knowledge of causes allows for specific accounts to be known. It s like
questioning what occurred first the chicken or the egg. Anything in life offers a question of cause;
something must have been in order to bring about the nature of today. These causes are apparent in
answering everyday questions, which in turn explains that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The first causes of things are the Material cause: that from which, as a constituent present in it, a
thing comes to be. Material cause relates to the corporeal cause of a specific object (194b,24). The
material cause consequently transpires for the reason that the parts constituents as materials. Next,
the elucidation of the causes is a direct derivative from its own portions such as elements,
components, materials, establishing entire thing. Aristotle refers to bronze and silver as models of
material cause; which describes that the elements are the causes of a statue. So having bronze
will ultimately lead one to a statue. In referring to change the bronze transforms into the statue.
Physically the statue must undergo some process to change its current state into a statue. The
material causes of things allow us to function. For example the beds that we sleep on every day
and the homes or dorms people walk into are a material cause of some builder or manufactures.
Aristotle wrote That we must acquire knowledge, of the original causes since we say we know a
thing whenever we think we know its primary cause (983a, 24 16). Aristotle draws a discrepancy
amongst potential and practicality. This is directly correlated to the process of change and motion.
Change can be described as an object taking on a new form. The object has the potential to convert
into something different, and change is actually the potential of one form of matter to become
another form of

A Report On Bmw Z8
To the casual observer, the BMW Z8 looks like a 1960s roadster, its swoopy retro esque lines
belying the fact that it first saw light of day in 1999. BMW wanted to create a car to celebrate the
turn of the millennium, bringing together its past and future in one design. Therefore the
aluminium bodied Z8 draws heavily from Z07 concept car seen only a few years earlier at the
1997 Tokyo Motor Show, which in turn pays homage to the original BMW 507from the 1950s. The
car was met with great excitement by both the motoring press and customers alike, an appearance
in the James Bond movie, The World is Not Enough cemented its place as a desirable exotic.
Rivals in this retro modern category were thin on the ground, and there were precious few cars to
which the Z8 could be compared, especially when looking at its traditional German counterparts.
BMW itself had a model range comprising only of the 3, 5 and 7 series with the recently
introduced X5 having just dipped an adventurous toe into untapped segments. The 8 series was in
its last year and rivals had a similarly modest set of offerings to choose from. You had to move to
look at niche manufacturers and up your budget considerably to find any meaningful challengers,
the Ferrari 360 and Aston Martin DB7 come to mind and while both have their merits, it is the Z8
that is now worth considerably more than either of those cars in today s market.

The Police Force At The Baltimore Police Station
The Baltimore police force is provided with more resources than a small town police force. The
Wire showed how good the resources were at the Baltimore police station. The movie showed
how the media turned the murder case into a drug case. When the media got involved the police
chief made a new drug task force to fix the problem. This drug task force was made of people in
different departments of the Baltimore police. It shows how the Baltimore police force can spare
people for a new program. When this drug force started to get information about the suspect the
head chief funded the program. With the funds, the drug force got more cars, vans, and listening
devices to help them get the suspects faster. When the drug force got enough information for a
bust, the police force spared manpower and vehicles so they can get the suspect.
Across America, there are a lot of small towns that make up this country. Within small townships
there are police forces that only have five to ten officers that patrol acres of woods or farm land. On
a daily basis these officers deal with minor crime like drugs, aggravated assault, burglary, and
property crimes. If a crime happens it can take about twenty minutes for the township police to

La Alhambra, consequently it is always full of people.
El Mexuar
It is one of the oldest places from La Alhambra , therefor is very difficult to know the exact date
when it was built, as it suffered numerous destructions. Also, it is one of the places which was more
times destructed and rebuilt by the Christians.
It was the place where political events and where celebrated and sometimes it was used as
audience room. It also had a room at the top of the place where the king was listening without
being seen. It is very curious that this place did not have windows, it was only open at the top of
the roof. It is situated in a way that in the past the Arabic people could pray. During the Christian
time it was used as a chapel. Its appearance is from the reconstructions between the 16th century
and 20th century. The columns stand out from the Nazari architecture and also stands out the tile

The Mystery Ship Research Paper
The Mystery Ship
When I read this story it brought to mind all of those Dracula movies that I have seen where they
show a ship coming into harbor with no one alive aboard or a ship full of corpses. The American
ship Mary Celeste was seen sailing erratically by Captain David Morehouse aboard the British brig
Dei Gratia near the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The strangest thing was that the ship was
seaworthy and all of its stores and supplies were aboard and untouched but there was not a single
living soul on the vessel.
On November 7, 1872 the Mary Celeste sailed from New York harbor heading for Genoa, Italy.
Aboard the ship were Captain Benjamin S. Briggs, his wife and two year old daughter and a crew
of eight. The cargo consisted

