The program Lindiwe attends, called Siyakha Nentsha ("building with young people"), aims to provide vulnerable youth with skills and information to access social services, education, jobs and support themselves rather than resorting to risky choices like sex work. Siyakha Nentsha staff are now helping Lindiwe's case to give her hope and ability to support herself in the future.

Turkey has a population of around 77 million people, with 25 million under the age of 25. Official unemployment is 10%, but unofficial unemployment is around 15%, with youth unemployment at around 25%. Reasons for high youth unemployment include a lack of job experience, problems with the educational system and foreign language skills, low salaries, and issues with Kurdish populations. While the government supports youth entrepreneurship through founding programs, bureaucracy makes the process of starting a business complicated. Additionally, older generations in Turkey still tend to distrust youth and see them as irresponsible and not caring about important traditions and religion, leading to generational conflicts.

Ruth Shinoda - London Child Poverty Conference
Ruth Shinoda from the Department for Education launched a consultation on better measures of child poverty. The consultation will run until February 15th 2013 and seeks input on developing a new measure of child poverty. The current relative income measure is flawed as it showed a decrease in poverty simply due to a fall in median income nationally, while absolute poverty levels remained unchanged. Individuals and organizations are invited to submit responses via email or post or online to contribute to the consultation.

Peter Scott, CEO of ENABLE Scotland, gave a presentation at the TCV Greenability Conference about issues facing those with learning disabilities in Scotland. He discussed that approximately 120,000 people in Scotland have a learning disability. People with learning disabilities often have poorer health than others and die around 20 years younger on average. They also experience high levels of social isolation, deprivation, and poverty. The Scottish government's 10-year strategy called "The Keys to Life" aims to improve health, social connections, and dignity for those with learning disabilities. Green Gyms provide a natural way to improve both physical and mental health for this group through outdoor activities and social interaction in nature.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is committed to providing development assistance that improves the lives of women, men, and children around the world. USAID has a special interest in the advancement of women worldwide. Women’s health, education, economic opportunity and human rights are at the core of successful, stable societies and economic growth.
One of the fundamental principles of the Department of State/USAID strategic plan is that “all citizens, men and women, are vital to meeting the critical challenges of today and reaching the goals of equality, peace and security.” USAID’s commitment to the full inclusion of women dates back to 1973, when the United States Congress passed the “Percy Amendment” to the Foreign Assistance Act, requiring that particular attention be given to integrating women into national economies to improve the status of women and to assist the overall development effort.
Today, USAID embraces this goal, and seeks to understand the different needs of men and women, to improve the efficiency and overall impact of its programs, and to ensure that both women and men have equitable access to development activities and their benefits. This document profiles USAID efforts to address barriers to full access to opportunity for women and men throughout the developing world. The success stories are a testament to the progress women and men have made. The selected examples illustrate the many efforts made by the USAID field missions, the Office of Women in Development, and other operating units in USAID to fully integrate women into development programs and policies throughout USAID. It is important to note that women’s leadership is not treated as a separate category in this report, but is reflected in all the examples.

The project aims not only to get good marks but also to raise awareness. It discusses the declining sex ratio in India, reasons for it like female infanticide and selective abortion, and efforts by the government like the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme to promote the education and empowerment of girls.

An Overseas Perspective: Ending Institutionalisation Globally
Martin Punaks’ presentation introduces the work that Lumos is doing to end the institutionalisation of children globally.
Martin explains that there are at least 8 million children in residential care worldwide. These children are isolated from the community, separated from parents or caregivers and their needs are secondary to the needs of the care organisation. They are also at risk of harm from psychological attachment disorders, impaired early brain development, early mortality, abuse, neglect, trafficking and modern slavery.
He then moves on to explain Lumos’ approach to deinstitutionalisation and finishes by presenting a case study on the charity’s work in Moldova where there has been almost a 90% reduction over 11 years in the number of children living in institutions.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is committed to providing development assistance that improves the lives of women, men, and children around the world. USAID has a special interest in the advancement of women worldwide. Women’s health, education, economic opportunity and human rights are at the core of successful, stable societies and economic growth.
One of the fundamental principles of the Department of State/USAID strategic plan is that “all citizens, men and women, are vital to meeting the critical challenges of today and reaching the goals of equality, peace and security.” USAID’s commitment to the full inclusion of women dates back to 1973, when the United States Congress passed the “Percy Amendment” to the Foreign Assistance Act, requiring that particular attention be given to integrating women into national economies to improve the status of women and to assist the overall development effort.
Today, USAID embraces this goal, and seeks to understand the different needs of men and women, to improve the efficiency and overall impact of its programs, and to ensure that both women and men have equitable access to development activities and their benefits. This document profiles USAID efforts to address barriers to full access to opportunity for women and men throughout the developing world. The success stories are a testament to the progress women and men have made. The selected examples illustrate the many efforts made by the USAID field missions, the Office of Women in Development, and other operating units in USAID to fully integrate women into development programs and policies throughout USAID. It is important to note that women’s leadership is not treated as a separate category in this report, but is reflected in all the examples.
Women are becoming political leaders, grassroots leaders, leaders in their professions, leaders in their communities, and heads of households, especially in regions ravaged by HIV/AIDS and conflict, and are growing into leaders in many other ways. An Overseas Perspective: Ending Institutionalisation Globally
Martin Punaks’ presentation introduces the work that Lumos is doing to end the institutionalisation of children globally.
Martin explains that there are at least 8 million children in residential care worldwide. These children are isolated from the community, separated from parents or caregivers and their needs are secondary to the needs of the care organisation. They are also at risk of harm from psychological attachment disorders, impaired early brain development, early mortality, abuse, neglect, trafficking and modern slavery.
He then moves on to explain Lumos’ approach to deinstitutionalisation and finishes by presenting a case study on the charity’s work in Moldova where there has been almost a 90% reduction over 11 years in the number of children living in institutions.

- 2. South Africa's Education Crisis - SA is among the worst- performing education systems in the world - Only 17.4% of the Western Cape's grade 6 students have grade-level numeracy skills and 48.6% have grade-level literacy skills

- 6. Challenging home environments provide little or no academic support Average monthly household income: 144 CAD 30% of the population is HIV positive 40% unemployed

- 8. Without the skills, knowledge and practices required, learners are unable to access tertiary education. Without educated young black citizens, South Africa cannot escape the inequalities engineered by apartheid. It is only through equal access to quality education that the promise of a transformed SA can truly be realised

- 10. Who we are and what we do By-youth, for-youth Established in 2003 Enable disadvantaged youth to pull themselves out of poverty and into university Peer-to-peer support for learners taking their futures into their own hands Over 50% of learners stay on as volunteers

- 23. Where to from here? Consolidation: IkamvaYouth-in-a-Box Sustainable funding Roll-out Target: To enable 855 learners to access tertiary by 2015 (half of the number in the entire Western Cape province in 2008)
