Projects designed to provide work and introduce new technologies for consideration and adaptation in a mountain community in Southeastern Haiti (6eme seksyon, Leyogan)
Are you in? We're building bridges people to people, as well as solar energy tools. This collaborative project launches NOW and will be installed during August 1 - August 16, 2013. If you are in Haiti, join us (hiking boots suggested). If you will NOT be in Haiti, please (please?) send a small (small and numerous will do the job) donation to the link for our Cause, http://www.causes.com/causes/529435-if-pigs-could-fly-haiti
As recurring drought devastates their livestock, pastoral nomads in northern Kenya are learning new ways to make a living through small business training from The BOMA Project. The BOMA Project provides seed money, business skills training, and mentoring to groups of women to start small businesses like food shops and bead making. This helps the women generate income during drought when they have no other means of support, as the men must travel long distances in search of grazing land for the livestock. The small businesses also allow families to afford essential needs like food, medical care, and school supplies for their children.
RefillMyBottle provides a simple solution to the problem of use of single used plastic bottles.
We have created a network of RefillStations that are listed on an online map.
Anyone can use these RefillStations to refill their bottles as an alternative to buying water in single-use plastic bottles.
We are a community of responsible travellers, conscious
locals and mindful business owners who take action against
plastic waste.
Our goal is to reduce the number of single-use plastic
bottles used unnecessarily, starting in Indonesia.
Our mission is to:
- Register local businesses as RefillStations, providing water for free or minimum fee
- Convert travellers behavior from buying plastic bottles to refilling their bottles
- Raise awareness of solutions to the plastic problem
This document describes the challenges faced by urban scavengers in Shanghai who come from rural areas. It outlines their current situation, including reliance on recycling discarded items and random acts of kindness for food and temporary shelter. Common issues include lack of access to consistent food/water, hygiene problems, and untreated medical conditions from injuries sustained while scavenging. The proposal aims to address these challenges through a self-service trading machine that allows scavengers to deposit recycled goods in exchange for food/services, as well as increased collaboration with NGOs/churches to provide additional support.
The document proposes publishing a book about Hayes Valley Farm in San Francisco, which transformed an abandoned freeway off-ramp into an urban zero-waste farm powered by the local community. It provides an outline for the book chapters that would discuss the history and operation of the farm based on permaculture principles, its role in the community, and how similar farms can be created elsewhere. The authors seek to partner with Chronicle Books to publish and distribute the book to inspire more sustainable green initiatives.
The document describes the harsh living conditions in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. Over 300,000 people live in less than one square mile with no access to basic infrastructure and services. There is no sanitation system, resulting in widespread disease from open defecation and contamination of living areas with human waste. Residents also lack access to clean water, electricity, and other necessities. The lack of infrastructure has created a dangerous environment where people are constantly exposed to pathogens. Disease is rampant, and infant mortality is high due to the squalid conditions.
Let Us Compost has been providing curbside composting services in Athens, Georgia since 2012. They collect food scraps and other compostable materials from residential and commercial customers, and partner with a local composting facility to process the materials. Let Us Compost generates revenue through subscription services, compost sales, and zero-waste event services. The business has grown steadily since starting and has goals to continue expanding its customer base and composting volumes over the next few years.

The document discusses various types and amounts of food, industrial, municipal, medical, and electronic waste produced in the United States each year. It notes that in the US, approximately 96 billion pounds of food is wasted annually, while industrial waste amounts to over 7 billion tons per year. For municipal solid waste, over 250 million tons are generated annually, with food scraps, packaging, and other products making up the majority. The document also outlines various methods for dealing with different forms of waste, such as landfilling, incineration, and recycling, along with their environmental impacts.
Nightclubs and restaurants in downtown Indianapolis are throwing away large amounts of recyclable materials like aluminum daily. A community action plan proposes a three-phase approach to increase recycling in these businesses. Phase one involves educating the public on recycling at local malls. Phase two partners with government agencies to make recycling more affordable and accessible. Phase three lobbies traditional waste companies to shift more towards recycling by 2025. The plan suggests making recycling bins noticeable, using symbols to label materials, and offering patrons discounts or rewards to motivate increased recycling.

The document discusses starting a campaign to reduce littering called "Healthy Mind, Healthy World". Littering is a major problem that pollutes communities and harms wildlife. If the author had resources, they would create an effective campaign to change attitudes towards littering. The campaign would educate people in schools and offices about the problems of littering and encourage sustainable habits like using reusable items instead of single-use plastics. It would make reducing litter easy and enjoyable in order to change norms and behaviors for a healthier environment.
This document discusses solid waste management in India. It begins by quoting Pope Francis and the Prime Minister of India on the importance of caring for the environment. It then notes that India generates much more solid waste now than in 1947 due to increasing urbanization and consumerism. Most waste remains uncollected and is dumped in unsanitary landfills, polluting the environment. The document advocates for segregating waste at the source into wet and dry categories. It explains the benefits of this practice, such as reducing waste and producing compost. It provides resources for housing societies to implement zero waste programs and encourages citizens to work towards cleaner communities.