Nutrition Personal Statement Essay
Personal Statement
My grandmother has her type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for almost 30 years. My grandmother herself and
my families believe that all my grandmother s adversities are contributed solely to the affection of
the illness and no other patient s lifestyle, the influence from other members opinion and action,
and the incomplete education from a professional person. After becoming a clinical nutrition
student, it astonishes me that my grandmother, being a patient with Type 2 DM for a long time, has
no idea about carbohydrate accounting and lifestyle modification, and instead she avoids everything
with carbohydrate inappropriately but does consume high fat foods frequently. It also surprises me

Shakespeare Literary Influences
William Shakespeare, the most famous of all English writers, has written many works.
Shakespeare s life has very much to do with the style of his writing as his stories are from his
past experiences. In a very fascinating way, he had the ability to translate the issues of his own
time into universal themes. Shakespeare was of interest with his controversial. He was a
common phenomenon in his day, as he was part of a theatrical world. Shakespeare was
influenced by many different writers such as Christopher Mowe, Geoffrey Marlowe.
Transcendentalists were interested in him because he used his own issues to display actual
things that go in society. For example, one of the most famous plays of all time he wrote was
Romeo and Juliet . This love story reveals fresh depths and nuances when experienced directly
because of the beauty and precision of Shakespeare s language and his brilliant perception of
character. Shakespeare includes much comic byplay between Romeo and his friends and between
Juliet and her Nurse, thus enriching the texture of the play as its characters appear in diverse
lights. Although most of his work was viewed as universal and phenomenal, Henry David Thoreau
had less praise for Shakespeare (Wayne). Poet jones was very ultimately concerned with the lack
of religion, specifically Christian morality, in Shakespeare s plays (Wayne). In Romeo and Juliet,
Shakespeare displayed different levels of family expectations. The decisions people make

Banana Trade War Between The European Union And The United...
Introduction
In this paper, I will summarize the banana trade war between the European Union and the United
States. I will examine the information, explain the argument, and explain the affects this banana
war has had on economies and laborers. I will also investigate Chiquita s role, the US s retaliation,
examine the rules and regulations of the World Trade Organization(WTO) and explain their role in
the dispute. Lastly, I will provide my assessment of the dispute and how I would resolve it acting
as a representative of the WTO. This paper is outlined to answer each task to ensure evidence is
provided to support my findings regarding the banana trade war.
Should the European Union be forced to end this connection with its old colonies, as the United
States have requested, and buy its bananas from other countries as well?
Yes, just as prominent and successful as the European Union s (EU s) stance has been on this
industry, it can all be dismantled and have greater and more far reaching consequences if they do
not have to buy bananas from other countries as well.
The financial stability of the EU, US, multinational companies, and its laborers can be drastically
impacted. The livelihood, jobs and industries, can impact economies. If these other smaller
countries are not taken care of their economies could collapse or they could resort to illegal drug
industries, illegal immigration, and even drug trafficking which causes more harm than good.

How Globalization has Affected the American Automotive...
Globalization brought upon many changes to the American Automotive Industry in 1975.
Increasing demand for import automobiles and the Energy Policy and Conservation Act served to
be a real threat to the Ford Motor Company, American Motors, Chrysler Corporation, and General
Motors. Out of these four manufacturers Chrysler was affected the worst by the industrial change,
as they required a federal aid and required brand /management changes to revive themselves.
Globalization formed a more competitive market in the United States during the 1970 s due to the
changing emissions standards. The American Automotive Industryhad to adjust to the new
emissions standards from the Clean Air Act of 1970, and the fuel economy requirements of the
Energy Policy and Conservation Act, all while building cars that attracted to American consumers.
These new requirements caused many Americans to lose their curb appeal for larger, higher output
vehicles. The Japanese and European imports were lighter and more fuel efficient, so naturally
they were better suited to meet new emission requirements. As a result imports took up 18% of cars
sold in America, a share almost 20% higher than previous years, but none were actually made in
America. In fact imports were so successful that Japan had to limit their import control to protect
the U.S. Automotive industry while it recuperated. However the production of transplants vehicles
rose from 1.4 percent of the market to 16 percent. The Japanese,

The Concept Of Imagination, By Giambattista Vico And...
The concept of imagination is classified to be highly significant within the presence of our
contemporary generation as it is construed from diverse forms of perspectives. The role of
imagination is defined to be imperative within the cognitive spectrum as it allows individuals to
understand the functionality of the human mindwithin the world (Pern 162). Furthermore, the
concept of imaginationis fundamental within the study of cultural psychology, as well as
apprehending the objective behind the study of semiosis (process of signs) (Pern 162). In addition,
philosophers and thinkers have centralized various forms of explanations and theories regarding the
source that stimulates imagination and how it is a critical part of understanding human behavior
within society (Pern 163). For example, famous philosophers and thinkers Giambattista Vico and
Thomas Hobbes emphasized the significance of imagination and semiotic activity within their
respective theories (Pern 162 163). Additionally, Vico and Hobbes addressed similar and divergent
ideologies regarding the process of imagination conceptualizing how the concept of imagination is
imperative to understanding the human experience. Giambattista Vico established his ideology
concerning imagination on the grounds of independence as imagination does fulfill the function of
rationality and logical thinking. However, Hobbes held a contradictory viewpoint on the different
concepts driven by the human mind such as sensitivity,

