2. Ignition Systems
Points and Condenser
Kettering system 1910 Cadillac
Chrysler Electronic Ignition
1972 340 c.i.
HEI Distributor
1974 GM
DIS Distributerless ignition system
~1990
Coil on plug
Direct Ignition type
All systems have a primary and secondary circuit
Primary wires TO the coil - Low voltage
Secondary are the wires AFTER the coil – Hi voltage
16. Ignition Timing
Adjusted by turning
distributor
Timing light is hooked
up to #1 spark plug
wire
Timing is checked at
crank shaft balancer
NOT ADJUSTABLE
on DIS or COP
systems
17. The Reason for “Ignition Timing”
As “Load” and
RPM change so
must timing
Low LOAD needs
more timing
High LOAD needs
less timing
Low RPM needs
less timing
High RPM needs
more timing
18. Advanced Timing
Will cause:
Hard starting (bite-back), starter damage
Engine “Ping”
Engine to run “Hot”
Increases HC emissions
Increases Nox emissions
19. Retarded Timing
Lowers HC
Poor gas mileage
Causes loss of power
Can make hard to start
Lowers engine vacuum
