About Lloyd’s Register
Lloyd’s Register traces its origins to the coffee
house of Edward Lloyd, which, in the latter part
of the 17th century, had become a meeting
place for those with a professional interest in
ships, and the cargoes they carried. In 1760,
the Register Society was formed with the first
Register of Ships being published in 1764.

In 1834 the organisation was reconstituted as Lloyd’s
Register of British and Foreign Shipping and the first
Classification Rules were published. Today, the Lloyd’s
Register Group is an organisation that works to
enhance safety and to approve assets and systems at
sea, on land and in the air.
About Fairplay
Fairplay Publications Ltd. dates its origins from 1883
when it was founded by Thomas Hope Robinson.
Later acquired by John Prime from the Financial
Times, Fairplay has always been synonymous with
the shipping magazine ‘Fairplay International’
(now known as IHS Maritime Fairplay). However
Fairplay also developed a series of ship, company
and port databases to support its other maritime
publishing activities.

IHS and the IMO
IHS Maritime & Trade is the sole appointed
authority for assigning and validating the IMO
(International Maritime Organisation) Ship
and Company numbers. This gives a primary
position in the market place and the ability to
cover the very largest to the smallest ships,
down as far as 100 GT (gross tons). Merchant
seagoing propelled (not with a wooden hull)
ships cannot be put to sea without an IMO
number. The IMO numbering scheme became
a mandatory requirement under SOLAS as of
1st January, 1996.
Quality Assurance.
Our commitment to quality is reflected in our
ISO 9001:2008 certification. IHS Maritime
& Trade is ISO certified for the provision of
publishing and information services for the
shipping industry including the provision of
global online maritime asset tracking.
Name Clarification
There are a number of other organisations
using Lloyd’s as part of their company name
who are in no way linked to IHS Maritime &
Trade and who do NOT publish or maintain

The following organisations should not be
confused with IHS Maritime & Trade which is a
separate independent company:
• Corporation of Lloyd’s
• Lloyd’s Maritime Information Unit (LMIU)
• Germanischer Lloyd
• Turk Loydu