The Broken Window Theory
In 1982, James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling presented an article that called for a change in
police tactics to enhance neighborhood safety entitled simply Broken Windows . This article was
hailed as the godsend that everyone was waiting for because at the time crime rates were
extremely high and murder had peaked just two years prior to the release of this article. Wilson and
Kelling declare that a return to order maintenance policefunction is the key to providing safe
neighborhoods (Kelling and Wilson 104). This is achieved through foot patrol officers that enact
regulations for their patrol areas which keep individuals in their place and strengthen the informal
social control mechanisms of natural communities (Kelling and Wilson... Show more content on

The broken window signifies that no one in the community cares and therefore no one will care if
more windows are broken. This theory is then applied to crime and argues that in an area where the
unchecked panhandler is, in effect, the first broken window (Kelling and Wilson 107). The
authors advocate a return to order maintenance in problem neighborhoods where foot patrol
officers regulate the residents of that area by controlling the disorderly people. Wilson and
Kelling describe disorderly people as individuals who are not violent people, nor, necessarily,
criminals, but disreputable or obstreperous or unpredictable people: panhandlers, drunks, addicts,
rowdy teenagers, prostitutes, loiterers, [and] the mentally disturbed (104). In the article, Wilson
and Kelling, discussed a study regarding foot patrol policing in Newark, New Jersey. The study
found that although the officers on foot patrol did not lower crime in Newark s neighborhoods,
the residents felt safer by seeing the officers on their patrols. The authors argued that this
perception of safety is result of the officers maintaining a surface order in their assigned patrols. In
addition, there was a visible law enforcement presence that caused residents to be more likely to
enforce the neighborhood s rules on their

The Architecture Of Gothic Literature And The Romantic Era
Today s literature and the way is expressed is greatly influenced by the literature of the Romantic
Era which the Gothic literature had part on. The Gothic Literature is build by how the authors
convey the feelings of horrors to the readers through the imagination of the reader which can be
expanded through the reading. Gothic Literature is strongly influenced by the architecture of
haunted places, which gives off the aura of horror and terrorin the reading in order to give these
feelings to the readers. Although many things come to play in the architecture of the Gothic
literature, doors are an essential way to gives off this aura, where doors lead to uncertain places
which unexpected things can happen at anytime; examples of this kind are Ann Radcliffe s
work The Romance of the Forest and Horace Walpole s work The Castle of Otranto . Both stories
contain characters that experience the thrill of entering new places that are lead by an unusual
door, which gives the readers clues at what kind of feelings this type of literature is based. An
example in The Romance of the Forest is when Adeline is curious about what the door that she
discovers leads to. A mystery seems to hang over these chambers... which it is, perhaps, my lot to
develope; I will, at least, see to what that door leads (Radcliffe 600). This shows that the character
has the boldness of entering a new room she never encounter before. Additionally, in The Castle of
Otranto , Isabella has a similar

The Memory System Essay example
Memories are creative recollections of past experiences that are unique to each individual. They
define us and give us our identity. Memories are a collection of information, which at one time was
new to us, and as we learned and progressed, that information became stored as memory. The main
fact to memoryis that practice and repetition is a key asset to making the brain encode the
information as memory. When the brain encodes this information it is stored, waiting to be
retrieved. When we memorize something, it is stored for a certain amount of time in the brain, the
more we recall this information the more familiar we become with it, making it easier to
remember and recall later in life. The process of memory is still a mystery, but... Show more content

While yet it is the most complex process neuroscience has ever tried to define. Most theorists
believe that the brain encodes information in two different types, motor skills memory and factual
memory. Motor skills memory is the memorization of functions like running, walking, or eating.
While factual memory is associated with the memorization of telephone number, names, places,
and experiences. Some theorists believe this is the basic foundation to memories. Associated
with these two types are three levels, Sensory memory, Short term memory, and Long term
memory. Sensory memory is the level, which absorbs the things around us using the five main
senses, sight, smell, touch, sound, and taste. This level of memory is thought to only last a
matter of seconds, and only moves on to the next level if enough attention is given to the
information. (Baddeley, 1976) If not enough attention is given to the information it is ignored by
the brain and forgotten. (Howe, 1983) The second level of memory is the Short term memory.
This level is believed to only have a capacity of 7 items, and have a duration time of no more
than thirty seconds. (Bjork, 1996) When memories in the short term are used more and more it
sends it to the next level, but again this is only done by practice or repetition. A way for most
people to remember more things, in the short term is called Chunking. This is where someone will

