Desktop applications still play an important role in web mapping. While web apps are popular, desktop apps allow for more powerful and complex GIS tasks by taking advantage of the processing power and storage available on desktop computers. Many web mapping services and APIs were first developed on desktops using applications like ArcGIS. Desktop GIS also serves as an important gateway to web mapping by allowing users to become familiar with GIS concepts and skills before applying them online. Therefore, the desktop should not be overlooked or dismissed as web and cloud-based mapping continue to evolve.