The document summarizes two symposia held in New Zealand in August 2014 about the effects of alcohol and marijuana on the adolescent brain. Experts from universities in New Zealand and the US presented research showing that substance use during adolescence can have long-lasting negative impacts on brain development. The research found that both alcohol and marijuana use were linked to poorer cognitive performance and mental health issues. Specifically, alcohol use was shown to correlate with differences in brain function before and after drinking began in teens. Females also appeared more vulnerable than males. Marijuana use was associated with increased risks of dropping out of school and mental health problems. Both sessions emphasized that substance use has greater detrimental effects during adolescence compared to adulthood.
Meiosis is a type of cell division that produces gametes, such as sperm or egg cells, with half the number of chromosomes as normal body cells. During meiosis, DNA is replicated and the pairs of homologous chromosomes are separated and distributed randomly into four daughter cells. This process ensures genetic material is mixed from both parents when fertilization occurs during sexual reproduction.

In rural Haiti, we work collaboratively and with humility to preserve the dignity of our neighbors. The newsletter describes various dimensions of our learning. Most notably, this past year was the collaborative implementation of solar powered pumps to bring water closer to a mountain community.
The biggest roadblock to the successful realization and deployment of humanitarian technologies is: Not involving at every level the local experts and end-users; not studying and appreciating the locally-available technologies and skills, and not knowing the terrain - the map is not the territory. Our small team was fortunate to have enthusiastic learners, Haitians and visitors, willing to take risks and test out ideas. For our organization, "If Pigs Could Fly -Helping Hillside Haiti," the principal goal is the shared learning. Not to discount the material benefits to the community, it is the learning that will endure.
Long after the PVC has crumbled, the solar panels need repair, and the steel gives way, it will be this shared learning, the experience, the participation in construction, that will endure.
The newsletter summarizes our various efforts to learn and share in Haiti.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Cosa hanno in comune un mattoncino Lego e la backdoor XZ?Speck&Tech
ABSTRACT: A prima vista, un mattoncino Lego e la backdoor XZ potrebbero avere in comune il fatto di essere entrambi blocchi di costruzione, o dipendenze di progetti creativi e software. La realtà è che un mattoncino Lego e il caso della backdoor XZ hanno molto di più di tutto ciò in comune.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

1. Mon Bouton in November 2013
Dear Supporters:
Our small nonprofit, founded by Dr. Randy Mont-Reynaud, has been working
in the Zoranje zone in south-eastern Haiti for 13 years with our partner
community, Mon Bouton. This summer, together with the local community
organizer, Toma Abraham, she and engineer Rose Ashford implemented a solar
powered system for pumping water designed by Dr.Eric Sabelman.
If Pigs Could Fly — Haiti
Here’s news for you of the project to which so many have contributed, the solar
water pump: In August, with the needed equipment already in place, Rose
Ashford, a former NASA engineer, hiked up with
Randy and supervised the installation of the solar
water pump for two weeks. By the end of their
visit, it began to pump water up the mountain!
A major goal of IPCF-H is human development,
a two-way street between Haitians and American
visitors. We are happy to report its development
this past summer. Rose found the Haitians
incredibly hard-working, and great problemsolvers. Part of your donations supported wages
for thirty local workers, bringing much needed
cash into the community and more expertise.

It is quite an effort to install the
technology in this rugged country!
A rockfall hindered completion, so
the community itself is pledged to
finish the rest with its new knowhow. Toma’s innovative and Haitianborn idea about this will make the

keep the solar panels and pumps in a
safer area. In the end, water will be
easily accessible to an even wider community, as the final tank will be near the
footpath crossroads to mountain markets and the city.
As for Rose Ashford, the engineer, she
said “I wouldn’t have missed this for
anything in the world!” She detailed
how much it meant to to her to live
with the family, and share the days,
nights, workload, music and laughter.
She was very impressed with how
quickly they understood what to do.
The 30 Haitians she worked with now

2. IPCF-H supports small scale peanut butter production
(“mamba”)—accomplished with a meat grinder. We
bought a new one this year. This effort provides paid
work for women as well as the daily snacks for 170 school
children.
IPCF-H sent funds after Hurricane Sandy washed
away fields, homes and the harvest. We collaborated
to bring a Haitian NGO, Zafen, to the zone. Zafen
accordingly funded plantings of beans and peanuts to help
compensate for the lost harvest. To be able to buy locally
grown peanuts for our “mamba” project is a real win-win
for Zoranje.

Also up the mountain are our five treadle sewing
machines and a cadre of willing women to make things
to sell. One young woman, Kloteed, got herself into a
state-run certificate program. She took one machine to
Darbonne to be close to the school, and will complete
her course of studies next year.
The vision and energy of Randy, our founder, and
Toma Abraham, our Haitian CEO (Chief Eternal

support training and work for both men and women. The water project will free many
hands. Without you and your donations to If Pigs Could Fly–Haiti, none of this would
have been possible. We hope you will continue your support.