Study of Dosso Dossi s Jupiter, Mercury and Virtue Essay
Study of Dosso Dossi s Jupiter, Mercury and Virtue
Dosso Dossi (c.1486 1542) was a Renaissance painter from the city of Ferrara in Northern Italy.
Collaborating with his brother Battista, Dosso created some of the most groundbreaking yet
baffling works for the dukes of Ferrara. Dosso s paintings, however, remained largely unheard of
apart from occasional appearances in academic journals, until a series of traveling exhibitions in
1999 brought the artist back in attention. Heavily influenced by High Renaissance masters Leonardo
and Michelangelo, as well as by Venetian painters, Dosso adopted a rich yet still subtle colour
palette. What set him apart from his peers, on the other hand, were his atmospheric and
impressionistic landscape ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The effect is particularly striking on Virtue s shortened right arm, which alludes to the space beyond
the principal plane.
Above all, the most distinctive feature in Dosso s painting is its imaginative treatment of
mythological subjects. As indicated by a good number of art historians, Virtue, here personified as
a goddess, turns out to have been mistreated and abused by Fortune and her companions. Virtue s
friends, who were unable to protect her and thus fled, left her to be beaten, stripped bare, and
dragged through the mud (Fiorenza, 152) by Fortune and her fellow bullies. Immediately following
Virtue s mistreatment is the scene depicted on canvas: Virtue comes to Jupiter to inform him of
Fortune s crime, when she is given the trivial excuse that the gods are busy making sure that the
butterflies have beautifully painted wings.
Amusingly, this brief background story is practically the only part that the art historians agreed
upon. Early interpretations include a complicated love story between Mercury and Virtue, as well
as the possible allusion that Jupiter is in fact a portrait of Duke Alfonso I d Este, the commissioner
of the painting. (Fiorenza, 29) Some even suggested the painting was created to celebrate the artist s

The Lack Of A Central Holocaust Memorial
ecrying the lack of a central Holocaust memorial in Germany, a group of German citizens begins
a decade long campaign for a highly visible, national Memorial to Europe s Murdered Jews. The
idea for the memorial is first proposed by journalist Lea Rosh and historian Eberhard Jaeckel who
together had made a documentary about the deportation and mass murder of Europe s Jews
between 1933 and 1945.
November 1992
Key decisions
The German government decides that the memorial should be devoted only to Jewish victims of
the Holocaust and designates a prominent location in the center of the newly unified city of Berlin:
The five acre site will lie due south of the Brandenburg Gate, which until 1989 had divided East and
West Berlin. The site is also just a few steps from the buried remains of the bunker where Adolf
Hitler committed suicide. Amidst the Berlin s tremendous construction boom (which garnered it
the nickname Europe s Hong Kong ), the monument is but one of many construction projects that
anticipate the relocation of the German federal government from Bonn to Berlin by the year 2001
the same year that the monument is scheduled to be unveiled.
November 1993
Another memorial is dedicated
Germany dedicates one of its central monuments, the Neue Wache, or New Guard House, to the
victims of war and tyranny. Inside is a classical statue of a woman cradling her grown, slain son, an
enlargement of one of German Chancellor Helmut Kohl s favorite works. Critics

  • 2. The Texas Horned Lizard Essay The Texas horned lizard, Phrynosoma cornutum, is a species in the lizard family, Phrynosomatidae, which has ten genera and a diverse group of over 125 different species (Hammerson 2007; Cossel Jr. 1997). Lizards in this family can be found in Mexico, Panama, most areas of the United States and parts of Canada (Heying 2003). Phrynosomatids range in a variety of forms, but are most commonly distinguished by their small size (less than 10 cm long), rough and keeled scales, spikes on their bodies, and the fusion of the sides of their teeth to the sides of their inner jawbones, known as pleurodont teeth (Heying 2003). The thirteen species in the horned lizardgenus, Phrynosoma, can be identified more specifically by their flattened bodies... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has developed highly efficient mechanisms for collecting water on the ground and moisture in the air and transporting it across its skin to its mouth (Map 2010). The Texas horned lizardhas hinged scales, which are interconnected to a system of tubular canals located in the thin keratin layer of its skin (Sherbrooke et al 2007). When water or moisture comes into contact with the its scales, capillary forces pull water into the lizard s tubular canals, which is then transported to the mouth for consumption (Sherbrooke et al 2007). The lizard s hinged scales have also adapted a greater efficiency of absorbing water by increasing their surface area, which allows for more water to be absorbed and transported at once (Sherbrooke et al 2007). Furthermore, the lizard has adapted a buccal pumping mechanism in its mouth, which allows it to pump a constant flow of water into its mouth to drink (Map 2010; Sherbrooke et al 2007). It has modified structures around its mouth that, combined with certain tongue and jaw movements, allows it to lower the water pressure and pull a constant flow of water through its tubular canals and directly into its mouth (Map 2010; Sherbrooke et al 2007). The Texas horned lizardalso exhibits behavioral adaptations that have increased its water absorbing efficiency. To help increase the capture of water from its scales, the lizard lowers its head and body to the ground and sticks out its legs to increase the surface area of its body in ... • 3. Symbolism In In Her Secret Heart By Miss Mijares Being a person who is used to being in control, she is in complete confusion on how to handle her current situation. Denial helps her cope and focus on what she must do in order to survive her situation. Then again, it also causes her to ignore problems for which there are solutions if dealt with. Miss Mijares is uncertain if she is ready to begin a new phase in her stationary life. The third symbolism is Miss Mijares dream of being lost. This suggests that she thinks that she has lost her primary dreams as a woman. The dream of finding a husband and being a good wife vanished along all the interviews she has done. The thought of bearing children and becoming a mother remained hidden. Because of her constant denial, she cannot identify ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was shown in the lines from the story: In her secret heart, Miss Mijares young dreams fluttered faintly to life, seeming monstrous in the rain, near this man seeming monstrous but sweet overwhelming (Tuvera 58) She thinks it is monstrous to have feelings for the man because she is a white collared worker and he is a carpenter. Society will judge their relationship. It is unlikely that this will be accepted by people since this normally does not happen in the community. She is expected to be with someone of the same class. She is scared that she will be a total derision to her friends and her family. But in the end, her head got in sync of her deeper heart s intent. She expresses her feelings and desires for the carpenter as she accepts his apology and goes with him, sharing the same passion as her through the storm. Within the storm, the sadness of Miss Mijares life is cleansed and a rebirth happens in her life. She now finds true happiness and can achieve her dreams as a woman. She is willing to enjoy the ride and see the beauty in this new experience. She has accepted this new journey in her life, a journey more amazing than she can ever imagine. It may lead her to unexpected places, but she has someone right beside her to accompany her and to get through with them all. Stepping through disaster is a way to a new beginning. She knows that as old as she is now, she can still learn new things in her life, if she is willing to be a beginner. Through her dissatisfaction as a great starting point, she had the power, strength and energy for change to push through. With this change, it was not only a new chapter in her life, but a beginning of a new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hasbro seems comfortable in gaining a steady cash cow from monopoly until it declines and dies a natural death eventually becoming a dead dog, but what if Hasbro thought bigger? Some of Hasbro s main core values which some are : Community, Innovation, Fun and Diversity amongst others , if I myself had to be responsible for the marketing of Hasbro and was in charge to come with new ideas I would come up with a Monopoly Theme Park . What else could be better and more successful than a theme park for a company like Hasbro? Having the capital to invest and wait for a long term profit, Hasbro in my opinion is losing out on an idea like this. If Again I had to be in charge the theme park would include Kiddie Rides to Adult Thrill Rides, Would also include a life size monopoly where people can gather together as communities and enjoy a day out. Organising also competitions for people to come up with new ideas for different monopolies from around the world and the winner will get a monopoly made to his name. Why not have a Studio Booth for people to get photographs and make their own family monopoly? Nan s house could be the least valued property while Uncle Mat s Villa is the highest! Australian Aborigines And Their Crisis Madison Lafitte Karol Chandler Ezell Cultural Anthropology 231.001 11/17/2014 Australian Aborigines and their Crisis Australia s Aborigines are often hailed as the world s longest surviving culture, easily dating back 60,000 years, existing long before many ancient societies such as the Greeks and Romans. Since they are such an old culture many people wonder how they were able to remain in existence for so long while of culture perished around them. The answer can be found in their adaptive nature; having such a close bound with the land around them, taught the aboriginals the importance of change and adapting (Australia.gov.au). While it might be debatable that Australia s natives are the longest surviving culture, there is no doubt that the Aborigines animistic religion is the oldest existing. Their religion is ripe with multiple different gods, often represented in the forms of animals or notable landscape features. There is no one central god, instead many deities were spread across the continent of Australia, each spirit fulfilling their role in the world. Creation beings were involved in the creation of the world, ancestral beings taught humans how to hunt and make weapons, totemic beings were the original form of animals. Being a culture that places high emphasize on their religion, many of the dot art, a form of painting or drawing that involves creating hundreds of small dots to create the overall picture, is often found in caves or the sides of rocks, the some ... And just in the last few decades there has been a huge spike in arm injuries, and a lot of them have been in younger players. Year round baseball is number one, is what Dr. Andrews said about Tommy John surgery(Snyder). What year round baseballmeans is that players play baseball in the fall and winter months, this never happened in years before. Also kids are now being allowed times for their arms to rest and heal. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Over the course of baseballs long existence it has been a very laid back sport with only minor injuries. But in the last decade or so the injuries have been popping up all over. Definitely the most common one being the tearing of the ucl tendon in the arm. This injury takes time to tear and it usually starts to hurt before the ligament actually snaps. Most commonly, there is a gradual onset of elbow pain due to repetitive stresses on the ligament (Hopkins Medicine). But there are cases where thee injury can be sudden and happen on one pitch. There have been more and more of these injuries but the biggest shock is the amount of young kids dealing with pain in their elbows. This is an effect of year round baseball, because the kids and teens are not getting their proper rest in between pitch outings. Also their coaches could be pushing them to pitch more innings and throw more pitches. But not only are young people getting these injuries older pros are also. • 11. Yet another analysis of the images in The Soul selects her own Society are that they create a theme analogous to God and the universe. The Soul as the human being sees herself as god like, she creates a universe of her own choosing by creating a defined space with her carefully chosen words Door , Gate which keep the external world out. Whereas God has created Heaven for His personal space, the poet s haven is not grand, but simple low Gate , her Mat . The poet is the common man who becomes superior through linguistic word play. The suggestion of superiority as stated above infer that the soul has given herself heavenly qualities. Each word has been carefully chosen by Dickinson to convey her message. The search for the exact word is lauded in Dickinson s poem I dwell in Possibility . In this poem she speculates on the craft of poetry. There were abolitionists, women s rights activists, education reformists, and many other titles that people took to change the inhumane lives that they were being lead by. One woman in particular, Susan B. Anthony, took on more than just one of these titles. She took on much more than most others would or could have. Anthony was born in February of 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. She was raised in a Quaker family with activist traditions. After her and Stanton s petition for more laws on limiting the sales of alcohol was declined because the amount of women s signatures was greater than the amount of men s Anthony became greatly infuriated on the point that woman had no say in the government. In 1866, Stanton and Anthony founded the American Equal Rights Association and started printing a newspaper in Rochester, The Revolution, in 1868. • 13. Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead Analysis In Tom Stoppard s play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, we see Ros and Guil adventure through their confused yet contented lives as events occur around them that seal their fate. In hindsight, their presence and lives seem rather pointless. The Tragedy of Hamlet could have functioned fine without them, so why are they there and why are they not a single character? Most readers could interpret that they each embody some concept. This literature review will attempt to investigate the symbolism of the story and how other authors perceive it. When analyzing these characters, one cannot help but wonder what Shakespeare had in mind for them. American Historian, Preserved Smith, delves into a few of Shakespeare s influences. He and many contemporaries matriculated at Wittenberg. Shakespeare then may have chosen Wittenberg simply on account of its fame. It is interesting to note, however, that Hamlet s Wittenberg friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, may actually have been drawn from the life, as there were men of this name at the university. A Holger Rosencrantz who studied at Wittenberg in the years 1592 95 was later attached to the Danish embassy in London. A Frederick Rosencrantz, son of another Holger Rosencrantz and of Karen Gyldenstjerne, matriculated in December, 1586.5 There was also a Gabriel Giildenstern Danus natus in equestri familia who registered on 15 May, 1573.6 Is it not likely that the poet met, or heard of, one or more of these gentlemen at ... • 15. Tale Of An Hour By John Kasmer Analysis As the tale starts out, she was under the oppressive control of her husband and did not have a personality of her own. What John wanted, John got, and that was the way it had always been. The narrator was ensnared under her husband s crude ideals, with no say in the matter, and having an imagination as well as a creative thought process was the polar opposite of her significant other. Kasmer claims that this lifestyle and sense of servitude prevented the protagonist from being able to try to express her feelings and voice her opinions to her husband (Kasmer 7). It discouraged her from being a unique individual. As you read the tale, her language and tone reflect this; constantly referring to herself as one which creates an eerie ...echo of anonymity... In spite of the wife s request, the husband holds firm to his decision and sends her upstairs. The barred windows in the nursery represents the narrator s captivity not only her husband, but by society s overwhelming oppression towards women while the nursery represents what society thinks about how to treat a woman; they are to be treated like mere children that need constant supervision since they cannot think for themselves (MacPike 287). ... As Spain largely benefited, the indigenous civilizations of Mexico were ravaged and left to be entirely dependent on their foreign counterpart. Although he was right, the economic boom came with severe consequences that left Mexico largely dependent on the United States. Mexico s economy boomed during the thirty year presidency of Porfirio Diaz, known as the Porfiriato. The majority of Mexican profits came from the export of natural resources including mining, petroleum, and agriculture. With the development of the railway system, these industries flourished. Before the railroads, mule transportation was too expensive; this made only gold or silver worth the effort. Now the production of copper, zinc and lead were made more profitable. By 1911, Mexico was the third greatest petroleum producing nation. However,, these industries were owned by the United States. In order to finance the cost of construction for the railroads, Diaz gave land to foreign developers. This led to the commercialization of ranching and farming. U.S. investors benefited from the export trade of resources such as cotton, rubber, garbanzos, fine woods and coffee. By doing so, many peasants lost their land. By the end of the nineteenth century, the growth of railroads was incredible. In 1910, the railroad system totaled over 24,000 miles, which was twenty four times the amount they had in 1880. There s also the possibility that it s due to him not having enough time to cook for himself. Most of that food in the Styrofoam boxes are probably bar food that he took home, because it was convenient for him. Ideals And Controversies Of National Park Expansion Ideals and Controversies of National Park Expansion Since the early 1920s to the 1970s, there has been a debate regarding the perceptions and standards by which national parks should be established and limiting the expansion of national parks, limiting access for people living in urban areas and threatening open spaces due to urban sprawl and over population. Gradually traditional perceptions gave way to the preservationists viewpoints which redefined and gradually expanded federal definition of national parks. This was to include areas that may not be extraordinarily scenic but still required environmental protection or allowed recreational access for urban citizens, allowing for expansion and more funding. In 1872, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming became the first national park to be established by Congress and President Grant with the signing of the Act of Dedication Law. It followed that any national park established subsequently would be measured against Yellowstone s significance in American culture. There were mainly six reasons for the failed attempts of reformation in the late Qing dynasty. These six reasons include: Empress Dowager Cixi s role, the opposition from conservatives, lack of careful planning, lack of capital, corruption and the rising popularity of revolutionary movement. Empress Dowager Cixi was born in 1835 to a family of Manchu government officials. It is believed that she was born somewhere in Beijing and had entered the Forbidden City as a concubine to the emperor Xianfeng. She had moved up the social ladder after giving birth to a male in 1856. During this time period Xianfeng was facing unmanageable problems, these included, the Taiping rebellion, intrusive foreign powers and the depletion of the royal treasury. • 30. Rhetorical Analysis Of Letter From Birmingham Jail In the midst of the Civil Rights movement, Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. found himself in a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama, one of the most segregated cities in the United States at the time. While in that jail cell, King wrote Letter from Birmingham Jail in response to the city s religious leaders. Through his use of ethos, pathos, and logos, King made a thought provoking and powerful argument for the Civil Rights movement which continues to inspire change in the hearts of his audience, both implied and actual. An effective strategy used by King was his careful placement and articulation of each paragraph in the letter. Had King decided to go straight into defending his actions, the letter would not have been well regarded. He used... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the powerful personal experiences that King shares in the letter serve as emotional appeals, they also serve as a type of evidence through personal experience. King has the gift of story telling in a way that makes a person feel all of the same emotions that must have been felt during those hard times. King makes the reader feel the frustration of those moments when his community was told to wait for a better, more convenient time. He makes the reader feel the sorrow of the moments when his daughter asks to go to a park but they are not allowed because it is for whites only, or when his son asks why they are treated different for their skin color. He makes a person feel the horror that must have been felt watching families get hurt or killed by angry mobs or policemen. It is through this use of pathos that King continues to inspire humanity to do better. Interwoven within the web of powerful emotion is an eye opening amount of logic. King used pathos to open minds to the idea of change. Between the use of pathos, the logic starts to flow in. He connected with the religious leaders through his chosen evidence. Each of King s claims are carefully supported by examples that he drew from Christianity or through historical evidence that he ties to Christian values. When observing specific equipment or even life, the question stands that there must be an account that took place before such items ceased to exist. Particularly, Aristotle argues that each thing, whatever it may be, will have causes, or types of explanatory factors by which that thing can be explained. The significant knowledge of causes allows for specific accounts to be known. It s like questioning what occurred first the chicken or the egg. Anything in life offers a question of cause; something must have been in order to bring about the nature of today. These causes are apparent in answering everyday questions, which in turn explains that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first causes of things are the Material cause: that from which, as a constituent present in it, a thing comes to be. Material cause relates to the corporeal cause of a specific object (194b,24). The material cause consequently transpires for the reason that the parts constituents as materials. Next, the elucidation of the causes is a direct derivative from its own portions such as elements, components, materials, establishing entire thing. Aristotle refers to bronze and silver as models of material cause; which describes that the elements are the causes of a statue. So having bronze will ultimately lead one to a statue. In referring to change the bronze transforms into the statue. Physically the statue must undergo some process to change its current state into a statue. The material causes of things allow us to function. For example the beds that we sleep on every day and the homes or dorms people walk into are a material cause of some builder or manufactures. Aristotle wrote That we must acquire knowledge, of the original causes since we say we know a thing whenever we think we know its primary cause (983a, 24 16). Aristotle draws a discrepancy amongst potential and practicality. This is directly correlated to the process of change and motion. Change can be described as an object taking on a new form. BMW wanted to create a car to celebrate the turn of the millennium, bringing together its past and future in one design. Therefore the aluminium bodied Z8 draws heavily from Z07 concept car seen only a few years earlier at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, which in turn pays homage to the original BMW 507from the 1950s. The car was met with great excitement by both the motoring press and customers alike, an appearance in the James Bond movie, The World is Not Enough cemented its place as a desirable exotic. Rivals in this retro modern category were thin on the ground, and there were precious few cars to which the Z8 could be compared, especially when looking at its traditional German counterparts. BMW itself had a model range comprising only of the 3, 5 and 7 series with the recently introduced X5 having just dipped an adventurous toe into untapped segments. The 8 series was in its last year and rivals had a similarly modest set of offerings to choose from. You had to move to look at niche manufacturers and up your budget considerably to find any meaningful challengers, the Ferrari 360 and Aston Martin DB7 come to mind and while both have their merits, it is the Z8 that is now worth considerably more than either of those cars in today s market. Increasing demand for import automobiles and the Energy Policy and Conservation Act served to be a real threat to the Ford Motor Company, American Motors, Chrysler Corporation, and General Motors. Out of these four manufacturers Chrysler was affected the worst by the industrial change, as they required a federal aid and required brand /management changes to revive themselves. Globalization formed a more competitive market in the United States during the 1970 s due to the changing emissions standards. The American Automotive Industryhad to adjust to the new emissions standards from the Clean Air Act of 1970, and the fuel economy requirements of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, all while building cars that attracted to American consumers. These new requirements caused many Americans to lose their curb appeal for larger, higher output vehicles. The Japanese and European imports were lighter and more fuel efficient, so naturally they were better suited to meet new emission requirements. As a result imports took up 18% of cars sold in America, a share almost 20% higher than previous years, but none were actually made in America. Study of Dosso Dossi s Jupiter, Mercury and Virtue Essay Study of Dosso Dossi s Jupiter, Mercury and Virtue Dosso Dossi (c.1486 1542) was a Renaissance painter from the city of Ferrara in Northern Italy. Collaborating with his brother Battista, Dosso created some of the most groundbreaking yet baffling works for the dukes of Ferrara. Dosso s paintings, however, remained largely unheard of apart from occasional appearances in academic journals, until a series of traveling exhibitions in 1999 brought the artist back in attention. Heavily influenced by High Renaissance masters Leonardo and Michelangelo, as well as by Venetian painters, Dosso adopted a rich yet still subtle colour palette. What set him apart from his peers, on the other hand, were his atmospheric and impressionistic landscape ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The effect is particularly striking on Virtue s shortened right arm, which alludes to the space beyond the principal plane. Above all, the most distinctive feature in Dosso s painting is its imaginative treatment of mythological subjects. As indicated by a good number of art historians, Virtue, here personified as a goddess, turns out to have been mistreated and abused by Fortune and her companions. Virtue s friends, who were unable to protect her and thus fled, left her to be beaten, stripped bare, and dragged through the mud (Fiorenza, 152) by Fortune and her fellow bullies. Immediately following Virtue s mistreatment is the scene depicted on canvas: Virtue comes to Jupiter to inform him of Fortune s crime, when she is given the trivial excuse that the gods are busy making sure that the butterflies have beautifully painted wings. Amusingly, this brief background story is practically the only part that the art historians agreed upon. Early interpretations include a complicated love story between Mercury and Virtue, as well as the possible allusion that Jupiter is in fact a portrait of Duke Alfonso I d Este, the commissioner of the painting. (Fiorenza, 29) Some even suggested the painting was created to celebrate the artist s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. The Lack Of A Central Holocaust Memorial ecrying the lack of a central Holocaust memorial in Germany, a group of German citizens begins a decade long campaign for a highly visible, national Memorial to Europe s Murdered Jews. The idea for the memorial is first proposed by journalist Lea Rosh and historian Eberhard Jaeckel who together had made a documentary about the deportation and mass murder of Europe s Jews between 1933 and 1945. November 1992 Key decisions The German government decides that the memorial should be devoted only to Jewish victims of the Holocaust and designates a prominent location in the center of the newly unified city of Berlin: The five acre site will lie due south of the Brandenburg Gate, which until 1989 had divided East and West Berlin. The site is also just a few steps from the buried remains of the bunker where Adolf Hitler committed suicide. Amidst the Berlin s tremendous construction boom (which garnered it the nickname Europe s Hong Kong ), the monument is but one of many construction projects that anticipate the relocation of the German federal government from Bonn to Berlin by the year 2001 the same year that the monument is scheduled to be unveiled. November 1993 Another memorial is dedicated Germany dedicates one of its central monuments, the Neue Wache, or New Guard House, to the victims of war and tyranny.
